A Moment of Respite

The cargo bay settles into a low metal rumble. Red strip lights wash over scuffed bulkheads, the sealed rear hatch, and the damage along the Vulture's tail.

Taled

Taled

What do you think we are actually running from, Kay?

Taled stays by the hatch, broad shoulders easing down at last. His black tattoos pulse faintly under the dim light, and the silence feels almost earned.

Kay

Kay

The whole city has been chasing us since the prison bay.

Yma

Yma

If this thing keeps shaking like that, I want answers after we land. Preferably before it falls apart.

Ocram

Ocram

We are alive. For now, that is the important part.

Somewhere forward, the engines hold steady. The crew has room to breathe, and for the first time in hours, nobody reaches for a weapon.

✓ Quest Accepted

Confront Taled about his agenda

Taled: I have a gambling debt to the Yakuza; I owe them a huge pile of cash. That’s why they came to get me in prison—to rip out the only valuable thing I have: my cybernetic implants.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +2)

Kay

Kay

I owe the Yakuza money. A lot. They came for me in the prison bay because my cybernetics are worth more than my life.

The words land hard in the cargo bay. Kay keeps his gaze level, but the confession costs him enough that the engine hum seems louder for a second.

Taled

Taled

That is why they wanted you alive.

Taled

Taled

You were carrying that the whole time? On me, in the bay, in the tunnels?

Ocram glances back from the pilot passage, then says nothing, letting the silence do the pressure work.

Yma

Yma

Great. So the trace, the bounty, and the prison hit are all wrapped around one ugly little debt.

Taled

Taled

Then tell me straight, Kay, are they chasing you, or are they chasing what is in your skull?

Quest Complete

Confront Taled about his agenda

Kay: A bit of both. My cybernetic implants let me cheat at games—see through the cards, rig the dice in my favor. You get the picture? Well, I won big. Too big. And now that they know I cheated, it's time to pay up. They came to finish you off in prison, Taled—just to intimidate me. But I wasn't about to let that happen! So the team and I came to bust you out... and you know the rest of the story.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

A Moment of Respite
Kay

Kay

A bit of both. I rigged the odds, won too big, and the Yakuza wanted their money back. They came at the prison to scare me into paying.

The cargo bay stays steady around them, but the confession strips some of the heat from the air. Red light crawls over the crates and Taled's face.

Kay

Kay

The implants make it easy to cheat, easy enough to make a problem nobody forgets. That debt was mine.

Kay keeps his voice even. Ocram watches from the pilot passage, and Yma's hands still on the console for just a beat.

Kay

Kay

Taled, they were using you. The prison hit was supposed to rattle me, not let me walk away.

Taled

Taled

So you dragged us into a war because you wanted to settle a score alone.

Kay

Kay

No. I pulled you out because I wasn't letting them finish the job on you in front of me.

Yma

Yma

Great. So it's not random bad luck, it's a debt with teeth.

Taled

Taled

...And now I know exactly how much of this was about Kay, and how much was about the crew.

Kay: I apologize, brothers—I shouldn't have dragged you into my problems. But I never could have made it on my own. Without you, I was a dead man!

Kay

Kay

I shouldn't have dragged you into my mess. I never would have made it alone. Without you, I would be dead.

The words land cleanly in the humming bay. Red light slides over Kay's scars, then across Taled as he stops pretending the hatch matters more than the conversation.

Taled

Taled

You say it like that fixes the part where you kept it from us.

Yma looks down at the console, then back up, her skepticism easing by a fraction. Ocram stays quiet, but his shoulders loosen in the pilot passage.

Taled

Taled

...Still. You say you were alone, but you are standing here. So maybe that is the truth that matters.

Kay

Kay

It is. I need the crew alive more than I need to pretend I can handle everything myself.

Taled

Taled

Good. Because from here on out, if you are carrying a debt, you carry it with us watching your back.

Taled steps closer, not smiling, but no longer braced to strike. The cargo bay holds on, engine-thrum steady, while the argument gives way to something rougher and more usable.

Taled holds out his hand to Kay. The two men perform their secret handshake, then share a hug.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

A Moment of Respite

Taled holds his hand out without a word, palm open in the red wash. Kay takes it, and the old street-cant handshake clicks back into place, fast and exact.

Their grip tightens, forearms bump, shoulders angle in. It is clumsy for half a second, then it lands.

Taled

Taled

Still there. Good.

Kay pulls him in, and Taled folds into the hug hard enough to knock the breath out of both of them.

A loose panel in the tail section rattles from the impact. Somewhere near the pilot passage, Ocram keeps silent and lets them have it.

Taled

Taled

You owe me less now.

When they separate, Taled is smiling a little, but one corner of Kay's knuckles is split from the grip. The hug leaves a smudge of grease on his vest, and the bay keeps humming like it heard everything.
