The hidden compartment sighs open in the central dais. Moon-bleached silk spills within, stacked in careful rolls, each one stitched with star-charts that drink the chamber’s pale light.

As the mechanism turns, the charts flare. Their constellations do not match the prophecy Eladrin has been following. Instead, they line up with the bright seam split across the star-map above, as if the observatory is trying to force a new answer into place.

No. That pattern again... it is not the fire I remember.

The Stranger takes one slow step back, then freezes, his gaze flicking from the silk to Eladrin, as though waiting to see whether the revelation becomes a verdict or a blade.

Kaelith

If those charts are right, then the future I led us to is already breaking.

The seam of light widens over the dais. For one stark moment, the room shows two paths at once, one that repeats the old catastrophe, and one that bends away from it. The choice is not hidden anymore. It is in the open, waiting for Eladrin to act.

I reach into the dais to unfurl the silk charts and trace the new path and try to use my divination.

Eladrin draws the nearest silk roll free. It whispers over the stone, cold as river mist, and his staff tip catches the edge before it can slip back into the compartment.

The stitchwork is older than the projection.

He unfurls the chart across the dais. The seam of light runs through it, but the symbols do not break, they reroute, threading into a second pattern hidden beneath the first.

Divination answers at once, sharp and costly. A wash of silver needles behind his eyes, then a clear path through the chart, not to the fire, but to the hand that first taught the observatory how to lie.

Kaelith

Kaelith

That is not a blessing. It is a warning.

The Stranger steps in, stopping short as the chart brightens under Eladrin's touch. One corner of the silk chars black from the spell, and the scent of singed thread drifts up between them.

If you see it clearly, then the mechanism is not merely showing us futures. It is choosing which one survives.
