Dusk follows Jax into a new place, a roofless watchroom high in the hill castle. Ivy claws the broken stone, and cold moonlight spills across a cracked flag floor. The Auctioneer and the Clerk climb in through the archway, burdened with burlap-wrapped bundles that clatter with boots and iron heels.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

As ordered. Every pair we can take, from the sleeping men, from the auction shelves, from the sheds beyond town.

The Clerk lowers the first bundle at Jax’s feet and begins untying it with careful, practiced hands. Worn leather, polished buckles, and mud-caked soles spill into the moonlight in neat rows.

The Clerk

The Clerk

We keep the tale clean. No names, no fuss, just boots moving where they’re wanted.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

If I keep feeding him pairs, I keep breathing.

A second bundle lands beside the first. The heap of footwear grows between Jax and his suppliers, a small conquered field of leather and iron. Beyond the western arch, the hill wind threads through the ruin and rattles the loose ivy.

Then the Clerk pauses, holding up one narrow boot with a silver stitch at the heel. Something inside it gives a faint, dry click, like a hidden clasp waiting for a touch.

Jax closes his hand over the hidden clasp. The narrow boot gives once, then slips away into his magical inventory with the rest of the cache.

Coins answer in a soft, impossible rush. Nine hundred million pour out of the endless bag in a heavy spill of wealth across the flagstones.

The Clerk

The Clerk

That is enough. More than enough.

The Clerk hurriedly gathers the first stacks, eyes on the doorway and then back to the boot pile, as if counting shadows with the payment.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Keep your voice down. Keep it hidden.

The Auctioneer snatches up the nearest bundles, shoulders tight, glancing over the archway again and again toward the dark outside.

For one hard beat, his silence feels rehearsed. Then his stare lingers on the ruin’s entrance, and the nervousness in him sharpens into the shape of a tail.

Jax tilts the request at both servants with calm certainty. The Clerk pauses with a stack of coins in hand, then reaches for the brown boots first, while the Auctioneer hesitates one sharp breath before obeying.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Of course. Right here.

The Clerk kneels by Jax’s lap and sets a pair close against his leg, careful not to spill the coins. The Auctioneer follows with the other pair, his fingers stiff, his eyes still flicking toward the archway as he lowers them.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

As you wish. I am keeping it quiet.

Jax

Jax

The boots are older than they look.

The Clerk smooths a hand over one bulbous toe, then glances up with a strained, almost grateful look. The Auctioneer swallows, and the sudden compliance in him does not leave, it settles deeper.

The Clerk

The Clerk

That hidden clasp was not meant for any normal buyer.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

No. It was meant to be noticed by someone else first.

For a moment, the room is only coin glint, worn leather, and the two of them standing close where Jax can hear the truth in their voices. Then the Auctioneer’s gaze jumps again to the entrance, and this time he goes pale.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Someone has seen the trail. I do not know if they followed it here.

Jax settles lower on the coin-scattered stone and makes the request plain. The Auctioneer’s shoulders twitch, then he looks down, kneels, and starts unlacing Jax’s worn boots with careful, shaking hands.

The Clerk

The Clerk

You want it done properly. Then let it be proper.

The Clerk crouches beside Jax, palms steady now, and works the second boot free while the Auctioneer slides the first off Jax’s foot. The older man’s breathing is shallow, but his hands do not falter.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

If this is the shape of obedience, then I have already chosen the safer chain.

Bare booted feet are guided onto Jax’s lap, one pair, then the other, the leather soles resting there like surrendered tokens. The Clerk gives a tight little nod, as if the ritual of it matters.

The Clerk

The Clerk

There. Comfortable enough for inspection, and quiet enough for secrecy.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

It stayed hidden. No one followed us to the ruin. Only fear did.

The words hang between them, softer now, as coinlight flickers over old leather and the dark, sleeping shape of Jax’s magic bag. The Auctioneer keeps his eyes lowered, waiting to see whether Jax believes him.

Jax names the need plainly, and the two men move at once. The Clerk takes both worn boots together, while the Auctioneer lifts his hands back as if to prove he is not reaching for anything else.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Like this, then. In my hands, and nowhere else.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

He asks for it cleanly. I will not make a muddle of it.

The Clerk turns the boots heel to toe, checks the seams, then cradles them against his chest. The Auctioneer watches the castle mouth for one nervous breath, but nothing comes, and his shoulders loosen.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

No tail. No witness. The bargain is still hidden.

He lets out a thin, embarrassed laugh and finally looks at Jax instead of the dark archways.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

You keep asking for the work to be done properly. That is... easier than I expected.

The Clerk

The Clerk

And safer than hiding it badly.

Jax keeps his boots off his feet and lets the request hang there like a coin on a string. The Clerk shifts first, then the Auctioneer, both watching his face for the shape of the joke that never comes.

Jax

Jax

Hold them. Both of you. Right now.

The Clerk answers with an easy, almost careful compliance, taking one boot in each hand and setting them together like precious proof. The Auctioneer leans in after him, hands hovering, then closes his fingers around the leather with visible relief.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Gladly. They have a better chance of staying quiet with us than on the floor.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Clean hands, clean bargain. I can manage that much.

Jax

Jax

They are both gay, and both trying very hard to be precise about it.

The Clerk glances sideways at Jax's bare feet, then back to the boots, a small smile tugging at his mouth. The Auctioneer gives a short, nervous exhale that turns into a warmer one when the room stays silent around them.

The Clerk

The Clerk

You do make an unusual kind of customer, Jax.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Unusual, yes. But not careless. That is worth something.
