The Miller's Warning at Dusk

Baseva reaches Tillworth Village at dusk, dust-streaked and armored, the river mist cooling her fur. Ahead, the mill wheel turns with steady patience, and the market lane lies too quiet for a place this size.

Baseva

Baseva

The ring should stand out if I can get close enough.

She scans the stalls and doorways, then spots a miller near the grain sacks, one hand hidden at his side. A flash of blue catches the dying light, cracked clean through.

The Miller

The Miller

You are late. If you came for Namal, you need to move now.

The miller thrusts the broken blue ring into view, then jerks his chin toward the river path. At the same moment, a shadow shifts on a rooftop beyond the square, watching the village road.

The Miller

The Miller

That watcher is not one of ours.

Baseva has found the Baron’s trail, and the assassin is already in the village.

I follow the river path

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Baseva breaks from the square and takes the river path, boots sinking soft into the mist-wet mud.

The mill’s turning wheel hammers a steady rhythm behind her as the lane narrows between leaning fences and dark water.

Ahead, a narrow footbridge cuts across a reed-choked bend, and fresh tracks press toward it in the damp ground.

The Miller

The Miller

Do not trust the road. He passed here before dusk, with guards close behind.

The miller’s voice drops to a rough whisper as he points, not at the bridge, but at the opposite bank where willows crowd the water.

The Shadowed Watcher

The Shadowed Watcher

Too slow, paladin.

A shape shifts among the reeds downstream, and the path ahead opens into a fork, one way toward the bridge, one toward the dark waterline.

I ask the miller about the cracked blue ring

FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -3)

The Miller's Warning at Dusk

The miller flinches at the question, then glances toward the water as if the ring itself might hear him.

The Miller

The Miller

Cracked blue enamel, yes. Not a trinket. It is the baron’s mark, split by force. I saw it in a hand that should not have had it.

He swallows, shoulders tight, and thumbs the sign of warding at his chest before looking back to Baseva.

The Miller

The Miller

I told you he came with guards close behind. That was meant to hide him, or hunt him. I cannot tell which.

The Miller

The Miller

If you mean to find Namal, do not search the road. Follow the riverbank where the willows bend low. Someone there knows the rest.

The Shadowed Watcher shifts farther back in the reeds, watching the exchange without stepping in.

I follow the riverbank where the willows bend low

FAILURE (Fair Survival, rolled -1)

The Miller's Warning at Dusk

Baseva turns from the mill and follows the bank, but the mist thickens fast. The willow shadows knot together, and the fresh tracks split into two sets near the waterline.

One trail sinks toward the reeds. The other vanishes where the mud has been scuffed over by hurried boots, as if someone doubled back.

A soft scrape answers from the brush ahead, then a boot edge flashes once in the gray before disappearing again.

The Miller

The Miller

No, wait. If he is circling, he means to cut you off from the path.

The miller lifts a shaking hand and points past the bend, where the river narrows under leaning willows.

The Shadowed Watcher

The Shadowed Watcher

Keep to the open ground, paladin. The bank is not yours to claim.

The reeds part wider for a heartbeat, showing only a retreating shape and a line of disturbed water. Something downstream moves, and the way forward tightens around Baseva.

I follow the retreating shape downstream

SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +2)

The Miller's Warning at Dusk

Baseva surges downstream along the slick bank, her weight eating the mud without losing speed. The retreating shape breaks from the reeds ahead, and the river path opens into a narrow bend choked with willow roots.

She closes the gap in a burst, shield up, and the figure ahead stumbles at the sudden pressure of her approach.

The Shadowed Watcher

The Shadowed Watcher

Tch. Still behind you.

Baseva catches the watcher at the bend, forcing them to halt on the bank. A dropped blue ribbon lies snagged in the roots, wet and bright against the dark mud.

The Miller

The Miller

That mark... the Baron passed this way. The fool's trail is real.

The watcher angles a glance toward the upstream path, measuring escape, while the miller points at the ribbon with a shaking finger.

If you want the baron, you are already late. Ask your friend what he saw at the mill.
