The floor gives way with a sickening crunch of earth and ancient root. RagNook and Eldred plummet into the abyss, slamming into a bed of damp, luminescent moss. The silence of the cavern is absolute, save for the rhythmic pulse of glowing fungi clinging to the ribs of colossal, long-dead leviathans.

RagNook Butcher of the East
The scent of ozone and curing salt is unmistakable. This is not just a cave, it is a larder forgotten by time itself.

Eldred
My gods, RagNook. Look at the size of these bones. What kind of hell have we fallen into?

RagNook Butcher of the East
Keep your voice low, Eldred. The air here tastes of seasoning. Something has been cooking in this hollow for centuries. We need to find an exit before the host of this kitchen returns home.
RagNook rises, his massive frame dwarfed by a ribcage the size of a longhouse, his hand instinctively gripping the hilt of his cleaver as he scans the shadows for movement.
+ Scene Quest Added
Escape the subterranean larder
“Examine the area looking for any signs of an exit, and maybe finding a few rare ingredients”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

RagNook Butcher of the East
The bioluminescent fungi are feeding on something rich. That patch of translucent, gelatinous growth near the leviathan bone... that is Abyssal Marrow, a delicacy rumored to add a century to one’s life.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Look there, Eldred. See how the moss recedes from that fissure? The draft is thin, but it is moving. The air smells of wet stone and mountain rain.
RagNook moves toward the base of the massive ribcage, his calloused fingers carefully scraping a handful of the glowing, viscous marrow into a leather pouch. Behind the skeletal arch, he discovers a narrow, vertical chimney in the rock face, carved by the steady erosion of an ancient underground spring. It is tight, but it offers a path upward.

Eldred
I don't care how it smells, that hole is barely wide enough for a goat, let alone a man of his size.

Eldred
Can you actually fit through that, RagNook? Or are we just waiting for whatever lives here to smell our blood?
+ New Item Acquired
Abyssal Marrow
“No I cannot fit, we must keep searching, for an exit, and more ingredients”
SUCCESS (Legendary Survival, rolled -2)

RagNook Butcher of the East
The fissure is choked with loose shale and sharp outcroppings. If I try to force my frame through, I will be stuck like a pig in a gate, vulnerable to whatever skims the shadows of this cavern.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Shush, Eldred. Your panic is loud enough to wake the dead. This chimney is a tomb for a man of my stature, but look at the tremors in the dust near the base of that leviathan spine. The draft isn't just leaking. It is being pulled.
RagNook moves toward the far end of the chamber, his keen eyes tracing the air currents. He pushes aside a stack of calcified ribs, revealing a hidden alcove obscured by thick, fungal growth. Within the alcove sits a heavy, iron-bound trapdoor, vibrating with the force of an subterranean draft. Resting atop the wood is a cluster of rare Blood-Cap mushrooms, their caps pulsing with a deep, rhythmic violet light.

RagNook Butcher of the East
A larder door. And a harvest worth a king's ransom. Help me pry this, and we shall eat well before we find our exit.
+ Story Quest Added
Harvest the Blood-Cap mushrooms
+ New Item Acquired
Blood-Cap mushrooms
“Pry open the trap door and climb down through the hole”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

RagNook jams the edge of his heavy cleaver into the seam of the iron-bound wood. With a grunt that vibrates through the cavern floor, his muscles knot like coiled cables. The iron groans, a sound of tortured metal, before the seal shatters and the trapdoor swings violently downward into a void of darkness.

RagNook Butcher of the East
The stench of stale, metallic air hits me first. This isn't just a larder. It's a throat.

Eldred
By the gods, you actually moved it. But look down there... it isn't solid ground.
A swarm of bioluminescent insects rises from the opening, casting long, frantic shadows against the rib-cage walls. RagNook stares into the abyss, his one good eye narrowing as he spots a ledge barely three feet below, covered in slick, viscous slime. The trapdoor remains swinging on rusted, squealing hinges, threatening to slam shut at the slightest breeze.

RagNook Butcher of the East
If I drop now, I might lose my footing. If I wait, the sound of that splintering wood will surely bring the host running.
“Look for a rope or latter to use to descend”
FAILURE (Great Perception, rolled -2)

RagNook scans the darkness, his calloused hands sweeping along the cold, cavern floor for any frayed rope or rotted wooden ladder. His fingers catch only on jagged bone fragments and loose scree. There is nothing here but the scent of decay and the wet slide of the walls.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Nothing. Not even a vine to rappel down. The darkness is too deep and the floor too slick for a simple jump.

Eldred
RagNook, I hear something. A skittering sound. It is coming from the far side of the chamber, beneath the bones!
The skittering grows into a wet, rhythmic clicking that echoes against the limestone. A pale, multi-jointed limb erupts from the darkness of the lower shaft, latching onto the edge of the trapdoor with unnatural strength. The rusted hinges shriek, the metal warping as something heavy from below begins to haul itself upward, forcing the trapdoor to snap toward a vertical position.

RagNook Butcher of the East
It knows we are here. The choice is made for me.
+ Scene Quest Added
Survive the creature emerging from the shaft
“Move back away from the shaft and identity the creature, along with any potential weak spots or soft joints”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +3)

RagNook pivots on his heel, boots sliding on the slick limestone as he puts distance between himself and the shaft. His keen eye tracks the movement, parsing the anatomy of the intruder.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Not a beast of the surface. Too pale, too many joints. The chitin is thick, but look at the soft tissue near the primary shoulder articulation. That membrane is exposed. One strike there would sever the limb entirely.

Eldred
By the gods, RagNook! What is that thing? We have to run!
The creature hauls itself further into the light, revealing a torso lined with rows of vibrating, needle-like mandibles. It senses the heat of the bioluminescent insects, its multifaceted eyes swiveling toward the butcher. It prepares to lunge, its center of gravity shifting forward.

RagNook Butcher of the East
It is fast, but it relies on that single, dominant limb to anchor its weight. If I collapse the ledge while it is over-extended, the weight of the stone will do the butchering for me.
+ Scene Quest Added
Defeat the larder host
“Use the ironwood cleaver to strike the soft tissue near the primary shoulder articulation”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled -2)

RagNook lunges, ignoring the creature's frantic clicking. He channels the weight of his massive frame into a singular, precision strike. The ironwood cleaver descends in a shimmering arc, biting deep into the exposed, pulsating membrane of the creature's shoulder.

RagNook Butcher of the East
The tension is gone. The muscle fibers are severed. Now, I leverage the weight.
With a grunt, RagNook twists his wrist, using the haft of his blade as a fulcrum against the stone shelf. A sickening snap echoes through the larder as the chitinous limb goes limp, spraying a viscous, bioluminescent ichor across the cavern floor. The creature lets out a high-pitched, harmonic shriek, its balance instantly compromised as the massive limb loses all structural integrity. It begins to topple sideways, claws scraping uselessly against the crumbling ledge.

Eldred
By the ancestors! It is going down!
