Aeru stands within the narrow gap, katana still drawn, blood marking his sleeve. The wounded traveler limps across the threshold beside him as the wolves remain among the trees.

Blue sigils brighten one by one along the standing stones. Their cold radiance gathers beneath the fallen tree, revealing letters cut deep into the ancient rock.

The inscription emerges in a language Aeru recognizes from old warding lore: “Where fang refuses, the sealed road opens. Where steel enters, the sleeping name remembers.”

Beyond the passage, the scar-eared wolf watches from between black trunks. It lowers its head toward the glowing threshold, but the blue light holds the pack back.

Aeru lowers his katana and begins the remembered kata within the blue-lit gap. Each cut follows the old sequence, measured against breath, stone, and silence.

The final turn demands a sharper lunge than memory promised. Aeru completes it, but the motion pulls his grazed arm open; fresh blood runs beneath his sleeve.

His blade settles at guard. The stones answer with a deep chime, and the inscription’s blue lines rearrange into a complete pattern around the passage.

The chime carries into the pines. The remaining wolves lift their heads, and the scar-eared leader fixes on Aeru with renewed, wary attention.

The completed kata leaves the ward awake and legible, its blue geometry pointing beyond the threshold toward a concealed route beneath the road.

The wounded traveler studies Aeru’s bloodied sleeve, then tears a long strip from the lower edge of her green cloak. The fabric joins the road’s growing litter of damage.

She loops the cloth firmly above the graze, folds a clean section over it, and knots it with practiced fingers. The pressure slows the bleeding, though Aeru’s sleeve is ruined.

The blue geometry steadies around them. Beneath the fallen tree, a seam of darkness opens in the earth, revealing worn steps descending beneath the road.

Aeru steps onto the worn stairway, katana lowered but ready. The wounded traveler follows close behind as the blue sigils cast their cold light down into the earth.

The descent opens into a buried passage beneath the road. Roots thread the ceiling, and ancient dust lies undisturbed except for a single line of fresh footprints.

Aeru follows the footprints past collapsed alcoves and pillars carved like kneeling swordsmen. At the passage’s end, his blade catches a hair-thin blue line across a sealed wall.

When Aeru brings the katana near, the wall unfolds inward without a sound. Beyond it rests a narrow chamber, its floor covered in silver dust and its walls painted with a forgotten map.

The map’s central sigil brightens, revealing the same sleeping pattern that answered Aeru’s kata. Beneath it, one word emerges in the old warding tongue: Kensae.
