The Watcher's Reveal at the Gate

At Namal’s boots, the signet ring skitters once more in Baseva’s memory, then the real thing lies there in the mud, dark with fresh blood. The gate lanterns throw hard gold across the lane, and the fresh smear on the inside post seems suddenly less like dirt and more like a warning.

Namal

Namal

That ring, Baseva... it is mine to recognize. The Watcher has been here.

The Miller goes pale beside him, fingers tightening on his sleeve. He looks from the ring to the gate, then toward the village dark as if counting every shadow that might already be inside.

The Miller

The Miller

The one in the reeds was not just watching. I saw the same seal once, at the mill. I thought it was a courier’s trick.

Namal swallows hard and lifts his gaze to Baseva, desperation plain in the set of his ears. Behind them, the open gate creaks in the wind, and somewhere in the lane, something small and wet drops from a roof edge.

The Shadowed Watcher

The Shadowed Watcher

Too late to hide him now. I only needed you to bring the Baron home.

A hooded figure steps into lantern light at the far end of the lane, empty hands spread wide, blood on one cuff and a second ring gleaming at their throat. Their posture is not that of a fleeing thief. It is the stance of someone finishing a long-delayed exchange.

The Watcher's Reveal at the Gate

Baseva drives forward in a single armored surge, shield and body turning the lane into a wall. The Watcher slips the first impact, but the second catches them hard enough to drive them off balance, their hood jerking back as blood darkens their cuff. They stumble, breathing ragged, one hand flying to the wound.

The Shadowed Watcher

The Shadowed Watcher

No, wait. I can still walk away from this.

The lantern light wavers over the Watcher’s face as they retreat a half-step, eyes fixed on Baseva’s shield instead of the Baron. Behind her, Namal and the Miller remain pinned in the gate light, and the open lane holds its breath around the wounded figure.
