Obsidian plates crash behind Ares and Thanatos, sealing the guardian's breach. Violet necrotic light leaks through the seams as the circular vault shudders.

A narrow corridor yawns ahead, its walls veined with black roots of magic. Each pulse drags a thin cry from the darkness, as though the Underworld itself is being pulled apart.

A lance of violet light spears across the corridor entrance. The necrotic seal begins knitting shut, while beyond it a distant stone mechanism turns, marking the ritual's progress.

Ares drives his strength into the violet seal. The barrier bows beneath his grip, its woven light splitting around his arms instead of closing.

The corridor holds. Hades moves through first, dragging one hand along the root-veined wall to steady himself.

Valintal follows, ducking beneath the suspended lance of necrotic light. Behind him, the vault floor cracks apart, but the seal remains fixed around Ares's strength.

Ares advances with Thanatos through the held passage. The corridor opens onto a vast black threshold, where stolen death-force spirals toward a crowned silhouette beyond the ritual stones.

No. As Thanatos and Hades draw the stolen essence back toward themselves, the ritual stones offer no resistance and Sisyphus has no countermeasure prepared.

Ares and Valintal strike together, forcing the ritual stones apart and opening a clear path between the black threshold and the spiraling death-force.

Valintal wedges his sword into the shifting gap and leans his failing weight against it. Ares tears the nearest rune-stone from its socket, but its edge cuts deeply across his palm.

With the way cleared, Hades and Thanatos draw the stolen essence inward. Violet strands whip free of the ritual and stream into their waiting hands, while the chamber's dark pulse falters.

The crowned silhouette beyond the stones staggers as the death-force leaves him. Cracks spread through the ritual circle, and Valintal's sword snaps under the strain, leaving him weaponless but still braced in the opening.

Ares presses through the broken stones, joining Hades and Thanatos at the ritual’s heart. His wounded palm closes around the last unstable rune, holding it fast.

Ares drives his strength into the rune as Hades and Thanatos pull in opposite currents. The ritual circle buckles, its black roots shriveling beneath the returning death-force.

Hades straightens as strength returns to him, while Thanatos stands free beside Ares. Valintal remains braced in the shattered passage, alive and weaponless, as the failed ritual dies completely.

The silence breaks with a hollow click beneath the ruined stones. Sisyphus’s fallen crown splits open, revealing a hidden bronze seal pulsing with stolen warmth.

Black roots burst from the seal and coil around the chamber’s far wall, shaping a narrow doorway where no passage stood before. Beyond it, mortal air stirs.

Valintal releases the broken passage and staggers toward the new doorway, empty hand tightening around his sword’s useless hilt. The bronze seal brightens with every breath.

Ares gives Sisyphus a satisfied grin and draws his sword. The bronze blade catches the seal’s stolen warmth as he launches across the ruined chamber.

His war cry and laughter thunder through the doorway. Ares charges straight at Sisyphus, sword raised, while the black roots recoil from his advance.

Sisyphus turns toward the mortal doorway, but Ares reaches him before he can pass. The sword slams into his defenses and drives him back across the threshold.

The bronze seal flares beneath their feet as Ares stands over the staggered king, blade poised and laughter still echoing through the boundary.

Beyond the doorway, the mortal air twists into a narrow stone road suspended over darkness. Sisyphus stumbles backward, and the bronze seal burns brighter beneath his feet.

The road answers his voice. Hidden runes ignite along its edges, and a wall of pale fire rises behind Sisyphus, cutting off the ruined ritual chamber.

The bronze warmth drains from Ares’s blade with a sharp hiss. The sword remains whole, but its divine edge dulls, leaving the weapon heavy and ordinary in his grip.

Sisyphus retreats along the suspended road as cracks spread through the threshold. Behind Ares, the fire seals the doorway, while ahead the king reaches for another waiting sigil.

Sisyphus reaches the waiting sigil just as the last crack splits the road behind him. His palm slams against its center, and the stone answers with a deep, grinding chime.

Runes blaze beneath Ares's boots. The suspended road folds into staggered slabs, each section wrenching upward and apart over the lightless gulf.

A violent pulse races from Sisyphus's sigil toward Ares. The air thickens around him, dragging at armor and limbs while the pale fire behind him narrows to a burning seam.

Ares drives his sword into the nearest rising slab and plants one boot against its edge. The enchanted stone bucks, but his legendary strength holds it beneath him.

He reaches across the widening gap, catches Valintal by the forearm, and hauls him onto the anchored section. The old soldier lands hard but secure.

Ares locks his grip around Valintal's harness and braces both of them against the road's violent tilt. The burning seam behind them cannot separate the pair.

Across the staggered slabs, Sisyphus stares back from his sigil as its pulse falters. The road still shifts, but Ares and Valintal remain firmly joined on solid footing.

He rises over the lightless gulf, cloak streaming behind him, and glides from slab to slab without touching the unstable stones.

Thanatos closes the distance. Each beat of his wings draws a strand of violet force away from the sigil, weakening the runes beneath Sisyphus's hand.

Ahead, Sisyphus's waiting sigil flickers under Thanatos's shadow. The suspended slabs still wrench apart, but the escape route can no longer deny the god of death.

Ares's laughter booms across the fractured road, louder than the boundary wind. The sound strikes Sisyphus's concentration, and his hand slips against the waiting sigil.

The force of Ares's laughter jars the slab beneath him. Its edge bites through his boot and cuts his ankle, but his grip on Valintal's harness holds firm.

Behind the sealed boundary, Hades reaches toward the fractured road, but the pale fire lashes back and forces him away. The wound in his side flares with black light.

The chain snaps onto Valintal's harness. Black light leaves Hades's wound and floods the old soldier's armor instead, while the pale fire around the road flares.

Across the fractured slabs, Sisyphus recoils as his chain loses its hold on Hades. Valintal remains upright, but each pulse steals more strength from his failing body.

Ares locks both arms around Valintal's harness and steadies him against the bucking slabs. The chain grinds deeper into the old soldier's armor, drawing a dark line across his shoulder.

Thanatos dives through the violet storm and reaches the broken sigil. His fingers close around its fractured heart, and death-force tears free in a blinding spiral.

The sigil shatters. The necrotic chain snaps apart, its recoil wrenching Ares's shoulder and leaving Valintal collapsed against him, breathing but unable to stand.

Thanatos kneels beside Valintal, whose breathing has grown quiet. He places two fingers against the old soldier’s brow, and the remaining pain leaves him without a struggle.

Valintal’s body slackens against Ares’s arms. Hades extends one hand through the fading violet light, and the soldier’s shade rises, whole and unburdened, into his keeping.

Ares releases Valintal to their care and turns toward the failing road. Across the fractured slabs, Sisyphus retreats beneath a storm of dying runes.

The road folds and groans beneath Ares’s boots, but he crosses it with relentless strength. Behind him, Thanatos shields Valintal’s body while Hades bears the shade safely away.

Ares reaches the far span and closes on Sisyphus, who faces him at the road’s end with his escape marks extinguished and nowhere left to run.
