The confrontation pauses inside a roofless shrine beyond Brackenford’s eastern fields. Weathered royal prayers cover the walls, but wind and snow stop before the small central altar.

Kesh binds Andras’s forearm with a clean strip of linen, keeping the golden sword within reach. Commander Serah Vale stands watch at the entrance, one hand near her sword.

Commander Serah Vale

Commander Serah Vale

The scarred leader and his messenger remain outside under guard. They will not reach Brackenford while we determine whose order they followed.

Kesh

Kesh

Mara and Tavin stayed with the villagers. They know the fields, the stores, and the road better than any officer arriving beneath a borrowed seal.

Commander Serah Vale

Commander Serah Vale

Brackenford matters because these eastern roads carry grain toward the crown’s border forts. Whoever controls its stores can starve the garrisons, or profit by claiming protection.

Commander Serah Vale

Commander Serah Vale

The false order was not random. It tested whether Lord Veyr’s writ could be displaced without royal challenge. That makes the village a hinge between local authority and the crown.

Commander Serah Vale

Commander Serah Vale

You came to help before any of us understood the danger. Tell me, Andras, what protection do you believe Brackenford truly needs?

I’m fine, Kesh. Just an old wound.

Andras rises from the altar step with a fond smile toward Kesh. The linen pulls tight across his forearm, and fresh blood seeps through the binding.

Kesh

Kesh

Old wounds still open when they are asked to carry new burdens. Sit if it worsens.

Andras

Andras

I worry Brackenford may not have been the target. If the border fort starves, there would be nothing protecting the eastern border.

The words settle beneath the shrine’s broken roof. Outside, a guard, a young adult woman with a compact build, brown skin, and a hooded gray cloak shifts near the doorway, and snow slides from a cracked royal carving.

Commander Serah Vale

Commander Serah Vale

You are right. Brackenford is the means, not the prize. If its grain disappears, the forts lose their shield, and the eastern border lies exposed.

Kesh

Kesh

Then we protect the stores first, and learn who expected the crown to notice too late. Andras’s wound can wait until the village is secure.

You think whoever is behind this would attack the stores? You know this town. Lead the way.

Kesh

Kesh

Yes. The false order draws attention to the road, while an accomplice can reach the grain cellar unseen. Stay close.

Kesh takes the golden sword, and its warmth returns beneath his palm. He leads Andras through the shrine’s rear arch toward Brackenford, keeping to the snow-shadowed ditch.

They reach the village meeting house by a narrow side lane. The cellar doors stand shut beneath the storehouse, but fresh boot marks cross the snow toward them.

Kesh

Kesh

There. Those tracks were not here when we left. Someone is at the stores, or has just finished there.

Kesh moves quickly, scraping one shoulder against the meeting house wall. The impact tears his already bruised arm, and a dark stain spreads beneath his sleeve.

Mara

Mara

Kesh! The cellar latch was barred when I checked it. If someone opened it now, they are inside with the grain.

Andras and Kesh descend through the cellar doors. Lamplight reveals a dark elf, an adult woman with slate-gray skin, white hair hidden beneath a black mask, and black leather armor hunched over the grain sacks.

Kesh

Kesh

Do not move. Your hands are visible, and the village remains unharmed.

The dark elf freezes with one gloved hand inside an opened sack. Beside her rests a small wax-sealed packet, while untouched grain fills the surrounding bins.

The Dark Elf

The Dark Elf

You entered sooner than expected. That is inconvenient, but no villager has been harmed. I came to mark which stores would be taken.

Kesh steps between her and the stair, golden sword lowered but awake. Behind the elf, fresh chalk marks form a tally of grain stores and eastern roads.

Kesh

Kesh

Then you have given us more than a trespasser would. Who receives the tally, and who ordered the false royal seal?

The wax packet bears a black crescent pressed over a crown impression. Its seal is unbroken, giving Andras and Kesh a tangible lead before any grain is removed.

“"So you forged the seal. you seek to steal the supplies. Why"”

So you forged the seal. You seek to steal the supplies. Why?

The dark elf slowly withdraws her hand from the grain sack. Her masked face turns toward the wax-sealed packet, then toward the chalk tally of roads and stores.

The Dark Elf

The Dark Elf

I forged the seal to make Brackenford appear responsible. The supplies are meant to disappear east, into the hands of a shadowy organization.

The Dark Elf

The Dark Elf

They will blame the village for the missing grain, then claim the eastern border is failing because its people are disloyal or corrupt.

She taps the black crescent on the packet without breaking its seal. The untouched sacks and careful chalk marks support her account, though her purpose remains dangerous.

The Dark Elf

The Dark Elf

The organization wants the border forts weakened. Once their stores run short, fear will open the roads more effectively than any army.

Kesh

Kesh

Then Brackenford is being framed, and the eastern garrisons are the true target. We need the packet, the tally, and the route east.

“*you look uneasy she gave that away too easy. suddenly you notice her mumbling something just as a flame spell is cast into the grain as the cellar door is barred behind you by someone unknown.*”

The dark elf’s explanation comes too smoothly. As Andras studies her, he notices her lips moving beneath the mask, forming a quiet, measured incantation.

A spark gathers in her gloved hand and leaps as a flame spell into the nearest grain sack. Fire crawls across the dry cloth, bright against the cellar’s shadows.

Kesh

Kesh

Fire! The stores first, then the evidence. Move!

The cellar door slams above them. A heavy bar drops into place from outside, sealing the stairway while smoke begins to coil beneath the low ceiling.

The Dark Elf

The Dark Elf

Now you understand. The village will find ash, a black crescent, and two convenient witnesses trapped beside it.

Kesh tightens his grip on the golden sword. Its divided warmth flares toward the burning sack and the sealed stair, illuminating the packet beside the grain.

Kesh

Kesh

She wanted us inside when the fire began. Andras, secure the packet. I will break the bar or smother the flame.

The dark elf whips a short blade toward Kesh while his attention remains on the burning grain. Andras rushes across the cellar, placing himself between them.

Andras catches her stroke on his own blade and drives it wide. The impact forces her back from Kesh, while the golden sword flares against the spreading fire.

Kesh

Kesh

Andras, the flame is feeding on the sacks! Keep her away from me, and I will break that bar.

The dark elf slashes again, but Andras turns the attack aside and knocks her weapon from her hand. It skids beneath a grain shelf, leaving her disarmed.

His sweeping counter also strikes the cellar’s old support latch. A concealed side door springs open behind the shelf, revealing a narrow passage and clear air beyond.

You choose the soldier over the evidence? Then you have made yourself part of the story they will bury.

The packet remains beside the grain, untouched but within reach. Kesh seizes the golden sword in both hands and charges the barred stairs as smoke thickens overhead.

You mistake a narrow escape for captivity.

She twists with trained precision, driving her shoulder into the doorframe. Andras’s grip slips, and his momentum carries both of them through the opening without the clean throw he intended.

The dark elf lands beyond the threshold and rolls behind a jutting stone buttress. The passage bends sharply there, putting solid cover between her and the cellar.

Andras ends up on one knee at the passage mouth, while the packet remains visible beside the nearest grain sack. Beyond the bend, faint blue sigils mark a second exit.

The sigils are a route marker. She has shown us where the passage leads, but the packet is still within reach.

Kesh

Kesh

You chose the living over the evidence. Good. Hold the blade steady while I break this bar.

Andras catches the golden sword with Kesh, their joined grip flaring against the smoke. Behind them, the dark elf’s spell snaps into the stone wall, scorching the passage.

Kesh wrenches the bar free. The effort tears his bruised arm open again, but the stairway stands clear while the abandoned packet remains behind in the burning cellar.
