The crushing weight of the grotto gives way to the sharp, thin air of the Frost-Spine Peaks. RagNook emerges onto a jagged cliffside overlooking a valley of frozen pine. Below, the wind howls like a wounded beast, masking the sound of his heavy boots on the ice.
Eldred stands by a small, pathetic pile of burning brushwood, his hands trembling as he grips a rusted iron poker. He glances toward the treeline where the snow is disturbed by long, dragging furrows.

Eldred
RagNook Butcher of the East... thank the gods you climbed out of that hell. I thought for sure the shadows had claimed you.

RagNook Butcher of the East
The boy smells of fear and wet wool. He is useless as a blade, but his panic is a compass pointing toward whatever tracked him here.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Stop shaking, lad. Tell me what stalks these woods. Does it have scales, or is it just another scavenger wanting a piece of my prize?

Eldred
It is not a scavenger, Butcher. It is the reason the village burned. It has been hunting me since the Ironwood.

Survive the creature hunting Eldred
“make a fire and cook a meal of leviathan meat and iron-cap truffles, using whatever other ingredients we have as well, to make a meal that strengthens us”
SUCCESS (Legendary Cooking, rolled -3)

RagNook ignores the boy's tremulous warning, his focus shifting to the frozen earth. He clears a patch of snow with a heavy boot, arranging his stones. With practiced efficiency, he draws his cleaver, slicing thin, translucent ribbons of frozen leviathan meat. The air hisses as he drops the flesh into a searing iron pan alongside earthy, pungent iron-cap truffles. The scent of rendering fat and savory forest fungi cuts through the biting frost, creating a small, steaming oasis of warmth.

RagNook Butcher of the East
The meat is aged to perfection. The truffles will provide the heat needed to endure the coming climb. One good meal can turn a shivering coward into a man who can hold a spear.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Eat, Eldred. If you are to be bait for a dragon, you might as well have a belly full of strength before you die.

Eldred
The smell... it is overwhelming. I cannot tell if I am hungry or if the beast is already upon us.
“let us eat and face our foe”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Eldred reaches for a slice of the steaming, charred meat with trembling fingers. As he takes a hesitant bite, a deep, resonant rumble vibrates through the ice beneath their feet. The sound is not of thunder, but of a rhythmic, heavy tread that shakes the very marrow in their bones.

RagNook Butcher of the East
He is here. The scent of sulfur and ozone is masking the smell of my own cooking. He wants a tribute, or perhaps he just wants to see the fear in our eyes before he makes us his next meal.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Keep eating, boy. A full stomach makes for a heavier corpse, and I intend to make his maw regret the texture of my hide.
A massive shadow drifts over the encampment, blotting out the pale moonlight. Jagged claws scrape against the mountain wall just above their heads, sending a cascade of razor-sharp ice shards raining down around the fire.
+ Scene Quest Added
Survive the dragon's assault
“take cover in the caves and attempt to lure the beast to the ground”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -1)

RagNook surges toward the cave entrance, his boots sliding on the slick, frozen shelf. He misjudges the weight of his own gear and the treacherous slope, slamming his shoulder hard against the jagged stone wall instead of finding the sanctuary of the tunnel.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Clumsy fool. The ice has no mercy for a misstep, and the beast is already banking for the kill. I need to recover before the next pass.
A massive, scaled wing clips the cliffside above, showering the pair in a hail of granite and ice. Eldred screams, shielding his head as the fire pit is pulverized by a falling boulder, plunging their only source of warmth into darkness. The dragon’s tail whips around the corner, shattering the silence with a deafening crack against the stone, pinning RagNook in the open.

Eldred
RagNook! It is blocking the exit!
“throw a sharp rock at the dragons wing in attempt to peirce it”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

RagNook Butcher of the East
Soft spot, just below the shoulder joint. A butcher knows where the sinew yields to the steel.
RagNook twists his core, his massive frame shifting despite the treacherous footing. He snatches a jagged, fist-sized shard of obsidian-sharp granite from the ground and hurls it with the force of a trebuchet. The stone whistles through the freezing air, striking the dragon’s leathery wing precisely where the membrane thins.
A spray of dark, viscous ichor erupts, staining the pristine snow. The beast bellows, a sound that vibrates in the marrow of RagNook’s bones, and it rears back, its massive head snapping toward the source of the injury. The tail retreats from the cave entrance, leaving the path clear for a brief, blood-pumping second.

Eldred
It knows! It is looking right at you!

RagNook Butcher of the East
Now the real hunt begins. If I can draw it deeper into the narrow pass, I might just be able to carve it down to size.
+ Scene Quest Added
Lure the dragon into the narrow pass
“retreat a little deeper into the narrow pass”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

RagNook pivots, his heavy boots crunching into the frozen crust as he lunges toward the jagged bottleneck of the mountain pass. He keeps his center of gravity low, moving with the practiced, heavy grace of an apex predator retreating into his den.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Keep moving, boy! Do not look at the sky, look at your footing!
The dragon screams in frustration, a sonic boom of sound that sends fresh, jagged ice sheets cascading from the peaks above. Its massive, scaled shadow looms over the pass, but as the beast lunges, its head collides with the narrowing canyon walls, forcing it to stall. The creature’s talons gouge deep, sparking against the granite as it fights for purchase.

RagNook Butcher of the East
It is too large for this gap. Its reach is limited by the very stone I use for cover. I have it exactly where I need it.

Eldred
It is pinning the path behind us! How are we supposed to get out?
Quest Complete
Lure the dragon into the narrow pass
Skill Upgrade: Tactical Positioning Mediocre
“while the beast is low enough strike its weakspots”
SUCCESS (Legendary Anatomy, rolled -2)

RagNook doesn't hesitate. As the dragon’s snout scrapes the granite, he surges forward. His cleaver catches the light, a silver blur as he drops his weight into a precision strike. He carves deep into the soft, exposed junction where the beast’s neck meets the shoulder plating. Thick, searing ichor sprays against the snow, and the creature lets out a gargantuan, bone-rattling roar.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Feed on the rock if you must, beast. But your hide is mine!
The dragon thrashes, its massive skull swinging wildly and smashing into the canyon wall. A massive slab of frozen shale detaches above, plummeting toward the struggling dragon.

RagNook Butcher of the East
Now the weight of the mountain finishes the butcher's work.

Eldred
It is coming down! Run, RagNook!
