The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva unfolds the damp paper. The ink bleeds across the parchment, revealing a jagged, familiar wax seal that mirrors the ledgers from the Arena.

Namal

Namal

That mark. I have not seen it since the last Tournament. It is the Shadow of Feranden, a faction long thought dead.

The Miller

The Miller

If they are back, this village is finished. They do not just kidnap lords, they erase everyone who sees their faces.

Baseva

Baseva

The muddy bootprint leads toward the wall, not the exit.

Baseva shifts her weight, her blessed armor clinking softly as she steps between the Miller and the dark passage.

Namal

Namal

Baseva, you must get us out of here. If this seal is what I fear, we are already being hunted.

Lead the Baron and the Miller out of the cellar immediately.

The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva hooks an arm under Namal’s shoulder and hauls him up in one smooth surge. The Miller scrambles after them, boots slipping in the puddled dirt as the cellar tightens around their breath.

She drives them toward the stairs, shield angled low to guard the narrow climb. The discarded ropes slap against her greaves as they pass, and the muddy wall flashes by beside her furred arm.

The Miller

The Miller

There, there, the latch. I can open it.

The Miller yanks the door free at the top, and cold river air spills into the cellar. Moonlight strikes the threshold, turning the cramped stone into a mouth that finally opens.

Namal

Namal

Good. Move, all of you, before someone below hears us.

Baseva gets both men through the doorway and into the dark bank-side path. Behind them, the cellar remains hidden, but a fresh smear of mud on the stair rail shows the watcher was here recently.

The Miller

The Miller

Baseva... that mark was not old. What if the Shadow is still close?

I get Namal somewhere safer

SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled -2)

The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva tightens her grip on Namal and guides him away from the cellar mouth, her shield still between him and the dark path.

The Baron stumbles once, then catches himself, cloak clutched close as he keeps pace beside her.

The Miller

The Miller

The village lane is too open. Take him to the chapel steps, or anywhere with a locked door.

Moonlight slides over the riverbank path ahead, and the mud at their boots grows deeper with every hurried step.

Namal

Namal

Then do not slow. If that watcher returns, I would rather meet him behind stone than on bare ground.

Baseva leads the pair onward, and the narrow path opens toward the faint, distant shape of safer walls.

A soft scrape comes from the black reeds behind them, just out of sight, as if something has shifted to follow.

I keep moving without slowing

SUCCESS (Great Health, rolled -2)

The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva keeps her pace and the muddy path obeys her, boots driving through the wet bank without pause.

Namal matches her stride, cloak snagging once at his knees before he yanks it free and hurries on.

The Miller

The Miller

Good. Do not let the dark settle behind us.

Ahead, the village edge sharpens out of the gloom, while the reeds behind them shiver again with that same unseen scrape.

Namal

Namal

I hear it. Keep your shield up, Baseva.

The trio presses forward in a tight line, the riverbank giving way to firmer ground, but the sound in the reeds follows at their backs.

The Miller

The Miller

If it means to strike, it will have to choose now.

I push toward the village gate

SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +0)

The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva surges the last stretch of bank path, shield forward, and the mud finally gives way to hard-packed earth.

The village gate looms ahead, dim lanterns hanging from its posts, and the path opens into a narrow approach no watcher can easily hide within.

The Miller

The Miller

There, by the gate. Keep moving, do not stop.

Namal

Namal

Good. Once we are inside, bar the door at once.

A tremor of reeds snaps behind them, then the sound cuts off as if something crouching there has lost its patience.

Baseva reaches the gate first, putting herself between the dark path and the two men as the village entrance stands open before them.

The Miller

The Miller

Baseva... do you see anything in the dark beyond the posts?

I enter the village with Namal

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

The Shadow of Feranden Revealed

Baseva lowers her shield just enough to move, and the gate swallows them in lantern gold. Namal slips in beside her, cloak brushing the posts, while the Miller hurries after with one last glance over his shoulder.

The Miller

The Miller

Inside, now. Please.

The village lane lies silent beyond the gate, hard earth damp underfoot and shuttered windows reflecting the light. Behind them, the open passage to the reeds stays dark and empty.

Namal

Namal

Bar it, and bar it well. If that thing follows, it will find no welcome here.

Baseva crosses the threshold with them, her bulk filling the entry for a breath before she clears the way. A fresh smear of wet mud marks the inside edge of the post, as if someone had brushed by only moments ago.

The Miller

The Miller

That was not there before.

Namal turns toward the lane, pale with strain but now inside the gate, and the Miller points deeper into the village where a low, locked building waits in shadow. Both men look to Baseva for the next move.
