Shelter Without Captivity
Mother
Mother

You remain beside the hall bench, one mountain lion cub purring beneath your hand while its sibling curls against it. The open doorway frames the darkening forest.

Mother returns carrying two shallow bowls, folded wool bedding, and a small wooden screen. She sets everything down quietly, leaving the entry wide enough for the cubs to depart whenever they choose.

Mother

Mother

Water first, darling. I will place the bedding near the hearth, but I will not close the door or pen them in. Their choice must remain theirs.

She fills both bowls and slides them beneath the bench, then spreads the wool nearby rather than beneath the cubs. The arrangement offers warmth without disturbing their chosen shelter.

Mother

Mother

If they leave, we let them go. If they stay, we watch what they eat, keep them warm, and ask Mirelle whether the forest has any claim we should respect.

The cub beneath your hand stretches toward the water, then settles again against your palm. Its sibling remains tucked close, while the forest waits beyond the unlatched doorway.

“It seems we have two new additions to the lodge. I say as I head up to my room to get ready for bed follow by both kittens”

umbralia

It seems we have two new additions to the lodge.

You rise from beside the hall bench and head toward the stairs, leaving the open entry behind you. The mountain lion cubs follow close at your heels.

Their soft paws make almost no sound on the boards. One keeps beside your ankle while the other trails just behind, neither showing interest in returning to the forest.

You climb to your room at an unhurried pace, and the cubs manage the stairs after you with careful, awkward steps. Their quiet purring follows into the upper hall.

Inside your room, you prepare for bed while the cubs settle near the threshold, close enough to remain companions but still free to wander back downstairs.

The lodge grows quieter around you. Beyond the open doorway, the dark forest waits, but both cubs remain inside, choosing the warmth and safety of their new home for the night.

“I crawl onto the bed and get under the covers, and the cubs curl up on either side of me”

Shelter Without Captivity

You crawl onto the bed and draw the covers over yourself, settling into the familiar warmth while the quiet lodge gathers around you.

The cub beneath your hand climbs up beside you and curls against one side of your body. The cub curled against its sibling follows carefully, tucking itself against your other side.

The bedding shifts beneath their small weight, then becomes still. One cub rests its chin near your shoulder while the other presses close against your hip.

Their warmth reaches you through the covers, accompanied by two soft, steady purrs. Neither cub seems inclined to leave the shelter they have chosen.

umbralia

umbralia

They are warm, safe, and here.

Outside, the forest darkens beyond the window. Inside, the cubs settle more deeply against you, and sleep comes gently beneath their contented purring.

“In the morning I wake to see each cub holding a dead squirrel and let out a quick scream follow by a genuine laugh and I say “I saw this coming, but that doesn’t mean I was expecting it” as I continue to laugh”

Shelter Without Captivity

Morning light reaches across the bed. You wake to find the cub beneath your hand sitting proudly at your side, a dead squirrel held gently between its jaws, while its sibling presents another at your hip.

umbralia

umbralia

I saw this coming, but that doesn’t mean I was expecting it.

A quick scream escapes you before genuine laughter overtakes it. The cubs remain perfectly still, watching your reaction with bright, uncertain eyes and their small hunting trophies held carefully in place.

The first cub lowers its squirrel onto the blanket. After a moment, the second does the same, as though your laughter has clarified that the gifts require a different sort of ceremony.

Both cubs edge closer instead of retreating. Their tails curl around their paws, and their purring resumes beneath your laughter while the two squirrels lie undisturbed at the foot of the bed.

The morning begins with unexpected offerings, helpless amusement, and two proud companions waiting to learn whether their gifts have earned them another place beside you.

“I grab both of the squirrels, get out of the bed, and head downstairs to skin and clean them”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Shelter Without Captivity

You gather both squirrels from the blanket, careful not to jostle the proud cubs. They watch as you rise, their ears following every movement.

The cubs trail you down the stairs. At the kitchen, you retrieve an ordinary knife from the cutlery drawer, then carry the squirrels to the worktable.

You skin and clean the two offerings with practiced care, keeping the work orderly and efficient. The knife slips once, scraping your palm and leaving a shallow sting.

umbralia

The cut is shallow, but it makes the knife harder to hold.

You rinse the scrape, tighten your grip, and finish cleaning both squirrels. Their meat is wrapped and set aside, ready for the lodge’s cooking pot.

The cubs sit beneath the table, gazing up with bright expectation. Their gifts have become a useful meal, though your palm throbs faintly as you set the knife down.

You retrieve two ordinary plates from the kitchen shelf, divide the cleaned squirrel meat into tidy portions, and place one plate before each cub beneath the table.

The cub beneath your hand lowers its head to the first plate at once. The cub curled against its sibling sniffs its portion, then begins eating with careful, pleased bites.

The kitchen door opens behind you. Mother steps in, pauses at the sight of the two plates, and takes in the cubs’ contented silence.

Mother

Mother

Well, darling. I see breakfast has become a shared household responsibility.

She comes closer without disturbing them, noticing the clean portions and the knife resting safely beyond the table’s edge. Her gaze settles briefly on your scraped palm.

Mother

Mother

They seem grateful, and you have done the work neatly. Let me wash those plates afterward, and let me look at your hand before you prepare anything else.

“The cubs quite literally brought their breakfast to my bed. I say as give mother my hand so she can clean the cut”

Shelter Without Captivity
Mother
Mother

You set the knife aside and extend your scraped hand to Mother. Beneath the table, both cubs pause over their plates, watching the exchange with alert interest.

Mother

Mother

Of course, darling. Hold still for me, and we will have this clean before it becomes troublesome.

Mother guides your hand to the washbasin and rinses away the last traces of blood. The shallow scrape stings briefly, then settles beneath the cool water.

She pats your palm dry with a clean cloth, examines the small cut, and applies a thin smear of healing salve before wrapping it lightly.

Mother

Mother

There. Nothing serious, but use the other hand for the rest of breakfast. Your new companions have already provided enough work for one morning.

The cub beneath your hand resumes eating, while its sibling nudges the empty plate once and looks up at you. Mother keeps your treated hand gently supported until the salve takes hold.

“The cubs seem like they are house-trained Wich is a little odd, but I will say I’m greatfull I don’t have to train them, but still”

You glance from the two empty plates to the clean kitchen floor, then toward the doorway. Neither cub has left a mess or shown the slightest uncertainty about where to settle.

umbralia

umbralia

You two seem house-trained, which is a little odd. Still, I’m grateful I won’t have to train you.

Both cubs lift their heads beneath the table. One flicks an ear, while the other nudges its empty plate back into place before settling against its sibling.

Mother finishes securing the light wrap around your palm and follows your gaze to the spotless floor. Her expression shifts from concern to quiet amusement.

Mother

Mother

Perhaps they came from a very orderly den, darling. Whatever taught them, we can be grateful for the lesson.

The cubs resume their contented purring beneath the table. Their plates are clean, the floor remains undisturbed, and the lodge accepts their strange good manners as another welcome surprise.

“Wait, didn’t a freind of fathers build a home in those woods?”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

umbralia

umbralia

Wait, didn’t a friend of Father’s build a home in those woods?

Mother pauses beside the table, one hand resting near your bandaged palm. The question draws an old memory from the household’s scattered history.

Mother

Mother

Yes, darling. Teren built a small stone home beyond the eastern redwoods, near the ravine. Your father visited him there more than once.

The answer settles the main question, but Mother’s memory carries no certain account of what became of the house after Teren left the woods.

Mother

Mother

I cannot tell you whether it still stands, or whether anyone lives there now. I remember only the ravine and a chimney among the trees.

The recollection costs several quiet minutes as Mother searches through details she has not spoken aloud in years. The eastern woods now hold a known landmark, but its present state remains unchecked.

“Well then, that settles it, I’m going to find out”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Well then, that settles it. I’m going to find out.

You take the eastern path beneath the redwoods, with the two cubs padding after you. The walk takes longer than expected as you search for the ravine and chimney Mother remembered.

Mother

Mother

Stay on the level ground, darling. If the path becomes steep, come back and tell me what you learned.

Near sunset, the trees open above a narrow ravine. Teren’s stone home still stands, its roof weathered but whole, with a thin ribbon of smoke rising from the chimney.

A small stack of fresh firewood rests beside the door, and warm light shows through one shutter. Someone occupies the house now, though the fading light hides who it is.

You have your answer, but reaching it cost the remaining daylight. The house is occupied, while its resident and any connection to Teren remain unknown until another visit.

“Across the ravine I see a muscular male deinonychus with silver scales and dark feathers, beside him stands a mature female mountain lion”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Shelter Without Captivity

Across the ravine, a muscular adult male deinonychus, with a narrow scaled face, swept-back black feathers, and a dark leather tunic stands beside the stone home. Silver scales catch the dying light beneath his dark feathers, and one clawed hand rests near a sheathed blade.

At his side waits a mature female mountain lion, with a thick tawny coat, rounded ears, and a long, heavy tail, broad-shouldered and tawny, her amber eyes fixed on the redwoods. She stands calmly, not like a captive animal but a deliberate companion.

umbralia

The deinonychus and the mountain lion belong together, and both are watching this side of the ravine.

The silver-scaled figure turns slightly toward the house, revealing a weathered charm of pale stone hanging at his throat. Its shape resembles an old family mark, though distance prevents certainty.

The mountain lion lifts her muzzle and scents the evening air. She does not growl or advance; instead, her tail gives one slow sweep while the deinonychus remains quietly alert.

From this distance, you can distinguish no conversation, but the pair’s ease beside the occupied home is unmistakable. Whoever lives there is not alone, and these watchers appear welcome.

the silver-scaled deinonychus
The Silver-Scaled Deinonychus

You raise two fingers and let out a sharp whistle across the ravine. As the note carries, loose gravel shifts beneath your leading foot, forcing you to catch yourself against a cedar trunk with a scraped palm.

The silver-scaled deinonychus, his long tail held level behind him turns fully toward you, one hand settling on his sheathed blade. The mature mountain lion pivots beside him, ears forward and amber eyes fixed on your position.

Sareth

Sareth

You have our attention. Speak, traveler.

The mountain lion remains beside him, calm but watchful. She gives a low questioning chuff toward the ravine, then looks back to you without advancing.

Your palm stings where the bark caught it, a shallow scrape bright against your scales. Across the gap, the pair waits in plain view, their attention secured.

Sareth

Sareth

The ravine is safe to cross at the northern shelf, if you intend a closer conversation.

He gestures toward a pale stone shelf winding down through the trees. The mature mountain lion watches the route, then returns her gaze to you, offering no sign of hostility.

“Are you Teren? I ask as head to the northern shelf to cross”

Are you Teren?

You descend toward the northern shelf, testing each foothold before committing your weight. Loose stone rolls beneath you, and your ankle twists sharply, but you catch yourself and reach the pale crossing with a fresh, throbbing strain.

You cross the narrow shelf above the ravine and arrive beside the stone home. The mature mountain lion watches your injured step, while the deinonychus keeps his hand near the sheathed blade without drawing it.

Sareth

Sareth

No. I am Sareth. Teren was my father, and this was his home.

The answer settles the old connection at once. Smoke threads from the chimney behind him, and the mountain lion shifts closer to Sareth, accepting your presence without relaxing her watch.

Sareth

Sareth

You knew my father, then. Come inside if your ankle permits it. We can speak where the ravine cannot carry every word.

Sareth steps aside from the doorway, leaving you a clear path into the lit stone house. The mature mountain lion remains at his shoulder, calm and watchful as you decide whether to enter.

“I found these cub by the lake yesterday, I brought them home, and they seemed to be house-trained and I was curious why, so I came out here in hopes to find someone”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

umbralia

umbralia

I found the cubs by the lake yesterday and brought them home. They seemed house-trained, so I came looking for someone who might explain why.

Sareth’s guarded posture eases. The mature mountain lion studies you, then lowers her head as if recognizing the subject of your search.

Sareth

Sareth

Then you have found the right house. Those cubs are Veyra’s young, and she taught them where to relieve themselves, where to sleep, and how not to foul a den.

The mountain lion steps nearer, her heavy tail sweeping once behind her. At Sareth’s spoken name, she glances toward him, then back toward the redwoods.

Sareth

Sareth

Veyra found the cubs’ mother dead last spring. She raised them here until they were strong enough to range, and they learned from her habits as much as from mine.

His gaze drops briefly to your injured ankle, then returns to your face. Nothing in his manner suggests accusation; only a careful accounting of what the cubs were taught.

Sareth

Sareth

They chose your lodge because you fed them, sang to them, and gave them shelter. If they remain, I can teach you their signals and help Veyra judge whether they are ready to stay.

That would be nice, if you’re willing to help.

Sareth’s guarded expression softens into approval. Veyra steps nearer, her amber gaze passing from your strained ankle toward the direction of the lodge.

Sareth

Sareth

I am willing. We can begin with the cubs’ calls, their warning signs, and the gestures that tell them where to follow.

Veyra gives a low, rolling chuff. From the redwoods, the two cubs answer with thin chirps, then press close together as if listening for the lesson.

Sareth

Sareth

That chuff means gather. The sharper call means danger, though they may use it for anything unfamiliar until they learn better judgment.

Sareth demonstrates the gathering call, and Veyra repeats it with patient authority. The cubs trot from beneath the trees, settling beside you while their teacher watches.
