The iron gate of the Blackroot holding cell slams shut with a bone rattling echo. Skink clings to the cold bars, his tattered robe snagged on a rusted hinge. A heavy footfall approaches from the damp stone corridor.

Bram
You have been rattling those bars for an hour, little filth. Keep it up and I will see if your tongue fits through the keyhole.

Skink
This brute has no eye for refinement, but my charm is a tide he cannot hold back. I must dazzle him before I am forced to conjure my infernal lineage.

Skink
My good man, surely there is a misunderstanding. A creature of my pedigree does not belong in a cage. I am a prince of the lower planes, or very near to it.

Bram
You are a goblin who tried to steal a tavern owner's wig. Shut your mouth. The magistrate arrives at dawn to decide if you hang or toil in the salt mines.
Bram leans in close, the torchlight flickering across his scarred jaw, and tosses a moldy crust of bread onto the straw-covered floor.

Bram
Eat, or don't. Does it matter to you?

FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -3)

Skink
Now is the time to unleash the infernal flame that courses through my veins. A little brimstone, a little smoke, and he shall be begging to be my manservant.

Skink
Behold, mortal! The blood of the pit boils within me! Feel the heat of the underworld!
Skink contorts his small frame, veins bulging on his forehead as he attempts to manifest his demonic heritage. Instead of a majestic plume of hellfire, a tiny, pathetic puff of grey, foul smelling soot erupts from his nostrils. It catches in his own throat, sending him into a violent, hacking coughing fit that leaves him doubled over and red-faced.

Bram
Was that it? Are you choking on the bread, or is that a new form of goblin performance art?

Skink
My lungs are burning, and my pride is wounded. That was supposed to be a terrifying display of power, not an embarrassing case of indigestion.
Bram lets out a dry, rasping laugh, his heavy iron keys jangling against his hip as he turns to leave.

Bram
Try not to die before dawn. It would be a shame to miss the hanging.

“Wait! Of course! His cult followers! ... If only they knew where I was”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Skink
Wait! You simpleton, do not turn your back on royalty! My kin hear my silent call across the black earth, and they shall swarm these walls like locusts when they realize their master is waylaid!

Skink
They are thick-headed and probably eating mud right now, but they are legion. If I can just broadcast my plight with enough conviction, the vibrations will carry.
Skink closes his eyes, pressing his spindly fingers to his temples while humming a rhythmic, guttural chant that he insists is an ancient summoning rite. The damp walls of the cell seem to resonate, or perhaps it is just the shifting of the subterranean pipes. Suddenly, a faint, high-pitched scratching sound echoes from the drainage grate in the corner. Bram pauses, his hand hovering over the heavy iron bolt of the cell door, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his face as he glances toward the sound.

Bram
What is that racket? Did you stash a rat in here, goblin?

Skink
Yes, keep looking at the floor. Fear the unseen legions of the great Skink!

“Hahaha!”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Skink
Behold, the scratching of a thousand claws! My dark brethren grow impatient, and the stone itself begins to weep at their approach. Shall you open the door and face your doom, or shall you witness the walls crumble upon your puny head?

Skink
That should rattle the coward. My ancestors really did bless me with the gift of gab, even if I have to make the sound effects myself.
The scratching intensifies, rhythmic and metallic, as the drainage grate suddenly pops entirely from its rusted frame. A cloud of black silt erupts into the cell, swirling around Skink like a chaotic vortex. Bram stumbles backward, his boots sliding against the slick stone, eyes wide as he fumbles for the hilt of his heavy iron mace. He is no longer looking at the goblin, but at the dark, hollow abyss of the drainage pipe.

Bram
Is that magic or just a sewer rat? I am not dying in this hole for a bit of extra pay.

Escape through the drainage pipe

“Crawl through”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

Skink
Fear not, noble guard! My kin are merely hungry, and they find the scent of your terror quite exquisite. I shall depart before they decide to season you with their own vile appetites.

Skink
That was close. If I move fast enough while he is squinting into that hole, I can slip into the pipe before he realizes I am not a demon, just a very small, very agile escape artist.
Skink lunges, his small frame blurring as he dives headfirst into the dark maw of the drainage pipe. The black silt clings to his robes, coating him in a layer of grime that hides his desperate scramble. Bram yelps, turning too late as the goblin vanishes into the gloom of the sewage system, leaving behind only the echoing splash of a successful departure.

Bram
By the gods, he is gone! If the captain finds that cell empty, I will be the one in chains by dawn.

The dark pipe is far from empty. As Skink crawls through the slick stone tunnel, he freezes. Ahead, a pair of glowing, yellow eyes blink in the darkness, followed by the metallic click of a crossbow being cocked.
Stranger
You are late, little gremlin. The sewer rats have been waiting for their feast.

Skink
That is definitely not an Imp, and that definitely looks like a very sharp, very pointed bolt aimed right at my charming nose. Maybe I should have stayed in the cell.
A figure steps into the pale light filtering from the cell, revealing a hunched, hooded creature draped in rags that mirror Skink's own style. It is no guard, but a rival scavenger with a rusted weapon and a look of cold, predatory hunger.

Skink
I have a dagger. And I am a descendant of demons. But mostly, I am very, very small and currently caught in a very narrow tube.
