The healer remains with the Lycanrian Minor in the warm room, while Raedwulf, Sava, Alyndra, and Anewyn step into Hearthhollow’s cold orchard. Doubled wardfires paint the snow blue and gold.
Raedwulf tells Anewyn about the manor fire, hidden roads, fugitives, treaty hearings, thieves, noble claims, and the long work of building Hearthhollow into a refuge.
Anewyn walks close at his side, wearing a playful, curious smile and interrupting with eager questions. Alyndra watches with relaxed warmth as Raedwulf’s stories turn old danger into shared family history.

Raedwulf
The road was hard, but every danger taught me whom to protect. That is how we reached this place and made it a home.
Raedwulf smiles at Anewyn, then turns toward Sava. His relaxed manner tightens into focused intensity as they follow the black thorn trail between the orchard trees.

Sava
The next phase of the Wardbound Circle is the relay guard. We will practice passing protection between companions without abandoning the center.

Anewyn
Wait. Did you hear that? Something is scraping behind that tree, near the thorn trail.
✓ Quest Accepted
Identify what is scraping behind the orchard tree
“Is the scraping coming from the same direction as the pursuer's trail?”
YES (Likely, rolled 49)

The scraping comes again from beyond the same orchard tree, aligned with the deeper trail where the pursuer’s prints vanish toward the eastern ward.

Anewyn
It is coming from the trail. That means whoever followed her may still be close, doesn’t it?
Alyndra’s relaxed warmth fades into alert stillness. She draws Anewyn nearer without taking her eyes from the dark branches.

Alyndra
Then the wolfdog was not the end of the pursuit. Someone reached Hearthhollow behind her, or has been waiting just beyond the ward.
Sava studies the overlapping tracks and the black thorn sealed in the healer’s vial. The scraping stops, leaving only wind and the low murmur of wardfires.

Sava
The direction confirms the trail. The pursuer came from the eastern breach, and may still be testing our boundary. We proceed as a household, not as scattered targets.
The nearest ward-stone brightens toward the trees, revealing fresh disturbances in the frost but no visible figure. Hearthhollow’s watchfires answer with a steady blue glow.
“Raedwulf tell Alyndra and Anewyn to return to the dealer's home and remain there, till he and Sava return. Raedwulf and Sava follow the trail back to its source”
SUCCESS (Superb Survival, rolled +0)

Raedwulf
Alyndra, take Anewyn back to the healer’s home and remain there until Sava and I return. Keep the door barred.

Alyndra
Understood. Anewyn stays with me, and we will not leave until you return. Come, child.

Anewyn
But be careful, Cousin. Find whoever chased her, then come back and tell me everything.
Alyndra guides Anewyn toward the healer’s warm room, glancing back once with steady trust. Sava waits until the door closes, then follows Raedwulf into the orchard.

Sava
Now we follow the marks quietly. The household is sheltered, the watch is raised, and the trail belongs to us.
Raedwulf and Sava trace the deeper prints through frost and blue wardlight. They pass the eastern stones and find the source beyond the breach: a concealed hollow with snapped brambles, discarded cord, and fresh boot impressions leading outward.

Sava
Here. The pursuer waited beyond Hearthhollow, drove the Lycanrian through the breach, and withdrew when the ward awakened. We have the source and a clear direction.

Identify what is scraping behind the orchard tree
Director's note
I examine the cord and boot impressions

Raedwulf crouches beside the concealed hollow, examining the discarded cord without disturbing its knots. The fibers are coarse, weather-darkened, and still carry the scent of ashwood sap.
He studies the boot impressions next. One traveler wore a square-heeled boot with a split sole; the other prints are lighter, narrow, and repeatedly overlap the Lycanrian’s trail.

Sava
Two pursuers, then. One drove her through the breach, while the second waited beyond it. That is coordination, not a chance hunt.
Sava kneels opposite him, keeping her hands clear of the marks. Beyond the ward, the tracks turn east toward a ravine where frost lies unbroken beneath the trees.

Sava
The relay guard must prepare us for this kind of pressure. One defender follows the threat, while another keeps the protected person moving toward safety.
A faint scrape sounds behind an orchard tree within the ward. Sava rises silently, and the nearest blue stone brightens toward the noise as fresh frost slides from a hidden branch.

Sava
Stay ready. If the pursuers left a watcher behind, it may know the household is divided. We take it alive if it yields to lawful command.
✓ Quest Accepted
Bring the watcher into lawful custody
“I use my sense of smell to determine the watchers position. I move Stealthy through the snow”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Raedwulf lowers himself into the frost and draws a slow breath. Ashwood sap, cold iron, damp wool, and a faint resinous scent reveal the watcher’s position.
He moves silently through the snow, placing each clawed foot in the shadow of older prints. The ward-stone’s glow passes over him without catching his outline.
The scent leads behind a split-trunk orchard tree, where a crouched figure waits within the branches, facing the healer’s house rather than the breach.

Sava
There. Twelve paces ahead, behind the split trunk. I will cover the path while you close the distance.
Raedwulf slips nearer through the blue-lit snow. The watcher, a lean young adult human man in an ash-dark cloak, his face hidden among the branches’s narrow boots and ash-dark cloak become visible, along with a cord looped around one wrist.

Sava
You are inside Hearthhollow’s ward and under lawful notice. Lower your hands, step into the light, and answer for your presence.
The watcher freezes, clearly aware that concealment has failed. Slowly, the figure rises from behind the tree with empty hands held where both defenders can see them.
Director's note
I order the watcher to surrender peacefully
Director's notewhole tale
But the watcher responds back at Raedwulf and Sava
“"Look look... you got the man. I'm just the lookout. I have a perfect legal permit to be here."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Raedwulf
Look, look... you caught me. I am only the lookout, and I have a perfectly legal permit to be here.
The watcher lowers his hands another inch and turns enough for moonlight to catch his wary face. His claim is heard, but the words sharpen Sava’s suspicion rather than easing it.

Neris
You heard him. I am no hunter. The permit is lawful, and I was watching the breach, not the healer’s house.
Raedwulf examines the cord and boot impressions without disturbing them. The coarse loop matches restraint work, while the split-heeled boot marks place the watcher beside the pursuit trail.

Raedwulf
Lower your hands fully, step into the wardlight, and surrender peacefully. We will examine your permit under Hearthhollow’s law.

Neris
Peacefully, then. I surrender, but the permit is real. Take it from my inner cloak, and do not mistake caution for guilt.
He steps into the blue light and slowly removes a sealed leather folio, extending it between two fingers. Sava accepts it without opening, while the ward-stone records the surrender.
