Fresh drag marks climb from the ford into the wooded rise. Rain shakes loose gray ash from the abandoned charcoal path, spotting the reeds and blackened trunks.

Ilyan Voss

Ilyan Voss

There. Their footprints vanish between those trees, but they were hurried. One stumbled near the split ash stump.

Ilyan remains seated against the willow root, soaked and breathing hard, while Sava kneels beside him and checks the torn courier satchel. The sealed green-wax tube rests with Raedwulf.

Sava

Sava

The thieves are close. I will keep the courier here and watch the ford. Follow the signs only as far as the rise allows.

Beyond the charcoal path, a bent reed slowly springs upright. Bootprints cross the ash, three sets by their spacing, with one trail dragging something narrow toward thicker woodland.

Ilyan Voss

The document case made that mark. They feared pursuit, so they left the main track and cut toward the old kiln hollow.

Sava

Sava

Choose your approach, Raedwulf. I will not leave him exposed, but I can raise the horn if the road turns dangerous.

Raedwulf follows the three footprints into the ash, moving low and silent with his bow drawn. Sava and Ilyan remain behind at the ford, hidden by reeds and rain.

The trail bends toward the split ash stump, but the soaked ground gives way beneath his leading foot. A crust of charcoal collapses, sending him sliding against the stump as ash scatters downslope.

Raedwulf

Raedwulf

The kiln hollow lies below, but the main path will not hold my weight.

His fall stops short of the hollow, yet the slide exposes a narrow drainage cleft beneath tangled roots. Through it, Raedwulf glimpses three cloaked figures, three adult human men in charcoal cloaks, with their faces shadowed by hoods beside the old kiln, their stolen case open.

Ilyan Voss

The case is open? Then they may be searching for the treaty seal, not fleeing with it.

One thief thrusts papers into the case while another tests the kiln’s blackened doorway. The unstable slope now blocks a direct approach, but the root-lined cleft offers concealed access beneath the hollow.

Sava

Sava

Raedwulf, if you can hear me, the cleft may bring you below them. Do not cross the ash slope again.

Raedwulf follows the three footprints through the drainage cleft, bow drawn and body low. Root tangles conceal his passage as he reaches the old kiln hollow unseen.

From beneath the kiln’s broken lip, he sees the stolen document case open between the three charcoal-cloaked men. Treaty papers lie scattered beside it, and the green-wax seal is absent.

first thief

The seal is not here. Search the courier’s satchel again before we leave.

Their words reveal the thieves’ mistake: they do not know the treaty seal survived at the ford. One man holds a folded route map showing a hidden path around the kiln.

second thief

The western track is watched. We use the ash-cut instead, then cross below the ford.

Raedwulf now occupies the hollow’s concealed lower edge with a clear view of all three men, the open case, and their unguarded escape route. Rain muffles every breath.

Sava

Sava

I see you, Raedwulf. Hold your position. The ford remains secure, and the courier is safe while you choose your moment.

Raedwulf settles deeper beneath the kiln lip, bow drawn and arrow nocked. Rain taps the broken stones while the three thieves remain unaware of his position.

first thief

The courier must have hidden the seal before we reached him. Search every fold, then burn the useless papers.

The first thief kneels over the scattered documents. The second guards the ash-cut, while the third keeps one hand on the open case and watches the darkening path.

third thief

third thief

No burning. The treaty council may pay for these names, and the route map leads beneath the ford. We take everything.

Their voices carry through the hollow. Raedwulf hears the scrape of parchment, the creak of leather, and distant water swelling around the ford.

second thief

If the seal is missing, we return to the courier. He cannot have passed it to anyone in this rain.

Sava

Sava

I hear them moving toward the ford. Hold your ground, Raedwulf. I will keep the courier hidden and watch the road.

Raedwulf

Raedwulf

Help me! Please! You must help me!

Raedwulf shifts into the ash beside the kiln path, bow kept ready but concealed, and presents himself as injured by some unseen animal. His cry carries through the rain toward the returning thieves.

second thief

second thief

There! Someone is hurt. Hold the ash-cut and see whether he knows where the courier went.

The three thieves turn from the ford. One closes the document case, while the other two advance through the charcoal ash, their attention fixed on Raedwulf’s false distress.

first thief

first thief

Stay where you are. What attacked you, and which way did the courier flee?

Raedwulf remains low and listens beneath the rain. Their boots stop within the hollow, close enough for him to hear leather creak and parchment shift inside the stolen case.

third thief

third thief

Search him after we question him. If he saw the courier, he may know where the green seal was hidden.

SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Raedwulf

Raedwulf

Help me! A Saberdon cat is in the forest. It killed two of my party, and I barely escaped. I can hear it pursuing me!

Raedwulf keeps his bow concealed but ready, crouched in the ash as rain and controlled panic sell the lie. A sharp charcoal edge cuts his palm, leaving a thin sting and dark smear.

first thief

first thief

A Saberdon cat? Then the courier may already be dead. Stay still, stranger. Where did you hear it?

The three thieves halt within the hollow. Raedwulf lowers his gaze like a frightened survivor while listening to their boots, the case clasp, and parchment shifting in the rain.

second thief

second thief

We cannot linger. If the beast follows him, it may drive him toward the kiln. Search his clothes, then take the case and leave.

third thief

third thief

No. Let him point out the path he used. If the cat killed his companions, the bodies may mark a safer route to the ford.

Their suspicion bends into practical fear. The stolen case remains between them, the escape route stays guarded, and Raedwulf has drawn their attention close enough to choose his next move.

FAILURE (Great Diplomacy, rolled -4)

The lie carries through the hollow, but the thieves do not retreat. The first thief advances with a short blade lowered, while the others keep the document case between them.

first thief

first thief

Point to the path, stranger. Slowly. If you are lying, the cat will be the least of your troubles.

Raedwulf keeps his bow concealed and listens. His charcoal-smeared palm and torn clothing suggest a struggle, yet no claw marks or bloodied tracks support the tale.

third thief

third thief

There are no bodies, no deep tracks, and no beast cry. He came from the kiln path, not the forest.

The second thief circles toward the drainage cleft, cutting off the concealed route back to the rise. The first thief reaches for Raedwulf’s shoulder, while the case remains briefly unattended.

second thief

second thief

He is bait. Search him, then bind his hands. If his companions live, they will draw us toward the courier and the seal.

The deception has failed forward: the thieves believe Raedwulf is connected to the courier, and their tightening formation leaves him exposed but gives him a fleeting view of the open case.

Raedwulf

Raedwulf keeps his body low in the ash, bow drawn and ready beneath his torn cloak. He listens for every shift of leather while maintaining the appearance of an injured survivor.

first thief

first thief

A saberdon cat? Then the beast may be close. Lower your weapon, stranger. We will get you behind the kiln.

The first thief’s certainty spreads through the others. Their formation loosens, and the second man glances toward the dark trees instead of searching Raedwulf for deception.

third thief

third thief

I heard something moving beyond the rise. Leave the courier’s trail. If that cat follows him, it may reach us next.

second thief

second thief

Take the case and move. Stranger, point toward the safest path. We will keep the beast from you until you reach the road.

The thieves accept the illusion. Their attention turns toward the forest and the escape route, leaving the stolen case exposed while Raedwulf remains concealed, armed, and listening.

Director's note

While the thieves backs are turned, I lounge towards the the closest thief. Dragger drawn, pointed towards he's neck.

“"The beast was right in front of you the whole time." I say a chilling calm voice. "Let be diplomatic and talk."”

While the thieves’ backs turn toward the trees, Raedwulf glides across the ash. His drawn bow remains ready as his dagger settles beneath the closest thief’s jaw.

Raedwulf

Raedwulf

The beast was right in front of you the whole time. Let us be diplomatic and talk.

The first thief freezes. Raedwulf’s torn cloak, charcoal-smeared palm, and controlled breathing resolve into the very predator they feared, while the other two stop beside the stolen case.

first thief

first thief

You are the beast? Lower that blade, and we can speak without bloodshed.

second thief

He has the advantage. Do not reach for the case or your weapons.

The third thief slowly raises both hands. The document case remains on the ash between them, open and within Raedwulf’s reach, while rain darkens the stolen papers.

Diplomacy, then. We will answer questions, and you will tell us what price buys our safe departure.
