The Warden’s Echo and the False Matriarch

The leaderless raiders wheel above the western watchtowers, their formations unraveling as Vaelith and Desus hold the heights. No attack follows; the scattered fliers await direction.

The Devil’s long-distance link carries the command across the cold air. Wings turn away one by one, and the raiders flee without guidance, leaving the towers standing.

Vaelith and Desus remain behind to secure the western heights as the Devil levitates northward alone. He descends beside an eastern frozen coast and walks beneath a hard white sky.

A circular village and small stone castle emerge beyond the ice. Fury ratmen, Nordic warriors, trolls, giants, and ogres crowd around homes arranged about one enormous central fire.

An elderly Nordic woman elder in layered gray furs approaches with a scarred, broad-shouldered middle-aged watch captain wearing blue wool and a fur-lined helm.

The Devil turns from the village fire and surveys the snowbound homes, following faint tracks that leave the outer cottages and vanish beneath a ridge of blue ice.

He reaches the ridge, presses one clawed hand to the frozen stone, and senses a hollow chamber below. With a downward surge of force, he splits the entrance wide.

Cold radiance floods the buried lair. Coffins, stolen belongings, and dark nests collapse into harmless ash as the chamber seals beneath falling ice.

The Devil returns across the snow as the villagers gather beyond the firelight. The elder studies the ruined ridge, while relieved voices rise among the gathered folk.
