Ares steps into the round chamber as violet veins throb through the stone. Behind him, the tunnel mouth starts grinding shut.

Sisyphus sits on jagged obsidian, calm as a judge. In one hand he turns a glowing orb on a tether, and the pulse inside it matches Thanatos's stolen power.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, that orb is the lock. Break it, and the seal on me starts to fail.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Too late for that. Hades's own essence does the work for me, and every beat of it keeps death tied fast.

The orb flares. Across the chamber, the violet veins tighten into a web, and Ares can see the truth at last, Sisyphus has turned Hades's power into a tethered prison around Thanatos.

Kronos

Kronos

He sees it now. Let him decide whether to smash the lock or the chain.

Ares

Where is my uncle? I swear by the Styx, Sisyphus, if you've harmed him...!

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Still asking as though I owe you mercy. Hades is not where you think, and not where you can reach him by force alone.

Kronos

Kronos

Careful. He asked for a location, not a sermon.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Very well. Below the chamber, beyond the hidden seam, the tether runs into a prison of my making. He is bound where death is made to listen.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, he is telling you the truth, but not all of it.

Sisyphus lifts the glowing orb higher. The pulse inside it answers the violet web around Thanatos, and the chamber floor throbs once with a low, sick light.

Kronos watches in silence, his attention fixed on the orb, while Ares now has the answer the chamber was hiding.

Ares drives in, blade and force together. The strike hits the orb dead center, and the tether flashes like a snapped vein of light.

Sisyphus jerks back from the throne, the glow tearing from his grip. The orb tumbles free, and the violet web around Thanatos spasms wide open.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, you do not get to take that from me.

Thanatos draws a sharp breath as the binding loosens across his chest and shoulders. The chamber floor answers with a stronger pulse, light rippling through the cracks beneath their feet.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, the tether is broken. Seize the orb.

The orb skids across the stone toward Ares, leaving a trail of fading violet sparks. Kronos tilts his head from the shadows, his expression sharpening with cold interest at the sudden turn.

Above the chamber, the hidden seam in the ceiling groans as the room begins to wake around the loss. Sisyphus reaches for the fallen light, and the next move belongs to him.

Ares snatches the orb out of the skid, his burned forearm flaring as violet heat bites his palm. The light stutters, then settles under his grip.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Give that back.

Sisyphus lunges from the throne, but the empty air where the orb was hangs between his hands. Thanatos, freed at last, steadies himself and watches Ares with urgent focus.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Hold it still. Do not let it answer him.

The chamber shudders. Violet light races harder through the floor cracks, and dust sifts down from the groaning ceiling seam.

Kronos

Kronos

Yes. Let him reach for it in open view.

In Ares's hand, the orb pulses once, as if listening. Sisyphus freezes, eyes locked on it, while the hidden chamber strains around them, waiting for the next move.

The orb jolts in Ares's grasp, not toward Sisyphus, but toward the floor cracks. Violet light surges up his burned forearm as if something beneath the stone is calling back.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No. That is mine. Open the way and I may yet spare you.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, do not listen. He is feeding the chamber through that thing.

Kronos shifts in the dark above them, and the ceiling seam answers with a deeper groan. A hairline split races across one stone rib, dropping a sheet of dust between Ares and the throne.

Kronos

Kronos

There it is. Let him choose between holding the relic and saving the room.

The orb flashes once, and for an instant the chamber wall shows a bronze jar-shaped outline hidden in the masonry, then vanishes. Sisyphus goes rigid, staring at the wall instead of the god in front of him.

Ares shifts his stance and draws the orb tight against his chest, turning his body into a shield. The violet glow flares against his burn, and the chamber answers with another shudder.

Ares

Ares

He can see the orb. So can I.

Ares

Ares

Back away from it, Sisyphus. It is mine now.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Yours? No. That thing still belongs to my kingdom, and to the bargain beneath it.

Sisyphus halts instead of lunging, but his gaze stays fixed on the orb, white-knuckled with need. Dust rains from the ceiling seam between them.

Thanatos

Thanatos

He is trying to steer the chamber through you. Do not let him touch it.

Kronos watches from the shadow above, amused by the standoff. The bronze jar shape flashes again in the masonry, and the floor cracks spit a brighter violet pulse.
