The Prefect finishes securing the ledgers, placing each volume in its allotted section. He keeps the pamphlet separate on the table and watches Paul beside the shelves.

Remain here, Foot. I shall summon the master and present the pamphlet with your exact statement, neither more nor less.

He steps into the Study corridor and calls softly. After a short interval, the master, an adult man of medium build with brown hair, ruddy skin, and a broad, clean-shaven face, arrives, and the Prefect leads him to the table while Paul remains under observation.

This pamphlet was found inside a school volume. Foot has admitted, in precise terms, that he placed it there deliberately.

Deliberately placed, yes. But is this merely a matter for Chenevix-Trench, as a conduct offence, or does its argument require a broader school inquiry?

The master turns the pamphlet without touching its printed argument for long. The Prefect keeps his ledger open beside the books, preserving the admission as a separate record while the question hangs over Paul.
