The clerk’s warning about needing more than anger comes true at last. Tranis has not been cornered, he has been waiting, and the granary yard answers with a deep timber groan.

Lord Tranis

Lord Tranis

I shall prevail today. Men, attack!

He lunges at the Reeve with steel flashing, while clerks scatter from their tablets and inks. Above them, the grain chutes shudder, their lashings already cut loose.

Battista sees it all at once, the promised trap, the final defense the clerk feared. Tranis means to buy his escape with a buried yard.

Stephen

Stephen

He rigged the chutes! Get clear, now!

Reeve

Reeve

Crown men, hold fast! Guards, seize him!

Timbers start to buckle overhead. Battista stands between steel and collapse as workers scramble for the gaps, and the whole yard tilts toward disaster.

Battista drives in hard and slams Tranis off line, shoulder to chest, before the blade can find the Reeve. The noble staggers sideways into a spill of dust and splintered grain, robbed of the clean strike he wanted.

The impact jars Battista's arm, and his rapier skates against Tranis's guard with a sharp, ringing miss. A fresh crack tears overhead as more chaff rains down across the yard.

Lord Tranis

Lord Tranis

You insolent dog!

Tranis whirls, forced away from the Reeve, but his footing is ruined and his attention splits. The workers flinch back from the falling timber, staring between the collapsing chutes and the lord now thrown off his killing line.

Reeve

Reeve

Hold him! Seal the yard!

The chutes buck harder above them, shedding more debris in a hungry cascade. Battista has made the opening, but the roofline groans louder in answer, and the next fall is already coming.

"Quickly, use your poles to steady the chutes. Get rope to secure them." Battista steadies his rapier tip toward Tranis.

Use your poles to brace the chutes. Get rope on them now.

Battista keeps his rapier leveled at Tranis, and the workers move at once. Poles slam up beneath the sagging beams while hands snatch for rope, turning panic into rough support.

Stephen

Stephen

On it. Keep him pinned!

Stephen and two laborers haul a crossbeam into place. The nearest chute shudders, then holds under the brace instead of giving way.

Lord Tranis

Lord Tranis

No, you will not take this from me!

Tranis lunges a half-step and meets the rapier point, forced back by steel and by the crowd that now faces him instead of the roof.

Reeve

Reeve

Enough. The yard is under Crown command.

Above them, the worst of the collapse settles into a harsh, failing rattle. Dust still falls, but the chutes stop dropping into the yard.

The dust-thick air breaks on a sharp cry from the rafters. A shadowy figure kicks loose from the upper braces and lands hard in the yard, a masked runner with a coil of cut rope and a sack of iron wedges. He points past Tranis, not at him, but at the braced chute. Someone else planned for the collapse.

Vey

Vey

Not one trap. A second hand set this.

Tranis freezes for half a breath, his alarm no longer loud enough to hide itself. The runner snaps, "Move, or the whole yard comes down on the writ and the men alike!" Kaelen turns toward the voice, and Stephen starts for the stranger with a curse.

Battista retreats a step where he can keep Tranis and the masked man in view.

Battista shifts back a single measured step, keeping the yard spread before him. Tranis and the masked runner stay in the same line of sight, while the broken chutes and bracing poles frame the danger between them.

Lord Tranis

Lord Tranis

You let him land here? Seize that man, now!

Reeve

Reeve

No. The Crown sees you plainly, Tranis. Not another blade moves until I say it.

The runner jerks the sack open and the wedges clatter across the trampled grain. He lunges for the nearest support post, aiming to pry at the brace rather than fight Stephen head-on.

Battista

Battista

He is after the supports, not Battista.

Stephen cuts across the runner’s path, forcing him off the post and into the open. Kaelen raises his weapon from the side, and the masked man falters under the tightening ring of bodies.

Vey

Vey

That is the hand I was looking for.

The runner snatches for the rope, but there is nowhere left to slip. The yard holds him exposed, with Tranis shouting over his shoulder and the Crown’s men closing in.

The mask man brandishes a short curved sword, lunging at Stephen.

Battista slips inside the lunge, and the masked saboteur’s curved blade meets rapier steel before it reaches Stephen. The runner’s arm jars wide, his footing breaks on the spilled wedges, and the attack dies in the open.

Stephen uses the opening, driving the man backward into the churned grain. The short sword skitters free, and the runner’s shoulder slams against a crate with nowhere left to lean.

From above, the yard’s lines are plain, Stephen and Kaelen sealing the runner’s exits while Battista stands between him and the broken support. The trap has become a ring.

Vey

Vey

There. His hand is empty now.

Reeve

Reeve

Good. Take him alive. The Crown will want the mask and the name beneath it.

The saboteur freezes at that, and something pale flashes under the edge of the mask, a sealed tag tied to his belt with Tranis’s colors.

Beyond him, the exposed support post gives one harsh groan, but it holds. The runner is caught, the yard stays standing, and the next choice is whether to strip the mask here or drag him before Tranis.

Stephen hooks two fingers beneath the mask’s edge and yanks. The cloth tears free in one sharp pull, and the saboteur’s face comes into the cold yard light.

He is younger than his voice suggested, with a clerk’s pale mouth, a split lip, and Tranis’s tag still tied at his belt. His eyes flick once to the Reeve, then down.

Stephen

I know you. You tally grain at the south tables.

Reeve

The exposed post groans again overhead, dust trickling through the beams, but the braces hold. The ring stays tight.

Vey

He came with Tranis’s colors. That tag is his proof.

The clerk flinches at that, bare-faced now and cornered before the Crown and the workers. He swallows once, and does not speak.

Battista’s order cuts across the yard, and the nearest workers surge back to the braces. Hands slam timber under the sagging chutes, shoulders straining as dust shakes loose from the beams.

The clerk on the crate shifts under Stephen’s grip, forced upright before the Reeve. His mouth works once, then he steadies himself under the crowd’s stare.

Stephen

Joren, tally clerk to Tranis’s south tables. I handled the grain accounts.

Reeve

And the seal? Who put you to false work?

Joren

Above them, the braces bite into the load and hold. One worker recoils with a splinter in his palm, but the yard stays standing, and Joren’s confession lands cleanly in the open.

Battista moves before the yard can breathe, cutting across Tranis’s line with a hard, efficient step. His blade drives the lord’s swing wide, and the escape lane Vanishes into steel and stumbling feet.

Kaelen snaps into the opening Battista makes, and the would-be route to the gate closes under the captain’s shield and boot. Tranis is left boxed in, his sword arm checked and his sudden alarm plain for all to see.

Lord Tranis

Lord Tranis

Out of my way! Move!

The cry only hardens the crowd. One of the workers, still pale from the splinter in his hand, kicks a fallen brace toward the threshold, turning the exit into a barrier instead of a path.

Reeve

Reeve

Hold him. The Crown takes him here.

Tranis’s sword wavers for the first time, not from lack of will but because the whole yard has shifted against him. Battista’s strike has not just stopped the break, it has exposed the only clean gap in Tranis’s trap, and Kaelen is already flooding it.

Joren lunges low, clipping Kaelen’s boot out from under him. The captain crashes to one knee, shield dipping, just as Tranis surges in over the opening with a vicious downward cut.

Battista is already moving. He vaults the fallen line, rapier snapping up to catch the lord’s blade dead in its arc, steel ringing hard above Kaelen’s bowed head.

The clash shudders through Tranis’s arm. His strike stalls mid-fall, forced aside by Battista’s blade, and the exposed killing line breaks before it can land.

Battista’s dagger drives in under the ribs of Tranis’s side, quick and close. The lord jerks with a strangled gasp, his charge collapsing into a stagger.

Kaelen drops hard to the grit, one hand braced to keep from rolling into the braces. Joren’s sweep leaves him sprawled and off balance, his opening spent.

Tranis bends around the wound, alarm flashing raw across him. His sword hand wavers, and the yard tightens around that single faltering breath.

The Reeve’s voice cuts through the yard. Hold him, now. The Crown’s writ is still open, but Tranis is not reaching the captain again.

Battista swings his rapier smashing the guard into Tranis sword hand, forcing him to drop the weapon. Then extracts his dagger from Between Tranis's ribs. KIcks him the the ground placing his foot to Tranis throat. "Reeve, have your men bind his would. I still would prefer to see Tranis stand trial for his crimes. Without giving him room to recover, Battista wrenches the dagger free from Tranis’s side. The wounded man folds with a sharp gasp, his sudden alarm flashing bright in the lantern light.

Battista kicks Tranis flat and plants a boot against his throat, pinning him in the yard. The lord’s breath comes thin beneath the pressure, his hands clawing empty at the air.
