The manor courtyard goes still. Laborer One folds to his knees before Lord Valehart, blood on his sleeve, breath ragged, while Lady Seraphine steps in close, lantern light shaking over his face.

Laborer One
It was no prison, my lord. It was a seal. The lower chamber, broken now... something was kept down there.
A long, buried silence answers him from beneath the stones. The servants at the archway freeze, and even the hounds in the yard draw back their ears.

Lady Seraphine Valehart
Say clearly what you saw, and where. Every word.
From the shadow of the inner stair, a hooded figure comes forward with both hands raised. Mud clings to her hem, and an old mill token hangs at her throat.

The Hooded Courier
Do not let him stand there gawking. I came from the west road with warning, the kind bought with fear. The thing below the manor is waking, and it knows the house above it.

Lord Valehart
Who are you, and why should I trust this warning?

The Hooded Courier
Because I have already lost two routes and one camp to your enemies. If Sava Nightshade is here, then she must hear this now. The seal below was never meant to hold a monster. It was meant to hold a name.

Learn the name held beneath the seal
“I walked towards the hooded courier with my four best wolves behind "you called for me courier?" I told the wolves to standby”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)
Sava crosses the stones toward the hooded courier, wolves padding close behind her in a tight, watchful line. The courtyard hush holds, lanternlight trembling across wet flagstones as the hooded woman keeps both hands raised.

Sava Nightshade
You called for me, courier?

Sava Nightshade
Stand by.
The four wolves fan out and settle at Sava’s signal, ears forward, bodies low but still. Lord Valehart and Lady Seraphine remain fixed on the newcomer, while the laborer on one knee swallows hard and does not rise.

The Hooded Courier
Good. Then listen fast. The seal below was not a prison mark, it was a lock on a name, and that name is waking with the water behind the wall.

Lady Seraphine Valehart
A name?

The Hooded Courier
Beneath this house, beneath the mill, beneath every route they drew, something was fed and hidden. If it speaks, the forest roads change.
“I ask what lies beneath the manor wall "what's under the Valeharts manor" I listen to the courier for the information”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

Sava’s question hangs in the wet air. The courier’s shoulders drop a fraction, and she turns her head toward the manor wall as if listening through stone.

The Hooded Courier
Under the wall is water, caged in old stone. Beneath that water is a chamber, and beneath the chamber is the name. House Valehart did not build the seal to keep a beast down. It built it to keep the name from being spoken.

Lady Seraphine Valehart
A hidden name, inside our own house...
The courier nods once, then adds the last piece like a warning blade laid flat on the stones.

The Hooded Courier
When the water behind the wall starts moving, the roadward locks fail. If you mean to stop it, you choose now, the manor depths, or the mill before whatever wakes below reaches the routes.
The ring of wolves tightens around Sava as the courtyard goes still again, every face turned to her for the next command.

New Gift: Ancient Tongue Whisperer
“I head for the manor depths with my wolves at my flanks. "Let's go my wolves let's solve this mystery" I had one of the wolves stayed with Lady and Lord Valehart”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Sava Nightshade
Then we go now. One of you stays with the Valeharts, the rest with me.
Sava turns on her heel and starts toward the manor’s lower stair, wolves flowing after her in a tight, silent wedge. One wolf lingers back, ears up, settling near Lord Valehart and Lady Seraphine as their wary lookout.

The Hooded Courier
If the water is already moving, do not waste time in the halls. The depths are below the old stone, not the public rooms.
The courier steps aside, giving Sava the line to the stair. The house banner snaps once overhead, and the courtyard opens beneath them like a map of paths, walls, and dark entries.

Lady Seraphine Valehart
I will hold here. Go, and bring back whatever truth is waking under my house.
Lord Valehart answers with a sharp nod, already watching the remaining wolf as if measuring a promise. Sava reaches the first step down, the pack close enough to shadow her boots.
Behind her, the courtyard stays tense but still. Ahead, the stairwell swallows the light, and the route below waits for Sava’s next choice.
“I descend into the manor depths as I stare and nodded to the Valeharts "we'll be back" me and my three wolves headed into depths”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Sava dips under the stair arch with three wolves at her heels, her nod back to the courtyard brief and hard. Above, the nobles stay as a dark knot of watchfulness while the last wolf keeps their flank.
The stair narrows fast, old stone swallowing lantern glow. Water murmurs somewhere below, not loud, but present enough to make the walls feel lived in.

The Hooded Courier
Left at the first landing. The deep route bends under the west wing, and the sound comes from beyond that wall.
The courier slips ahead and points Sava into the shadowed turn. The wolves lower their heads and follow, shoulder to shoulder in the tight space.

Sava Nightshade
We come back.
Her promise hangs behind her as the stair corkscrews down. The courtyard vanishes overhead, and the corridor below opens into colder dark.
At the bottom, the passage splits, one way toward deeper stone, the other toward a damp draft that smells faintly of river air. The water behind the wall is louder here.
“Me and my wolves fellow the courier to the mysterious threat”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Sava follows the courier without hesitation, and the three wolves flow after her in a tight, silent wedge. Their paws sound soft on the old stone, but the manor answers with a low, hollow hush from beneath the floor.
The Hooded Courier cuts along the left-hand branch, then stops at a seam in the wall where damp air leaks through black mortar. The hidden way is already open, a narrow service cut descending beside the flooded stonework.
Sava slips into the passage with the pack close enough to touch, and the corridor opens under them into a steep, cramped stair. Water mutters behind the sealed stones to their right, louder now, as if something below has shifted its weight.
The courier glances back once, grave and urgent, then points lower. The floor plan of the manor seems to tilt around them, with the route to the mill running off one side and the deeper stone dropping away ahead.
A small wet sound echoes up from below, then stops. It is not loud, but it changes the air, and the wolves tense in unison, ears forward and bodies braced.

The Hooded Courier
There. Hear that? If it slips again, we choose now. Deeper, or back to the mill.
The corridor holds on that question, the hidden water breathing behind the wall while Sava and the pack stand at the fork with the threat finally given shape.
“"We'll go deeper " I told the courier "let's continue"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Sava Nightshade
We go deeper. Keep moving.
The courier nods once and drops ahead into the narrow way, taking the lead as the decision hardens into motion. Sava follows into the deeper stair, and the wolves press in close behind her, shoulder to flank, leaving the millward branch behind.
Cold water-light gathers on the walls as the passage opens a little, then narrows again around old stone and slick runoff. The hidden route below answers with a low, steadier hush, not silence, but something contained.

The Hooded Courier
Good. Stay tight. If the sound shifts again, we do not stop for pride.
The stair levels out onto a lower landing, and the fork drops out of sight behind them. Ahead, the flooded stonework breathes through its seams, and the smell of wet earth grows stronger than the manor’s dust.

A Wolf
The air is wrong below, but the path is open.
The courier lifts a hand toward the dark and starts forward again, while somewhere deeper in the manor, water gives one soft, dragging pulse against sealed stone.
“I listen for the water behind the wall”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

Sava falls silent and listens. The wet hush below is not a rush or drip now, but a slow, deliberate breathing through stone, as if the wall itself is being filled and emptied by something patient.
The sound slips into shape for her, two channels of water moving at different depths, one near enough to press at the seams, one lower and older, dragging through a buried chamber.

Sava Nightshade
There is a hollow behind the wall, and something moving in it.

A Wolf
The pack stiffens at the change, ears forward, bodies angled toward the dark fork behind them.

The Hooded Courier
You hear it too. Good. It means the seal is awake, not broken yet.
The courier slows at the landing and looks back, face tight under the hood. The manor’s lower stone gives one heavy, waterlogged thump, and the faint seam to the side beads with fresh dark moisture.

The Hooded Courier
Choose fast, Sava. Follow the sound down, or turn back while the mill still has time.
✓ Quest Accepted
Contain the failing seal
“Is the seal still holding?”
NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 71)
The stone seam groans, and a hairline fracture spiderwebs outward from the moisture, spilling a thin, dark trickle of water onto the floor. The seal is failing, and the pressure behind the wall is no longer contained.
− Scene Quest Removed
Reach the manor depths and stop whatever wakes below
“I signal the wolf beside me to hold the line at the fracture while help them”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Sava snaps a signal toward the wolf at her side, and the beast plants itself at the fracture. The courier shifts with her, both of them bracing the narrow stair against the pulse in the stone.
The floor jerks under a deeper thump. Water surges through the crack in a quick, dark sheet, then breaks against the wolf's paws and scatters toward the passage fork.

The Hooded Courier
Hold here, then we stop the spread. If this seam widens, the lower route goes with it.

Sava Nightshade
The water is climbing the wrong way, toward the stair.
Sava drops in beside the fracture, driving the bow low as a brace while one hand reaches into the slick seam. The wolf stays planted, shoulders squared against the wall's shiver.
For a breath, the trickle narrows. The wet stone answers with one last hollow knock, then settles into a strained, watchful silence.

The Hooded Courier
It is holding for the moment. But whatever is below has noticed us.
“I ask the courier to inspect the seal "is the seal ok?" As try held the wall back with my bow”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +2)

Sava keeps the bow braced while the courier leans in and peels one wet hand along the seam. The wolf holds the wall in place, paws spread on the slick stone.

The Hooded Courier
The seal is still standing. The stone is cracked, but the lock has not given way.
The courier’s other hand hovers over the dark line of water, then taps the wall once, listening. A low, submerged thump answers from below.

The Hooded Courier
Hear that? It is not breaking through. It is testing us.

Sava Nightshade
Is the seal all right?

The Hooded Courier
For the moment, yes. But it knows where we are now.
The wolf shifts its weight and the leak thins to a narrow thread. Water still beads along the fracture, but the stair floor stops spreading.
“I brace the crack with my bow again as me and my wolves pressed against the wall to prevent the seal break”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Strength, rolled -1)
Sava drives the bow harder into the seam, and the wolves answer by pressing in with her. The crack holds. Water hisses down to a thin, trapped thread instead of flooding the stair.

The Hooded Courier
Good. Keep it pinned like that.
The courier braces both palms against the stone above the split, shoulders shaking with the strain. The wall gives a wet groan, but it does not open.

A Wolf
Low... steady... hold.
The dark water retreats to a trembling line along the fracture. For a breath, the stairwell goes almost silent, as if the manor is listening back.

The Hooded Courier
That silence is wrong. Either the seal is settling, or something below has stopped pushing.
The courier looks down the stairs, then back to Sava and the wolves, waiting for her to choose whether the next step goes deeper or back toward the mill.
“I keep bracing the crack with my bow”
Sava keeps the bow wedged in place, and the crack stops breathing for now. Above, the wall gives one last shiver, then settles into a hard, wet stillness.

The Hooded Courier
The seal has taken the pressure. Either we go deeper now, or we run before it changes its mind.
“I push deeper into the manor "we keep going deeper"”
FAILURE (Mediocre Strength, rolled -2)

Sava drives her weight off the braced bow and steps toward the deeper stair, but the landing answers with a wet groan. The hidden passage below shudders, and the stone seam beside her gives just enough to remind her it is still alive.

Sava Nightshade
The crack is shifting under the wall, not just in it.

The Hooded Courier
Careful. If you force that way, the whole stair can shear. There is another route, but it is not kind.
The wolf pulls back a half-step, claws skidding on damp stone, while dark water threads farther along the floor. The courier points low, toward a narrow service slit half-hidden behind the landing stones.

The Hooded Courier
A crawlspace. Old maintenance, old shame. It reaches under the west wing before the main weight of the house does.
The seam stops straining long enough for the wall to hold, but the stairwell is changed now, the deeper passage no longer a straight descent, only a risk. The choice narrows to the slit in the stone or the failing stairs behind them.
“I push deeper into the manor "we keep going deeper"”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Strength, rolled +1)
Sava commits and drops into the crawlspace first, bow angled low so the limbs do not catch the stone. The opening swallows her shoulders, and the stairwell above falls away into a damp, narrow throat.
The passage beyond is cramped enough to force her to move in short, careful pushes. Old mortar flakes under her palm, and cold water slicks the floor beneath the lintel.
Ahead, the crawlspace bends under the west wing just as the courier promised. The air changes there, carrying a deeper draft and the faintest pulse of water from within the house.

The Hooded Courier
Keep your head down. This run was meant for servants, not hunters.
Sava pushes through the bend and the narrow passage opens into a rough, hidden chamber of stacked stone and old beams. The route is no longer a slit in the wall, it is a usable way forward.

The Hooded Courier
There. If the lower halls are waking, this is the safer line.
From deeper below, the water answers with a single heavy thud against stone. The sound is muffled now, but it is close enough to make the next choice immediate.
