The auction hall swelters under hanging lamps and breathless voices. Leather, sweat, and old straw hang heavy in the air.

Jax steps in among packed rows of bidders, his worn boots scraping the flagstones. Ahead, a mud-caked pair of ancient boots sits on a velvet stand.

Prices jump fast. A ringed woman in green snaps a bid. A broad-shouldered man in a soot-dark coat counters at once.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Eight thousand. Do I hear nine?

The crowd leans in. Every face glistens with want, or fear, or both. The old boots look untouched by the heat, as if they are waiting for one last owner.

Jax

Jax

Those are worth the room.

The Soot-Coat Man

The Soot-Coat Man

Nine thousand. And I take them now, if no one here has the spine.

The auctioneer hovers with the gavel raised. Several bidders turn, measuring Jax, while the man in soot-dark coat stares straight at the stand, ready for the next challenge.

Jax raises the bid, and the hall seems to hold its breath around the number. A few paddles stop midair.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Fifty-five thousand... do I hear higher?

The Ringed Woman

The Ringed Woman

That price bites hard, but she keeps her eyes on the boots, not Jax.

The Soot-Coat Man

The Soot-Coat Man

He can throw coins like a lord. I still want them.

The auctioneer’s hand dips. Then the gavel cracks down.

A clerk hustles in with a receipt slate, and the velvet stand is rolled toward Jax through the gap in the benches.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Sold. To Jax.

The clerk lifts the mud-caked boots into Jax’s keeping, while the room murmurs at the cost he has just made plain.

The clerk turns the slate, and a fresh lot is revealed to the room. Jax’s eye catches another pair, old creased pull-on boots with bulbous toes, dark leather dulled by use.

A murmur runs through the benches as the auctioneer lifts a hand for silence.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Next lot, adventurer’s boots, well-worn and sturdy. Who opens at two hundred?

Jax

Jax

Two hundred.

Jax studies the pair, reading the seams, the creases, the weight of them in the light.

The Soot-Coat Man

The Soot-Coat Man

Those look worth more than that.

The Ringed Woman

The Ringed Woman

If they’re as old as they seem, they will not stay cheap for long.

Jax raises the bid, calm and absolute. The hall hears the number and goes still for a breath.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Two hundred thousand... noted. Do I have a higher offer?

The Soot-Coat Man

The Soot-Coat Man

That is a showpiece price, not a boot price.

The Ringed Woman

The Ringed Woman

He means it, though. Look at his hands.

The auctioneer’s mouth tightens. The boots sit untouched on the stand, but the room has turned cautious around them.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

At that sum, I must ask for assurance of payment before I close.

A clerk nudges forward a lacquered tray with a wax tablet and a stamped chit, the sort used for private verification. The path to the purchase is open, but only if Jax follows it now.

200,000 for them

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Jax draws out the verification chit and lets the clerk see the seal. The room answers with a rustle of breath as the number stands firm, undeniable.

The Auctioneer

The Auctioneer

Accepted. Two hundred thousand for the boots, pending stamp and count.

The clerk dips the wax tablet, then marks the chit with a hard, official thump. The boots are his by the hall’s law now, but the ink smells sharp enough to make every rival watch the tray instead of the stand.

The Soot-Coat Man

The Soot-Coat Man

He pays like a lord. That makes him dangerous.

The Ringed Woman

The Ringed Woman

Five minutes sooner, and I would have fought him for them.

A purse-clerk starts counting against Jax’s coin bag total while the auctioneer keeps one hand over the boots, not touching them yet. The hall is quieter now, but it is a different kind of quiet, waiting to see if the count holds.

The clerk turns the stamped chit toward Jax, then pauses with the boots still on the stand, asking for the final handover.
