Brackenford lies beneath dark pine trees and a thin fall of snow. Frost seals the fields, and the villagers huddle beside empty grain sacks near the gate.

Mara
The writ gives you passage, but our stores are nearly gone. We have seen no lasting protection since the last patrol left.
Kesh stands beside Andras with both hands on the golden oath-blade. Its warmth fades, then turns toward the eastern road as hoofbeats stumble through the snow.
Tavin Rusk, a mud-streaked boy with wind-reddened cheeks and a torn gray coat, staggers from between the pines. One hand grips a broken royal seal.

Tavin Rusk
They marked Brackenford as protected property! Armed men on the eastern road said anyone entering would answer to the crown.
Mara, a weathered middle-aged woman with braided black hair, a fur-lined brown cloak, and a scar across one eyebrow, takes the broken seal without touching its jagged edge.

Mara
This bears royal authority. But I know no soldiers stationed nearby, and no crown officer warned us they were coming.

“"I don't know who these so called royal soldiers are but we are here to help are we not Kesh?"”
FAILURE (Good Persuasion, rolled -2)

Andras
I do not know who these so-called royal soldiers are, but we are here to help, are we not, Kesh?

Kesh
We are. But help cannot begin with trusting a broken seal. If those men use the crown’s name falsely, charging east could serve them better than Brackenford.
The golden oath-blade cools beneath their joined hands, then gives a faint pull toward the broken seal instead of the eastern road. Kesh studies the mark without touching it.

Mara
Then begin here. The seal may be false, altered, or stolen. Our reeve keeps the old royal registry in the meeting house.

Tavin Rusk
The soldiers carried red shields, but no crown officer rode with them. They asked about the grain cellar and the road beyond it.
Kesh’s ears angle toward the meeting house. The immediate promise to help has not settled the villagers’ fear, but the seal and the soldiers’ questions offer a concrete trail before any confrontation.

Keep Brackenford free from the claimed royal authority
“"It would be better to confront them outside the village so as to not include the villagers if there is a fight"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +2)

Andras turns from the meeting house and leads Kesh east along the road, drawing the oath-blade’s golden glow away from Brackenford’s gate and gathered villagers.

Kesh
Stay here, Mara. If steel comes out, it will meet us beyond the fields, not your people.
Mara gathers the villagers behind the gate. Andras and Kesh continue through falling snow until Brackenford’s roofs vanish behind a low rise.
Three armed men wait beside a frozen milestone: adult men in mismatched red shields, quilted coats, and iron caps. Their leader is broad-shouldered, with a black beard and a scarred cheek.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
Halt there. This road and the village beyond it stand under royal protection. State your authority.
Kesh stops beside Andras, keeping the golden sword between their joined hands. The blade’s warmth steadies, its point angled toward the broken seal carried behind them.

Kesh
We are Brackenford’s appointed investigators. We came out here so your claim can be answered without placing villagers between armed men.
“"On who's orders do you demand resources from the people of Brackenford" *you demand*”
FAILURE (Poor Intimidation, rolled -2)

Andras
On whose orders do you demand resources from the people of Brackenford?
The scarred shield-leader’s black beard glistens with melting snow. Behind him, the other two men shift their spears, watching the joined golden blade rather than answering at once.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
By royal authority. The order is sealed, and your questions do not outrank it.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
You have no crown commission I recognize. Surrender Brackenford’s writ, and I may let you return without making this a seizure.
He produces a folded parchment but keeps it beneath his cloak, showing only a red wax edge. The oath-blade pulls toward it, then cools sharply, refusing the offered proof.

Kesh
That is not an answer, and the blade knows it. He is trying to make our authority the issue instead of naming the commander.
The leader’s refusal leaves the demand unanswered and places Lord Veyr’s writ at risk. The three men now bar the road, while the hidden order remains unverified.
“"we currently serve under lord Veyr who serves the crown. thus our authority is that of the crown now hand over the writ to my friend."”
FAILURE (Good Persuasion, rolled +0)

Andras
We currently serve under Lord Veyr, who serves the crown. Our authority is the crown’s authority. Hand the writ to my friend.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
You may speak for Veyr, dragonborn, but you do not command me. The writ stays with its lawful bearer, and Kesh is no such bearer.
The leader draws the parchment farther from his cloak but does not surrender it. Its red wax bears a crown mark over a second, partly scraped seal, and the oath-blade chills beneath their joined hands.

Kesh
There. The seal was altered, or someone tried to hide what stood beneath it. That is why he refuses to name the commander.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
Do not mistake damaged wax for proof. You will leave Brackenford’s writ here, or this road becomes a seizure.
His demand hardens the standoff, but the exposed parchment gives them a usable trail: the concealed lower seal may identify who issued the order.

Kesh
The writ cannot be won by repeating the claim. We need the hidden seal read, and his authority tested against it.
“*your hand falls from the golden blade. letting Kesh hold it hoping your desire for the cat to wield it is enough as you grip the hilt of your own blade.* "If you truly serve the crown then you won't mind getting your commander to meet with us" *you say knowing that any fake soldier could not follow through on that request.*”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +0)

Andras releases the golden hilt. Kesh catches its weight alone as Andras draws his own blade, the oath-light thinning but refusing to vanish.

Andras
If you truly serve the crown, then you will not mind getting your commander to meet with us.
The movement raises the shield-leader’s suspicion. He gestures sharply, and one red-shielded man, a lean young adult man with a weathered face, light-brown skin, cropped dark hair, and a quilted brown coat beneath an iron cap, rides toward the eastern ridge while the leader keeps his parchment close.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
You will have your meeting. But until my commander arrives, that blade stays lowered and Brackenford’s writ remains untouched.
Kesh holds the golden sword alone. Its warmth falters against his palm, then steadies, while Andras’s reopened forearm begins bleeding through its binding.
A short while later, a stern middle-aged woman in a red cloak approaches with the messenger. Her iron-gray hair is braided tight, and a crown-shaped scar marks her chin.

The Crown Commander
I am Commander Serah Vale. I ordered no seizure of Brackenford’s grain. Show me the writ, soldier, and explain that altered seal.
“*you look to the soldier. now looking a little nervous.*”

Andras turns his gaze toward the soldier, his drawn blade held low. The nervous shift does not escape the commander, nor the scarred leader guarding the folded parchment.

The Scarred Shield-Leader
You heard her, soldier. Explain the seal and produce the writ.
The soldier’s grip tightens around his reins. He glances from Commander Vale to the altered parchment, then slowly dismounts beside the frozen milestone.

Red-Shielded Messenger
Commander, we were told the lower seal proved the order came from the crown. The leader said Brackenford’s stores were to be secured.

Commander Serah Vale
I gave no such order. Hand me the parchment, and do not touch Brackenford’s writ.
The scarred leader hesitates. Snow gathers on his iron cap while the exposed red wax catches the pale light, making the scraped lower seal impossible to ignore.

Commander Serah Vale
Dragonborn, keep your blade lowered. Your caution has preserved a peaceful hearing, and I will see this matter examined properly.
