The cart stops under the south loft, and the side gate stands open on the first pale wash of dawn. Steward’s men wait inside with work-hardened hands and wary faces, expecting a routine unload.
Battista has the hidden compartment open at the wagon’s heart, the sealed crates, lamp oil, wheel grease, and the side-gate papers laid bare. The keys glint beside them, proof and access in one breath.

Kaelen
There. They are committed. If those papers match the gatehouse mark, we move now.

Vey
This is the chance. If they slip through that gate, Tranis slips with them.
Battista steps to the wagon edge, every line of the route clear at once, from granary yard to side gate to the road beyond Malkich. The stewards do not yet know the trap is already closing.

The Traveling Bard
They are looking for the shipment. Give them the papers, or give Kaelen the signal, and the lord’s exit is cut off at dawn.
“Battista studies the faces of the stewards men. Do I know any of these faces? Is there anyone here that may recognize me?”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Battista reads the steward’s men at a glance. Two are yard hands from the lower ward, one is a gate porter with a split thumbnail, and the lantern-bearer has a grain-mill scar on his cheek. None are strangers to Malkich.

Battista
I know that porter. He saw me in the market the week before Graylis was taken.
Recognition flickers across the porter’s face too, then hardens into caution as his gaze finds Battista’s hands and the captain beside him.

The Steward's Men
You. I have seen you near the counting steps. Why are you here with the captain?

Kaelen
Because your load is marked, and your route is bought. Stand fast, and this stays a seizure, not a hanging.

Vey
They know him. That one can name us if he shouts.
The men by the gate shift backward, no longer just wary but ready to bolt or call out. One hand tightens around a lantern pole as the first shout gathers in his throat.
“Stand fast and be safe. We know these times are hard for the common worker to feed his family. You are obligated by the King's law to obey your lord's commands. We do not seek you harm. We seek justice on those who make these plots and skulkery. Speak and go free. Flee and you will be imprisoned.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Battista
Stand fast, and you stay safe. We are not here for you. Speak, and you go free.
Battista keeps his voice level and lets the promise sit between the gate and the wagon. The porter’s shoulders loosen first, then the lantern-bearer lowers the pole a handspan.

The Steward's Men
Free? You mean it? The steward pays late, and he pays in fear.

Kaelen
He means it. Tell me who loads the side gate, and you walk out of this road alive.

The Steward's Men
We load what we are given. Red-threaded keys, lamp oil, sealed packets. The steward says nothing, only that the cart must pass before dawn.

Vey
Red-threaded keys. So that is the lock he trusts.
The porter swallows hard and points past the wagon, toward the shadowed service cut. He does not shout. The lantern-bearer stills, and the threat of alarm breaks apart into a shaky bargain.
“To where do these items travel from here?”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -3)

Battista
To where does this load go from here?

The Steward's Men
Below the granary, through the side cut. The papers go with it, and the lamp oil too, then on to Tranis’s own store below the hall.

Kaelen
So the trap has a throat. Good.
The porter blurts the route, then flinches as if the words themselves cost him. One of the men at the gate makes a small, desperate sign toward the cut, and the lantern-bearer’s hand tightens on his pole before he lets it go slack again.

Vey
Red-threaded keys, side cut, Tranis’s store. It all fits too well.
The bargain holds, but the porter's breath comes fast. He has answered, and now he waits to see whether Battista spends that answer on mercy or motion.
“You have shown yourselves to be good men. After Tranis is imprisoned for his crimes, ask for Battista in the Monkey's Den. We will help you find work or sort out any legal issues for your involvement with Tranis.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +0)

Battista
You have shown yourselves to be good men. After Tranis is imprisoned for his crimes, ask for Battista in the Monkey's Den. We will help you find work, or sort out any legal trouble from Tranis.
The words settle over the gate like a cloak. The porter swallows, then looks to the others instead of to the road, as if hearing a door open where before there was only fear.

The Steward's Men
Work, or a lawyer's ear, after all this? You would do that for men who carried Tranis's loads?

Kaelen
If they help bring him down, yes. That is how a city heals, one choice at a time.

Vey
The Monkey's Den is safer than this road, and a better place to hide a new life.
The porter glances at the red-threaded keys, then back to Battista, hope and shame wrestling in his face. One of the gate men gives a slow, grateful nod and lowers his hands fully.

The Steward's Men
Then we will remember the Den. If the trap closes and we are still standing, we come to you.
“"Good, then we will take the cart onward to Tranis' finale." Battista extracts a thin black hood from his coat and pulls it over his head, pulling the front down to obscure his face. "I will drive the cart."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +3)

Battista cuts across the yard with the hood rising in his hands, and the wagon team answers at once. The red-threaded keys flash once at his belt, then vanish beneath the dark cloth as he pulls the hood low.

Battista
Good. We take the cart onward to Tranis's finale. I will drive it.
The steward's men exchange a quick look, then step aside instead of blocking him. One of them lifts the traces clear with both hands, making room for Battista to climb up without a word.

Kaelen
Take the lead, then. If anyone stops that cart, they stop with my name on their ears.

Vey
He wears the hood like he was born under it.
Battista seats himself on the bench and gathers the reins. The cart rolls, and the open road ahead is no longer theirs to guess at, the side gate route already given over by the men who feared Tranis most.
From above, the road and gate line up like a trap being drawn shut, with Battista at its moving edge and the steward's men shrinking back beside the granary wall.
+ New Item Acquired
black hood
“Battista flicks the reigns to spur the horse into movement toward the side cut.”
FAILURE (Legendary Agility, rolled -4)

Battista snaps the reins, and the horse surges against the traces. The wagon lurches, then skids sideways on the road’s ruts instead of taking the turn cleanly.
The hood slips a finger’s width over his brow, hiding more of his face, but the cart’s front wheels catch and drag. The side cut is still ahead, only now the team has lost its neat line.

Kaelen
Easy. If you jerk it like that, you give them a reason to look.

Vey
The keys are still on you, Battista. Keep the wagon honest, not fast.
The steward’s men tense at the gate, hands dropping closer to their tools, watching the wagon wobble instead of sweep past.
The red-threaded keys knock once under Battista’s cloak as the cart settles into a noisy, crooked roll, forcing the team to decide whether to steady it or let the guard at the cut notice the clamor.
“Gentlemen. If you could use the polls to slide the wagon into the ruts leading to the side cut. My thanks.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -1)

Battista lifts a hand from the reins and keeps his voice low. The steward’s men hear the courtesy in it, and the fear beneath it.

Battista
Gentlemen, use the poles to slide the wagon into the ruts leading to the side cut. My thanks.
One man blanches, then nods. Two others grab their poles and step into the road, angling their shoulders against the wagon’s drift.

The Steward's Men
Aye. Easy now. Keep it straight for us.
Wood bites against wheel rim and axle. The wagon shudders, then settles into the deeper ruts with a more obedient creak.

Kaelen
Good. Hold that line. Quietly.
The red-threaded keys knock once under Battista’s cloak as the cart glides on, no longer loud enough to betray them unless someone is already listening.
“My thanks again. I hope to meet and share a drink in friendship when these events have come to their full conclusion.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +1)

Battista’s thanks draws a few wary smiles. The men keep their poles braced, but the fear in their shoulders loosens.

Battista
My thanks again. I hope to share a drink with you in friendship when this is done.

The Steward's Men
One of the men gives a rough chuckle. Another nods, not quite meeting Battista’s hooded gaze. "A drink sounds better than the steward’s lash."

Kaelen
Kaelen’s mouth tilts, almost a smile. "If this works, you’ll have a name worth drinking to."

Vey
Vey watches the red-threaded hood settle and the men’s hands stay steady. "Good. Keep them talking," they think, "men are easier to move when they believe they chose it."
The wagon stays quiet in the ruts, rolling on with only a low wooden sigh. The side cut lies ahead, dark and waiting, while the keys under Battista’s cloak give one small, hidden clink.
“The cart rolls up to the side cut, Battista glances around, examining his surroundings.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

The wagon noses into the side cut. Battista scans the dark bend and catches the shape of a watch post tucked into the wall, half-hidden by stacked crates and a hanging tarp.

Battista
The cut opens wider than it looks from the road.
Below the road, a side gate stands ajar just enough for a cart to slip through, and beyond it the granary yard lies hushed under pale pre-dawn mist.

Kaelen
That’s the entrance. Keep moving, but slowly.

Vey
If Tranis is inside, this is where the net tightens.
The steward’s men stiffen at the sight of the yard, their poles angled low as they realize the route ends here.
Battista sees the red-threaded keys at last matched to the lock hardware by the gate, waiting in plain view as the wagon rolls into the trap.
“Battista urges the horses on toward the gate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Battista snaps the reins, and the horses answer at once, shoulders bunching as the wagon surges toward the ajar gate.
The steward’s men recoil from the wheels, poles lifting out of the way as the cart rolls past their guard line.

Kaelen
There. Take it through.

Vey
Once the wagon crosses, the trap closes behind it.
The side gate yawns open in front of them, mist curling around the threshold as the wagon’s front wheels breach the yard.
Inside, the granary wall and stacked crates swallow the road noise, and the hidden route becomes the place to spring or be sprung.
From the yard ahead comes a muffled shout, not yet alarm, but close enough to demand an answer.
“Battista shouts back. "we are here, lets get this wagon unloaded quickly"”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +0)

Battista
We are here. Let us get this wagon unloaded quickly.

Kaelen
Aye, quick now. Keep your voices calm and your faces busy.
The men at the gate hear the command and take it for routine. Shoulders ease, feet shift, and the tension in the yard loosens just enough for the ruse to hold.

Vey
Then move. If they think we belong, they will let us through the mouth of the trap.
Battista’s shout carries cleanly into the mist, and the yard answers with obedience instead of alarm. The wagon is now accepted as work, not intrusion.
Ahead, the open route into the granary waits, and the first shouted warning from inside drops into wary silence.
“Battista urges the horses forward to Tranis' location”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Battista flicks the reins, and the wagon answers at once. The horses lean into the trace, hooves biting wet earth as the yard gives way before them.
Kaelen steps aside to clear the path, one hand still raised to keep the workers looking anywhere but at the load.
Vey rides the edge of the wagon, eyes fixed ahead as the mist parts around the gate mouth.
The false calm breaks cleanly. The wagon rolls through the granary threshold and into the inner yard where Tranis’s route lies waiting.
A shout rises from deeper inside, sharp enough to turn heads, and the first men beyond the passage start to move.
Somewhere ahead, red-threaded keys rattle against wood, and the open way into Tranis’s hold starts to close behind them.
“Drive to Tranis's store”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)
