Dust thins over the cracked arch. Merope flinches as the shadow beneath the stone seems to breathe, and the black grit on Ares’s hand answers with a sickly pulse. The soldier stares from the mud, rigid with dread.

Merope

Merope

I know that pulse. It is not a spell. It is Hades’s power, twisted back on itself.

The corruption crawls along the fissure in the floor, then points downward like a living arrow. From below, the hidden chamber gives off a low, swallowing thrum.

Athena

Athena

Thanatos is being held through that tether. If the corruption spreads, it can pin him in place, and poison the gods who follow the trail.

Then it is a cage. A cage made from a god.

Merope lifts a trembling hand toward the broken seam, refusing to look away from the opening.

Merope

Merope

Sisyphus used a jar to trap what should not be trapped. If you go below now, you may find the knot that binds both Hades and Thanatos.

The pulse in Ares’s hand beats once, hard and clear, like a distant door finally found.

Ares closes the distance in one heavy stride and catches Merope by the wrist before she can pull back from the crack. The violet-black grit on his hand flares. Merope goes still, her breath snagging as the mud-choked soldier watches in silence.

Show me how to undo the jar's seal.

Merope

Merope

You can break it, but that is not the same as unbinding it. The seal answers to what was given freely, then stolen and warped.

Her shaking fingers lift, not toward Ares, but toward the open seam. Below, the hidden chamber answers with a low, hungry pulse, as if listening.

Merope

Merope

The knot is below Corinth, tied through Hades's own power and fastened around the jar. If you want it undone, you must reach the chamber at its heart.

Athena

Then the path is no longer a mystery. It is a descent.

Merope swallows hard and points into the darkness. The soldier recoils deeper into the mud, and the cracked floor yawns like an answer waiting to be claimed.

Ares releases Merope and drops into the seam in one hard motion. Dust bursts upward around his boots as the hidden passage takes his weight and swallows him whole.

The stone gives way fast.

Below, the chamber opens under him, cold and close, with the violet pulse beating through the dark like a second heart.

Merope

Merope

At the heart, not the walls. That is where the knot is fastened.

Then mark the path, Ares. If the chamber turns, the source remains the source.

The soldier flinches back from the crack as the draft rises from below. For a moment, the bronze jar flashes in the gloom of memory, and then the opening frames only darkness and waiting stone.
