The nearest branch widens into a recessed alcove, its stone floor dry beneath an overhang of cedar ribs. Maelin guides Aeru inside while the three blue-lit paths remain visible beyond.
Maelin Veyr
Your binding has loosened. Let me replace it before the wound worsens. Shelter is brief, but it is shelter.
Maelin kneels beside her travel satchel and draws out clean linen. Water taps steadily in the corridor, each drop echoing toward the unseen depths.
Aeru Kensae
The footprints pass all three branches, but only one bears fresh water beside the dust.
Maelin Veyr
My message came from the western road wardens. Travelers vanish near these stones, and those who return speak of a road beneath the road.
Maelin Veyr
The footprints mattered because they belonged to the last bearer of that message. I followed them here, hoping to learn whether he found the Kensae seal or woke it.
Maelin Veyr
I fear the road does not seek merely an heir. It may demand a name, a bloodline, or a sword willing to finish what its first keeper began. I cannot promise what it will take from you.

Uncover the obligation hidden in the wardens' message
“"I come to claim what is my right by birth. The secrets hidden are mine to claim and master."”

Aeru Kensae
I come to claim what is my right by birth. The secrets hidden are mine to claim and master.
Aeru’s words settle into the cedar-ribbed alcove. The three blue paths flare, then fold into one luminous road beneath his feet, its sigils bearing the Kensae name.
Maelin Veyr
Then claim them with open eyes. Birth may unlock the road, but mastery will answer only to the hand that survives its truth.
The fresh footprints blaze silver. Water lifts from the corridor stones and hangs in shining threads, revealing a hidden stair descending through the wall of the alcove.
As Aeru reaches the first step, the Kensae sigil unfolds across his bound arm without touching the linen. Ancient knowledge enters the ward: the road was built to gather lost paths, and its first keeper sealed a living secret below.
Maelin Veyr
You have it now, Aeru Kensae. The road recognizes you as keeper, not merely heir. Whatever waits below is yours to command or change.
The concealed stair opens fully, blue fire kindling along its edges. Beneath the last step, a vast chamber answers with the low resonance of a drawn sword.
