The sewage tunnel reeks of rot and wet stone. Skink wipes grime from his brow, his tattered robes clinging to his slim frame as he stares down the hooded figure.

The Stranger
The Blackroot guards have a knack for cruelty, do they not. It would be a tragedy if their incompetence led to their ruin tonight.

Skink
This mysterious shadow knows true class when he sees it. Clearly, he senses the royal infernal blood coursing through my veins.

Skink
My charms have always been a burden, my friend. Everyone wants a piece of me, especially those who wish to see my radiance snuffed out.

Merrick
Stop preening, you little vermin. I am not here for your ego. The tunnels ahead are clear, but the guards are already searching for the source of your ruckus. Move.
A new figure, Merrick, steps from behind a sewage pipe, his heavy cloak dripping with sludge. He ignores the goblin and points toward the exit, his hand resting firmly on the hilt of a rusted shortsword.

Escape the searching guards
“Meh meh meh *Fine, but only because *I* wanted to go that way *anyway**”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Skink
Meh meh meh. Fine. I was planning on taking that route anyway. The acoustics in the other tunnel were dreadfully dull, and I require a path worthy of my impending escape.

Skink
These two clearly need my guidance to navigate the shadows. It is fortunate for them that I have such a keen eye for architectural potential.

Merrick
Your ego is as bloated as a drowned rat. Follow the path, or I will leave you for the guards to find.
Merrick turns on his heel, his cloak swirling as he marches into the darkness of the secondary tunnel. The Stranger stays back for a heartbeat, his eyes glinting with amusement beneath the heavy hood.

The Stranger
Do try to keep up, little prince. The sewer rats are hungrier than you think.
He gestures toward the tunnel entrance before following Merrick, leaving Skink alone at the junction.
“*Should catch up to my followers too*”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Skink
Behold, the elegance of the dash. I move like a whisper of smoke through the sludge.

Skink
They think they are leading me, but in truth, I am already ahead. My grace is simply too refined for these common tunnels.
Skink lunges forward, his tattered robes flapping as he executes a perfect, silent slide across the slick mossy floor. He slips past the damp archway and comes to a halt right behind the cloaked duo, his jagged blade held with practiced, if slightly theatrical, poise.

Merrick
You move with surprising silence, goblin. Do not mistake this for skill. It is likely just your unnatural, stunted gait.

The Stranger
Let him enjoy his moment, Merrick. He seems to think he is the one hunting us.
The Stranger stops abruptly, the tunnel floor giving way to a sudden, murky drop-off that reveals a swarm of glowing, pale eyes peering up from the depths below.

Skink
Those are far too many eyes for a simple sewer. I suppose I shall have to handle this with my legendary charm.

Survive the swarm in the pit
“Make... Outlandish claims at the pit”
FAILURE (Mediocre Liar, rolled +1)

Skink
Fear not, creatures of the pit! I am Skink, of the noble Imp-blooded lineage, and I command you to bow before your natural superior!
Skink strikes an exaggerated pose, chest puffed out and arms spread wide over the abyss. His confident grin falters as the glowing eyes in the pit blink in unison, revealing dozens of razor-sharp, jagged teeth rising toward the ledge.

Merrick
You fool. You did not charm them, you alerted them to an easy meal.

The Stranger
This one is beyond help. A waste of breath and space.
The swarm surges upward, a writhing mass of scaled, subterranean limbs clawing at the stone rim, forcing Skink to scramble back as the floor begins to crumble under the weight of the encroaching horde.

Skink
Perhaps the Imp blood is dormant today. Or perhaps these are just very rude peasants.
“Run”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Skink pivots with supernatural grace just as the stone ledge disintegrates. His boots find purchase on a protruding pipe, and he vaults over the gap with a flourish of his tattered robes, landing nimbly on the far side of the crumbling edge.

Merrick
Stop posing and start running, you idiot! They are breaching the corridor!

The Stranger
A lucky twitch, nothing more. He has no mastery over his own limbs.

Skink
See? The legendary agility of an Imp descendant. They are clearly just jealous of my lithe form.
Behind him, the wall of glowing eyes spills into the passage, the sound of hundreds of claws skittering against the stone echoing like a swarm of angry locusts. Merrick and the Stranger are already sprinting into the dark tunnel ahead, their silhouettes fading into the gloom. The path ahead is narrow, slick with sludge, and rapidly filling with the chittering shadows.
“*Imps are good at illusion magic, maybe he'll get lucky*”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Skink throws his hands wide, fingers dancing in a complex weave. He channels his pride, whispering a jagged, half-remembered syllable of Infernal, and suddenly, his silhouette shimmers. To the advancing swarm, he appears to be a towering, multi-limbed nightmare, a creature of smoke and teeth. The leading wave of skittering shadows screeches, colliding into one another as they recoil from the sudden psychic blast of terror.

Skink
A masterpiece. My ancestors would weep at such a display of raw, infernal potency.
The swarm hesitates, a sea of glowing eyes blinking in confusion as they crawl over the discarded debris of the pit. The path forward is briefly clear, though the illusion flickers like a dying torch.

Merrick
What was that? Move, you fool! Don't just stand there basking in your own stink!

The Stranger
He truly is a conduit for something primal... or he is the most convincing madman I have ever encountered.
“*Runs away!* *Remember this story for later* (Obviously he will embellish)”
FAILURE (Great Agility, rolled -3)

As Skink turns to dash, his foot catches on a slick, moss-covered pipe. He lunges forward, arms windmilling, and lands face-first in the muck. The illusion of the towering demon shudders violently, fading into wisps of pathetic gray smoke before vanishing entirely. The swarm, seeing the goblin sprawl into the filth, lets out a collective, chittering hiss of realization.

Skink
Tactical retreat failed. Now, it is time for a tactical prone combat maneuver. Yes, this was all planned.

Merrick
You pathetic worm! You tripped over your own feet while the monsters were actually backing off!

The Stranger
The illusion is gone. Stand up, or we shall all be digested before the hour is out.
The swarm surges forward, a sea of chittering mandibles and pale limbs flooding over the broken edge of the pit. They are feet away from Skink, their hunger palpable in the stagnant air.
“(NO! AND I LOOKED SO COOL TOO!)”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Skink
That was a rhythmic interpretative dance, not a trip. And now, the grand finale.
With a fluid, cat-like twist, Skink springs from his prone position, his boots finding purchase on the slick stone. He performs a spinning back-flip over the lead wave of chittering horrors, his tattered robes swirling like a dark cape. He lands perfectly between Merrick and the approaching swarm, his jagged blade held in a flamboyant, theatrical pose.

Skink
Behold, commoners! My agility is as peerless as my lineage. Watch how a true descendant of the abyss handles mere pests!

Merrick
You are an absolute madman, goblin! Stop posing and keep moving before they reach us!

The Stranger
The tunnel narrows ahead. If you survive this, move!
The creatures hiss, momentarily stunned by the goblin's sudden, acrobatic defiance. The swarm crests over the rubble like a dark, shifting wave, their pale limbs raking the stone walls.
“*The Goblin followers show up, for better or for worse*”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Skink lets out a high-pitched, echoing whistle, expecting his loyal goblin cronies to burst from the drainage pipes to swarm to his aid. Silence answers him, save for the rhythmic dripping of foul water. Suddenly, a single, terrified goblin stumbles out of a side-vent, trips over his own oversized loincloth, and crashes headlong into Skink, knocking him directly into the path of the oncoming swarm.

Skink
That was... a tactical repositioning. Yes. The followers are coming! Eventually.

Merrick
You pathetic fool! You called for help and managed to summon nothing but a distraction for the monsters to feast on first!

The Stranger
The path behind us is blocked by your friend. Move or die, goblin.
The swarm surges forward, a sea of glowing, hungry eyes now mere feet away. The bumbling goblin scrambles to his feet, shielding his eyes as the chittering mass prepares to overwhelm the group.
“*False courage/unearned confidence*”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Skink
Ha! The swarm trembles! They sense the blood of the Imp, the fire of the abyss, the sheer majesty of a true lover of life!
Skink stands perfectly still, his eyes wide and blazing with a manic, unearned, and absolutely legendary confidence. He puffs out his small, mud-streaked chest and lets out a guttural, terrifying roar that echoes far louder than his small frame should permit. The swarm of pale, chittering creatures skitters to a sudden, shrieking halt, their glowing eyes pulsating in confusion as they recoil from the goblin's sheer, radiating audacity.

Merrick
What… is he doing?

The Stranger
Stop gaping, Merrick. The monster has blinked. Move now!
The creatures press against the tunnel walls, cowed by Skink’s inexplicable bravado, providing a narrow window of opportunity to sprint past the pit’s edge toward the shifting shadows of the exit.
