The Gilded Spur Inn swallows them in lamp-glow and smoke, a low room of creaking beams and wet cloaks. Jax comes in with the Auctioneer and the Clerk at his shoulder, and the old setup snaps into place again, coin bag, boots, and all.

At the nearest table, the Auctioneer is no longer arranging Jax's things like a servant. They are sorting them like gear for a flight, stacking boots by size, tugging the coin bag close, eyes flicking to the back door between every movement.

The Clerk

The Clerk

There it is. They mean to run first.

The Clerk does not move to stop them. They only watch, cold and still, while the Auctioneer slides one of Jax's worn pairs under a bench and palms a wrapped bundle near their own coat.

That small theft answers the earlier question at last. The compliance was never obedience, only purchase, and the bribe is already turning into an exit.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Keep your voice down. I am getting us both out.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Both of us? That is generous of you.

The innkeeper lingers by the counter, pretending not to listen. Outside, rain taps the shutters. Inside, the Clerk tips their gaze to Jax, waiting to see whether he notices the shape of the betrayal before the next drink is poured.

Jax lets the room breathe for a heartbeat, then offers the kind of wealth that ends arguments. The coin bag opens, and a fresh fortune settles the table in glittering weight.

Jax

Jax

Take another five hundred thousand. You both are loyal to me forever more. Just put the boots in the magical bag.

The Auctioneer’s hands stop their furtive packing. The Clerk straightens at once, edging closer to Jax’s side of the table, ready to catch any sudden move.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Forever is a strong word. But for that price, I can manage sincerity.

The Clerk

The Clerk

And I can manage discretion, if the boots go where they belong.

The Auctioneer gathers the stolen pairs with careful, almost reverent hands and folds them into the waiting magical bag. The Clerk stays half a step off to the side, watching the doorway, then Jax, as if measuring whether devotion is safer than flight.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

There. Returned, counted, and hidden. You have my word for tonight.

The Clerk gives a small, guarded nod, and the table loses its tension. For the moment, the bribe lands cleanly, and the three of them sit in the dim common room with rain ticking softly against the shutters.
