Dawn spills through the shed slats in pale bars. Mara lowers the bow she now holds, and Vesper has shifted aside from the doorway, leaving the path to the yard open. The Courier lies crumpled on a blanket, skin hot, breath shallow.

The Child tightens both hands around the satchel and looks to COOL ARROW, waiting. The shed feels smaller with the morning light in it, but the yard beyond is quiet.

Mara

Mara

He is burning up again. I can cool the fever, but only if we give him time.

Vesper

Vesper

Time is the one thing we keep trying to buy. The question is whether we spend more of it here.

COOL ARROW

The route is safer if they leave rested.

The Child

The Child

Can we stay a little longer? The satchel is safe with me. I will not let it go.

Mara checks the Courier's brow, then wraps a fresh cloth around his wrist with careful hands. His breathing eases by a hair, enough to keep the room from tipping into panic.

Mara

A longer rest is risky, but a dead man is worse. We wait, quietly, then decide with clearer heads.

Vesper leans against the cleared doorway, half in shadow, half in sunrise. The Child relaxes by a fraction, still clutching the satchel, while COOL ARROW has a brief, still moment to answer or simply sit with the others.

Mara, I am sorry. The courier cannot continue. Can I leave him here? They are not looking for him, only the child. I gave the child my word I would help him.

Silence holds for a breath. Mara looks from COOL ARROW to the feverish man, then to the satchel hugged tight against the child’s chest. The morning light catches the hard set of her jaw, then softens it.

Mara

Mara

You do not need to apologize to me for choosing who lives through the day. Yes, he stays. I will keep him hidden, fed, and watched.

And if the child is truly the target, then your word matters more than your pride. Take the road that leaves him fewer steps to chase.

Vesper glances over from the doorway and gives a small, approving nod. The Child’s shoulders loosen, just a little, while the Courier’s breathing deepens on the blanket as Mara pulls the covers higher around him.

The Child

The Child

He can sleep here? Then I will guard the satchel until you return.

Mara reaches into her herbs and sets aside a stitched packet, then presses it into COOL ARROW’s hand. It is a travel charm, plain and practical, tied with a strip of blue thread, and she murmurs that it will keep the courier’s fever from climbing if she has to send it after them.
