The Titan's Unexpected Devotion

The Titan lets out a long, wet snuffling sound, its massive nostrils flaring as it nudges Skink closer toward its armored neck plates. It ignores the rubble and the gaping sewer ceiling entirely, choosing instead to nuzzle its snout into the goblin’s mud-stained boots with startling, gentle precision.

Skink

Skink

Easy there, you massive, starry-eyed brute. I know I am a vision of charm, but let us keep things professional.

Skink

Skink

My demonic lineage is truly a force of nature. Even the monsters of the deep cannot help but surrender their hearts to the legend of Skink.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Are you joking? It nearly crushed us both a moment ago, and now it acts like a pampered house-cat? This makes no sense.

Kaelen

Kaelen

I must be suffering from a concussion. Nothing else explains why this horror has decided to worship a goblin in torn robes.

The Titan rumbles again, a low vibration that makes the remaining stone beams shake. It turns its golden, slit-pupiled eye toward Kaelen, emitting a sharp, warning hiss, before turning back to Skink with a soft, cooing chirp.

There, there, my lovely scaled enigma. You clearly have the refined taste to recognize royalty when you see it. Perhaps a bit of neck-scratching is in order for such a loyal companion?

Skink reaches out with a dramatic, practiced flourish, his hand trembling slightly but his expression one of pure, unearned confidence. As his fingers brush against the rough, obsidian-like scales of the creature's neck, the Titan lets out a long, shuddering sigh of contentment, its massive head dipping lower to press firmly against the goblin's chest.

Skink

Skink

I knew it. The beast senses the infernal hum in my blood. It is practically begging me to lead it out of this damp pit and into a life of luxury.

Merrick

Merrick

It is listening to him. The beast is actually listening to the goblin. I have seen many strange things in the tunnels, but this... this is beyond reason.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It is not reason you are seeing, Merrick. It is recognition. There is a primal resonance at play here that even your cold logic cannot bridge.

Onward, my hulking treasure! The path to our glory lies ahead, and I shall not be delayed by mere rubble.

Skink leaps atop a jagged slab of stone, striking a flamboyant pose with one hand pointing dramatically toward the darkness of the tunnel. His tattered robe flutters as he balances with surprising agility. The Titan, seemingly transfixed by his confident command, gives a low, rumbling groan and begins to heave its massive bulk forward, crushing smaller pieces of debris beneath its weight to clear a path.

Skink

Skink

A true hero commands the elements themselves. This creature is merely the first of many conquests. Once we reach the surface, the poets will write songs of the goblin who tamed the mountain.

Kaelen

Kaelen

It obeys him like a loyal hound. I cannot reconcile this with the terror I felt just moments ago.

Merrick

Merrick

Do not grow comfortable, Kaelen. Whatever spell or sorcery this creature is under, it remains a Titan. If the goblin falters, we are all dead.

The Titan pauses, its massive head twitching as if sensing something deeper in the darkness ahead.

What is it, my sweet, mountain-born lady? Is there a terror lurking in the shadows, or perhaps a secret treasure you wish to show your favorite goblin?

Skink leans forward, his small, dirt-streaked hand reaching out to tenderly pat the Titan’s massive, pebbled snout. The creature halts its heavy breathing, its oversized, bioluminescent eye dilating as it leans into his touch. The rumbling in its chest shifts from a low growl to a rhythmic, contented purr that vibrates through the very foundations of the sewer.

That... was no ordinary bluff.

The Stranger’s open hands fold together at their waist, curiosity shining brighter than caution. Merrick angles his sword down another notch, studying Skink as if a mask has just slipped.

Merrick

Merrick

He did not stumble through it. He meant every word, or convinced us he did.

From the pipe mouth, the unseen creature answers with a pleased click, then goes still again, as if awaiting instruction only Skink can give.

Skink

Skink

The words sound better when he does not think about them too hard.

Kaelen

Kaelen

If it understands that tone, then it understands you. That is not nothing.

The Stranger leans a little closer, eyes fixed on Skink’s face instead of the dark pipe now. The tunnel quiets around them, patient and expectant.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then tell me, Skink, where did you learn to speak to a beast like that?

*Shrug*

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Skink answers without a word. He gives the tiniest shrug, all lifted shoulder and loose wrist, as if the mystery is too small to bother naming.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That is either a very wise answer, or a very cruel one.

The Stranger’s mouth curves despite themself, and their gaze stays fixed on Skink with open delight. Merrick huffs once, but the sword in his hand remains lowered.

Merrick

Merrick

He does have a talent for making silence look deliberate.

From the pipe, the creature gives a slow, satisfied click. A slick shape shifts in the dark, then settles again, patient as a hound waiting at heel.

Kaelen

Kaelen

I have fought men with less discipline than that thing shows now.

The Stranger tilts their head, studying Skink as if the answer is written on him in invisible ink. Their voice softens, curious and almost amused.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then keep your secrets, Skink. But tell me one thing, does it obey your blood, your voice, or your will?

*Now what though?(*

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

The tunnel quiets enough for the dripping pipe to sound like a second heartbeat. Skink lets the silence hang, and the three companions wait on him instead of the darkness.

Skink

Skink

Blood, voice, or will.

The creature in the pipe answers first, a slow click that feels almost like assent. Merrick’s brows lift. The Stranger’s smile widens.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Not blood alone, then. It listens after you choose it.

Merrick

Merrick

And because he chose it back, by the looks of things.

The Stranger folds their hands, studying Skink with open, delighted focus, as if the answer delights them more than it frightens them.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That is the trick, isn't it? You do not command it like a master. You invite it like a secret.

From the pipe, the waiting shape shifts once more, then settles, calm as a pet at its keeper’s feet. The question is answered plainly now, if only by the way the tunnel listens to Skink’s silence.

I think it's just kindness... Like, the not fake kind, and a probably profoundly disproportionate relationship with mortality and danger

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Skink’s words settle into the damp air like a coin dropped into deep water. The Titan in the pipe goes still, then answers with a slow, grateful scrape against stone.

Skink

Skink

The Stranger

The Stranger

Kindness, then. Honest kindness. That is rarer than crowns in this city.

Merrick

Merrick

And stranger still, it works on things that ought to bite first.

The Stranger tilts their head, the delight in their face softening into something more careful, more curious.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You look at death like a fellow traveler. Is that why it trusts you?

From the pipe, the hidden creature gives one last clicking murmur, patient and waiting, as if Skink has already answered its only question.

Merrick snorts once, then reins it back into a crooked smile. The Stranger watches Skink with open, amused patience.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You do that like a scholar at prayer. Is that goblin custom, or your own invention?

Merrick

Merrick

If it is, I am not certain the world was ready for it.

The Stranger’s eyes flick to the pipe, then back to Skink, curiosity warming into something almost companionable.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It listens to you because you are not afraid of being strange. That much is plain. But I still wonder what it hears when you speak to it.

*Laughs at what Marrick says because he gets it*

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Skink lets out a low, throaty laugh, the kind that says he understands the joke and refuses to surrender the pose. His shoulders loosen as the sound rolls out of him.

Merrick

Merrick

There, that one feels honest. I was beginning to think you only knew how to preen and menace stonework.

The Stranger’s grin widens at the sound, their gaze shifting from Skink to Merrick with open delight.

The Stranger

The Stranger

He gets it. That is the surprising part, and perhaps the best part.

A soft clicking answer drifts from the pipe behind them, steady and obedient. The Titan remains hidden in the dark, but the sound carries patience rather than hunger.

Merrick

Merrick

Whatever this is, it is not a trick I know. And yet it keeps working.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Skink, what do you hear when it clicks like that? I would like the truth, if you will give it.

"It's curious, I don't think anyone else tried to talk to it before, at least not in a way it understood, it's probably used to shouting and fleeing"

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Skink

Skink

It is curious. I do not think anyone else tried to speak to it in a way it could understand. Most likely it is used to shouting and fleeing.

The words settle into the damp air. Even the Titan’s clicking seems to quiet, as if listening through the dark.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That... would explain a great deal. Fear is a crude language.

Merrick

Merrick

So you are not forcing it. You are answering it.

From the pipe, the rhythm changes, one slow click after another, like approval. Skink’s dagger catches a smear of wet grime when he lowers it, and the Titan’s unseen bulk shifts closer to the opening.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You hear it as intention, then. Not hunger, not rage.

Merrick

Merrick

He means it has been treated like a beast. Skink speaks to it like a witness.

A pause follows, companionable despite the sewer’s drip and the faint rumble of settling stone. The Titan keeps clicking softly from the dark, waiting for Skink's next cue.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Trouble, yes. The kind that follows a story when someone names it aloud.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That sounds suspiciously like a lesson.

Wolfie tips his head, still watching past the portal, then flicks two fingers. The violet edge steadies, and the distant clicking below becomes clearer, not louder, just shaped.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Stabby never came at a straight road. He always found the side way, the cut, the ugly little gap nobody else trusted.

Merrick

So the gap is the safer choice.

Wolfie’s mouth twitches. Below the seam, the shadows part enough to show a narrow opening in the sewer wall, half-hidden by broken stone and black water.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Safer is not the word. But it is the one that keeps your feet moving.

The portal’s light spills across Skink’s hands, the side gap, and the wet grit between them. The choice is plain now, and Wolfie leaves the question hanging there like an invitation.

...

The seam hums softly while Wolfie studies the opening below, his amusement fading into a thoughtful quiet. Skink’s pause lets the moment settle instead of rushing past it.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Stabby liked that sort of choice. Never the grand route, always the hidden one.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That sounds less like cowardice and more like taste.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Exactly. He had good instincts, and worse manners.

The violet light rests on the wet stone between them, calm as a lantern at rest, while the side gap waits in easy silence.
