The badge on his lapel is plain, no pin.

He flicks his eyes to the evidence case, then to the dead radio hanging at his belt. His thumb hovers over the transmit button, but he does not press it.

A distant alarm pulses down the stairwell. The man swallows, lowers the tablet a fraction, and shifts sideways, half blocking the hatch but not committing to it.

He staggers into the doorway frame, one hand slamming the wall, the other still near the dead radio he never gets to use.

The second alarm pulse washes over him as his knees buckle, and he sinks out of the doorway.

The maintenance hatch stays open behind him, dark and inviting, while the stairwell above continues to throb with distant warning tones.
