The tower hallway settles into hush, warm torchlight licking over old stone and polished wood. Edrin stands near the sleeping chamber doors with their shoulders finally unhooking from fear. Sella lingers a little apart, alert still, but no longer braced for blood.

Edrin

Edrin

I keep expecting the walls to split open again. Instead, they just... hum.

Sella

Sella

If this place meant harm, it had chances already. That counts for something.

Luna the Dragon Goddess

Luna the Dragon Goddess

Are you both all right?

Edrin

Edrin

Shaken. Breathing. Which, after tonight, feels like a blessing.

Sella

Sella

I am more concerned about the missing one. But for this moment, I can admit the tower is kind enough to let us rest.

The words hang softly between them. The ancient stone gives its low, steady thrum, and for the first time since the gate, the silence feels chosen rather than forced. Edrin glances toward Luna, waiting, not demanding. Sella folds their hands, ready to listen if Luna has anything to say.

Learn what happened to the missing traveler

I tel them that they are welcime to the clothes in their closets and the food in the dining hall. The only thing I ask of then in return is that they may please stay out of my personal quarters at the end of the hall.

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +3)

Luna speaks with calm certainty, and the hallway seems to listen. The offer of food, spare clothes, and shelter lands like a blanket over raw nerves.

Edrin

Edrin

That is... more generosity than we expected from a tower that already saved our lives.

Sella

Sella

We accept. And your private rooms will remain private.

Edrin exhales a laugh of pure relief. Sella gives Luna a small, respectful nod, and the tension in their hands eases at last.

Edrin

Edrin

I kept waiting for a catch. There is no catch, only rules.

Sella

Sella

If you would rather we keep to the hall and the common rooms, we will. It feels fair.

Down the tower, that faint scraping stirs again, but neither traveler flinches now. The sound stays distant, while Edrin and Sella remain on Luna's side of the threshold.

I gently tell them to rest and recover while i search for their missing friend

Luna gently steers Edrin and Sella toward rest, then turns from the chamber doors and heads down the hallway at an unhurried pace.

Edrin

Edrin

If you find our missing companion, wake us at once. We will not pretend sleep if there is trouble.

Sella

Sella

We trust your tower. We trust you to use care with it, too.

Their words are calm, but the faint scraping from deeper inside the tower answers them like a dry fingernail on stone.

The sound comes from below the upper corridor.

Luna reaches the landing where the passage forks, and the left stair descends into darker levels than the torchlight touches.

A loose stone shifts under her step with a sharp clack, small but loud in the hush.

From below, the scraping stops. A beat later, something down the stairs gives a single, deliberate knock, as if in reply.

I go down the stairs toward the knocking

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +2)

A Moment of Respite

Luna descends, each step measured, and the dark stairwell swallows the torch glow around her boots.

The tower answers with stillness. No more scraping, only the soft press of old stone and her own breath.

At the lower turn, she spots the source of the knock, a small service door set into the wall, its iron latch trembling once before settling.

A thin seam of cold air leaks from beneath it.

Luna reaches the landing below, close enough now to see that the door is not latched from this side.

Above her, Edrin and Sella remain out of sight, but their quiet trust hangs in the corridor behind her like a held breath.

The little door gives one last faint tap from within, as if whatever waits beyond is asking whether she will open it.

I open the service door and reach inside

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled -1)

Mara

Luna takes the door by the latch and pulls it open in one clean motion. Cold air spills out, carrying the faint scrape of stone on stone from the dark beyond.

She reaches inside, and her fingers close around a small, trembling shape tucked just past the threshold.

Edrin

Edrin

That is not a rat... is it?

A little lantern glints in Luna's hand as she draws the thing into the stairlight, and a child-sized traveler, pale with shock and wrapped in torn travel wool, stares up at her from the floor.

Sella

Sella

By the saints, it is Mara. Mara, you are alive.

Mara

Mara

The tower found me first.

Behind Luna, the open doorway exhales a second draft, and the old scraping sound stirs once more from deeper in the tower.

Mara clutches the lantern and looks from Luna to the dark hall, shaken but unmistakably real, waiting to see whether Luna closes the door or follows the sound.
