The scent does its work. Beyond the barricade, the heavy breathing slows, then slips into one uneven hush after another. At last, the mine falls quiet except for water ticking somewhere in the dark.

One by one, the unseen beasts stop moving altogether. The tension drains from the side tunnel, and the air grows still around the door.

The Pilgrim sinks to the floor with a shaky exhale. Her hands, which had been trembling around nothing, settle into her lap.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

You did it. I thought we were done for.

She looks up at Shakazar Frambling from under the lamp glow, awe and relief softening the strain in her face. The extra ore sack, the smear beneath the door, and the rough-hewn barricade all sit in a tired little triumph of stone and hide.

Will you stay a while longer? Just until I can breathe easy again.

Shakazar Frambling catches the pilgrim’s eye and turns from the barricade, already moving. His staff taps once on the stone, a quiet signal to follow.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

Right. Yes. I am coming.

She pushes herself up, unsteady at first, then hurries after him with both hands hovering close to her chest.

Keep close.

The pair hurry past the lamp into a narrower stretch of tunnel, the sleeping shapes behind the door left behind in the dark.

Sister Mael

Sister Mael

Those mushrooms of yours... did they really put the beasts to sleep?

The question hangs between them as the mine opens toward a faint, colder draft ahead, and the pilgrim’s fear shifts into sharp, searching wonder.

Reaching the mines exit, Shaka looks for a secure suitable place to set up camp

The tunnel widens at last into a rough chamber near the old exit. Cold air leaks through a cracked seam in the stone, and Shakazar slows to read the ground.

The floor is dry here, with firm gravel and no fresh prints.

He plants his staff beside a broken cart frame and tests the ceiling with one broad, careful glance.

A shallow alcove sits out of the draft, tucked beside a wall of old copper slag, sheltered from falling stone.

This is safe... isn't it?

And that powder and those mushrooms, what are they doing to the beasts?

Her fear still shakes her voice, but it now strains toward his kit instead of the dark behind them.

Id rather find a more suitable camp outside of these mines. Leads the pilgrim out of the mines and into the nearby forest
