Luna leads Mara, Edrin, and Sella into the grand dining hall. The hearth burns steady and bright, its golden light washing over the long oak table and the platters of roasted herbs and fresh bread.
She invites them to sit and dine. Chairs scrape softly as the three travelers ease down, still cautious, still grateful, as if afraid the warmth might vanish if they breathe too hard.

Mara
I did not think I would ever smell bread again tonight.

Edrin
Nor did I think we would see a table set this kindly. Thank you, Luna.

Sella
The hall feels safer than the tower below, but only by a little.
Mara breaks a piece of bread, then pauses with it in hand, glancing to Luna before taking the first bite. The others follow her lead, their shoulders loosening by degrees.

Mara
The door found me first, I think... or hid me. I still cannot tell which is worse.
For a moment, the only sounds are the hearth, the bread being torn apart, and the quiet settling of fear into something gentler. The hall holds them all in warm silence.
“I sit at the head of the table and ask Mara to explain what she saw in the dark.”
FAILURE (Great Diplomacy, rolled -3)

Luna settles into the head chair, and the table answers with a soft creak. The warm hush of the hall tightens around the four of them.

Luna the Dragon Goddess
Mara, tell me what you saw in the dark.

Mara
Her fingers pause over the bread. The question lands like a lantern turned toward a hidden corner.

Mara
I saw a passage that was not there before, and a door that seemed to wait for me to notice it.

Edrin
Not there before? You mean the tower changed around you?

Mara
I mean I could feel it deciding. Like it had been looking for someone to be alone.

Sella
That is a grim way to describe a home.
Mara lowers her eyes, then lifts the bread again with careful hands. Even the fire seems to listen.
✓ Quest Accepted
Protect the travelers
“That should be impossible. This tower is under my absolute control.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Luna lets the hall answer her words. The nearest beams give a low, settling groan, and the long table sits still under her measure.
The fire in the hearth brightens, not wild, just steady. Its warmth spreads across the bowls and cups, as if the room itself is drawing a safer breath.

Mara
Then it does feel like a place, not a trap.

Edrin
A place with opinions, maybe. But a place all the same.

Sella
That is the first comforting thing anyone has said about this tower.
Luna’s quiet claim holds. For one clear moment, the hall seems to accept it, and the travelers ease with the sound of eating and the crackle of the fire.
Then a thin scrape runs under the floorboards near the far end of the table. The cups tremble once, just enough to spill a line of cider, and every gaze turns toward the sound.

Protect the travelers
“I teleport towards where the sound came from to try and catch who or what made it”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

Luna vanishes in a blink of cold light, not away from the hall but through it. She reappears at the far end of the table, beside the spill, just as the scrape answers from beneath her feet.
The floorboards shudder. A seam splits between two planks, and cider beads up through the gap as if something below has nudged the wood from underneath.

Luna the Dragon Goddess
The sound is under the table, not in the walls.
Luna’s magic leaves a faint, brittle crackle in the air. The nearest cups jump, and one spoon skitters off the table with a bright ping.

Mara
It is here. The tower found me first, and now it is finding all of us.

Edrin
Then show us what comes up, before it decides to crawl out on its own.
A second scrape drags directly beneath the cracked seam, close enough to set every jaw in the room tight. The hall holds its breath around Luna and the trembling boards.

Examine what is under the dining hall floor
“I tell them to stand back as i use my magic to force open the crack and look down inside”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled +2)

Luna lifts both hands, and the hall answers to her will. The split widens with a dry creak, just enough to break the floorboards apart without splintering them. The cider spills in a thin amber line, and cold air breathes up from the gap.

Luna the Dragon Goddess
Stand back.
Edrin and Mara pull away from the table at once, and Sella rises beside them, all three giving Luna room as the boards part further.
Below the dining hall, a hidden chamber opens into view, lined with rough stone and old dust. A lantern hook hangs on one wall, and a small shaft of light catches something pale on the floor below.

Mara
It is not a crawlspace. Someone made a room down there.
The scraping sound ceases at last, replaced by a wet, restless bubbling from under the sill, as if the tower itself is holding its breath.

Sella
Luna... what is in there?
