Dust rolls through the narrow chamber. The buried exit looms ahead as a broken mound of stone and timber, sealing the tunnel shut.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

It is blocked... Shakazar, what do we do now?

Shakazar Frambling studies the collapse, then turns to the damp wall beside his camp spot. A seam of pale fungus threads through the copper stains, faint but living.

Shakazar Frambling

The spore growth is fresh.

He kneels, digging with careful fingers at the stone beside the growth. Behind the loosened grit, a colder draft slips through. A hidden crack, narrow but real.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

You can feel that? By the stones?

Shakazar lifts his staff toward the crack, and the spores on his kit stir in the moving air. If the fissure reaches beyond the rubble, it may lead to another exit, or to a deeper pocket rich with what he seeks.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

Then let me help. I want to see how you find it.

Find a way out of the mine

Shaka sits down and removes a tiny stone sculpture of a rat from his cloak. He whispers to it and places it on the ground in front of him

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled -3)

Shakazar Frambling sits beside the crack, settling his weight on the damp stone. He eases a tiny rat sculpture from his cloak, its edges dulled by travel and dust.

Shakazar Frambling

A good marker will answer the draft.

He whispers to the little figure and sets it on the ground before him. The carving gives a faint, living twitch, then turns its nose toward the fissure.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

It moved... truly moved.

The air in the chamber shifts. A thin trickle of grit stirs from the crack, and the rat sculpture begins to creep, little claws rasping softly over stone.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

If it leads somewhere, I will follow your sign, not the rubble.

But the whisper pulls a price, the copper dust around the wall settles in a sharp plume, and the mine answers with a dry, echoing tick from deeper inside.

Shaka instructs the rat to find an exit and return

Shakazar cups the rat sculpture in both hands and lets a thin thread of spellwork run through the little stone body. The carving shivers, then jerks toward the fissure with purpose.

Shakazar Frambling

Find the way out. Come back.

The rat slips into the crack, scraping dust loose as it goes. A dry ticking answers from within the wall, and the copper grit around Shakazar’s knees lifts in a brief, stinging puff.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

It listens to you like a trained beast. I had not thought stone could carry a will.

Moments later, the little figure pops back out, one forepaw lifted and its nose angled toward a narrow crawlspace just beyond the hidden fissure.

It has found a route deeper in the mine, and the answer comes with a price, the sculpture’s flank is chipped, dust coats Shakazar’s beard, and the tick from the dark repeats once more from beyond the wall.

Shaka leads the pilgrim along the route carefully

SUCCESS (Good Survival, rolled +1)

Shakazar lowers the rat sculpture into his palm, then rises and gestures for the pilgrim to follow the crawlspace it found. Dust sifts from his beard as he leads with his staff held low, testing each step before he trusts it.

The pilgrim shadows him closely, one hand brushing the stone for balance. Behind them, the camp spot and the blocked exit shrink into dimness as the mine narrows around their shoulders.

The path bends through a seam of pale fungus and loose grit, but the floor holds. The rat flits ahead, pausing where the air tastes colder, then darts on as if it has chosen the safest line by scent.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

You make danger look deliberate. How do you know which stone will give?

Shakazar angles his staff toward a darker throat in the rock, and the way opens into a slanted passage that would have hidden from anyone walking blind. The collapse is behind them now, replaced by a new route deeper into the mine.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

If this is the safer line, then I want to see what your magic notices next.

Shaka looks at the weary traveler and produces a flask filled with pure spring water blessed by a guardian of the forest named lalayla. It will heal wounds and restore energy

Shakazar stops in the slanted passage and draws out a small flask. Pale water glints inside it, brighter than the mine’s dim stone should allow.

Shakazar Frambling

The spring water still holds its blessing.

He offers the flask to the pilgrim, steady-handed, letting her choose the pace of the handoff.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

For me? After all that, you still share it?

She takes a careful sip, then another, and her shoulders loosen as color returns to her face. The cold draft in the passage seems less sharp around her.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

That is warm. Not hot, just... right. Like drinking from a clean stream after a hard road.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

Your forest guardians sound kinder than most things that answer in the dark. What did you call her, Lalayla?

My mentor, friend, and inspiration.

The words land plain and true, but the pilgrim hears the weight under them. She studies his face, then the blessed water, as if measuring how much of the story he leaves unsaid.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

Then she matters more than a guide from old stories. I can hear it in your voice.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

I thought all magic was meant to dazzle. Yours feels like care, and practice, and a lot of patience.

She turns the flask in both hands, smiling faintly. The slanted passage opens behind her into a darker bend, where the blessed damp keeps the air from turning icy.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

If Lalayla taught you this, I want to understand how she did it. Not the spell, the way of it.

Her first guess was off, but the question cracks open a better one. She is not asking for a legend now, only for the path that made him.

Let's exit this mine first. You must first sew the seed to grow the seed
