The hidden path spits them out into a cramped mill yard, all leaning sacks, rusted blades, and damp stone. COOL ARROW slows with the others as the yard settles around them, quiet but for the creak of boards and the soft shift of grain.

A stern man steps from the mill shadow. His eyes lock on The Child, and for one sharp breath he looks startled enough to forget himself.

Elias

Elias

You. I know that face.

The Child

The Child

He knows me.

The Courier tugs his cloak higher, trying to hide the blood on his side. Kaelith’s hand drifts toward the charm at their throat, careful and ready.

Elias

Elias

Easy. If you came by the arch, you are not the first to use that road. But I do not see strangers here by chance.

He glances from COOL ARROW to the satchel, then back to the child, measuring the whole group in a single wary look.

Elias

Elias

Rest is a luxury for those who do not carry a target on their backs. I will not have that trouble inside my walls, and I will not be the one to invite it.

Elias

Move on. The road behind the mill leads to the river, and I suggest you take it before the shadows grow any longer.

The Courier nods once, tight and grateful, and The Child shifts closer to COOL ARROW without a word. Kaelith’s eyes flick to the mill yard walls, then to the road Elias names, weighing the man at the doorway.

Elias

Elias

If you want help, the cooper’s shed by the river keeps a lamp after dusk. My sister knows the lock.

Elias does not move aside, but his shoulders ease a fraction as he speaks. His gaze cuts past them toward the lane, as if listening for pursuit beyond the mill.

Vesper

Vesper

He is warning us, not stopping us.

Behind them, the stone arch waits in the dark lane, and the choice is suddenly no longer whether to trust Elias, but whether to take his route before the night closes in.

COOL ARROW lets the lie settle into the yard like a dropped cloak. Elias studies him for one hard breath, then gives a single, curt nod toward the river road.

Elias

Elias

Then go. Quick, and keep to the shadows by the water.

The Courier tightens his grip on the satchel strap and moves first, head low. The Child follows at COOL ARROW's shoulder, and Kaelith falls in behind them, already glancing back at the doorway.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

Thank you, sir.

They clear the mill yard before Elias speaks again. Once the wall of the shed cuts him from sight, COOL ARROW changes course, leading them off the river line toward the nearby friend he knows by reputation.

A loose horseshoe skitters underfoot and clicks loud on the stones, a small betraying sound in the dark. The group freezes for half a beat, then keeps moving.

COOL ARROW snaps his bow up as the lane widens, and a rider bursts into view at the far bend. The shot takes the man in the shoulder, jolting him sideways in the saddle.

The horse shies hard, then lurches toward the river road instead of the mill yard. Hooves drum away into the dark, carrying the rider out of the immediate chase.

The arrow's hiss and the horse's scream of protest crack through the night. A shutter slams somewhere behind the sheds, and the yard feels suddenly exposed.

Elias

Elias

Enough. I heard that.

Elias steps out from the doorway at last, no longer pretending to be merely suspicious. His stare locks on COOL ARROW, then flicks to the fleeing horse.

Elias

Elias

If anyone comes asking, I saw nothing but shadows.

He jerks his chin toward the river lane, already choosing distance over trouble. The mill door swings half-shut behind him, and the yard goes tight with the sound of retreat.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

Can you make it another mile to my friends?

The courier angles his head toward the dark lane and nods once, jaw tight. Behind them, Elias stays in the mill doorway and says nothing.

COOL ARROW keeps the child steady, but the quick pace makes the satchel knock hard against his hip. A loose strap slips, and he has to catch it before it swings free.

Elias

Elias

Keep it low if you can. That door hears more than I like.

The mill yard answers with a faint creak and a rustle from inside the half-shut doorway, as if someone or something has shifted in the dark.

COOL ARROW does not stop. He carries the child through the lane toward the stone arch, with the courier limping close and the night narrowing around them.

The Courier

The Courier

That is not the place. I know this gate, and no one is taking us in tonight.

He stops short, pale with the effort, and braces a hand on the wall. The child twists in COOL ARROW's arms, staring back toward the mill arch.

The Child

The Child

Someone is moving behind us. I heard the yard door.

A scraped bolt answers from the mill side of the lane. Light thins through the stone arch, and a shadow crosses it, too slow to be a passing cart.

Elias

Elias

You should not have come back this way.

His voice is low, but it carries. Somewhere inside the mill yard, a latch clacks loose again, as if the sound itself has been heard and turned over.

The courier swallows hard and looks from the barred gate to COOL ARROW, waiting for a choice before the town wakes fully.

COOL ARROW moves first. The lane blurs under his feet, the child held high and tight, the courier staggered along beside him as the barred gate and mill arch fall behind. The shadow at the arch does not follow at once.

He cuts through a narrow passage between stone walls, then out into a tucked-away yard where a low door stands half-hidden under a sagging awning. A lantern glow leaks from a crack in the shutter.

The Courier

The Courier

That is the place. Praise be, that is the place.

The courier sags with relief, and COOL ARROW gets him through the doorway before his knees can give out. Warm bread, oil, and steeped herbs meet them inside.

Mara

Mara

Set him here. Quickly.

A broad-shouldered woman with flour on her sleeves clears a table in one sweep and kneels by the courier, already reaching for clean linen and a clay cup.

Mara does not look up from the courier, but her hands slow. She lets COOL ARROW hold the cup while she presses fresh linen to the worst of the bleeding and murmurs for him to pour the herb medicine when she nods.

The Child

She says the charms are for hiding the seal. She says the hunters follow the singing.

Mara

Mara

That matches enough of what I see. The satchel has old wardwork, and the child knows its weight in the body. That is not a stranger's story.

The child glances between COOL ARROW and Mara, then gives a small, exact nod when Mara repeats the part about the seal. The courier swallows the medicine and exhales through clenched teeth as the pain eases.

Vesper lowers their voice, eyes flicking to the latched door, then to the satchel at COOL ARROW's waist. A dull violet pulse answers from one of their charms, brief as a bruise of light.

Vesper darts out through the door, and a lantern blooms in the yard a heartbeat later. The shed door cracks open wider on its own swing, throwing a stripe of gold across the threshold and the wet stones beyond.

Cool Arrow looses through the window gap. The arrow flashes with a sharp wash of arcane light, pinning one hooded figure in the glare near the stacked casks.

The other two shapes break from the dark, drawn hard toward the bright yard. One stumbles into the open, and the lantern reveals their charms all at once, glittering violet against their chests.

The shot costs him, though. The glowing shaft scorches the window frame, and a splinter cuts Cool Arrow's wrist as the light fades, while the yard outside erupts into shouted alarm and running feet.

A second shaft cracks out of the dark and drives into the pinned hunter’s hip, folding him sideways with a strangled cry. His grip slips on the cask, and his comrades lurch in to catch him.

COOL ARROW shifts his aim in one smooth motion, and the next arrow takes the nearer hunter high in the head. The figure drops out of the lantern wash before either of the others can turn.

The yard stutters into panic. Boots pound wet stone, and the lantern swings wild in Vesper’s reach, throwing frantic light across the shed door and the stacked barrels.

COOL ARROW fires again, and the shot shatters the lamp. Firelight bursts inward, then dies in a shower of sparks and broken glass.

Vesper

The wounded man freezes, looking up too late. COOL ARROW keeps to the black edge of the shingles and sends a second shaft clean through him before he can cry out.

Vesper holds the door with both shoulders, head tilted toward the crack. The wood groans once, then settles under their weight.

A thin scrape rides the outer wall, soft as a nail on bark. COOL ARROW catches the shape at the edge of the yard, just enough to mark a last hunter crouched low behind a water barrel.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

There. By the barrel.

The hunter does not rush. A pale charm flashes at their throat, then vanishes as they flatten lower, listening for weakness.

Inside, the courier's breathing steadies under Mara's bandage. The child tightens both arms around the satchel and shifts closer to the cot, keeping their body between it and the door.

Mara

Mara

Ok mara thank you if you can do that for us I will leave you a bow to help you with hunting and we will be going on are way. Sorry for bothering you and bringing you trouble

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

Thank you. If you can do that for us, I leave you a bow to help with hunting. We go on our way now, and I am sorry for the trouble.

COOL ARROW eases the spare bow from his grip and offers it out butt first. The gesture is careful, almost formal, and the shed goes still around it.

Mara

Mara

That is a fair payment. Better than apology alone.

Mara

Mara

A useful bow is worth more than pride, and less risky than owing him.

Mara takes the bow with both hands, then points the muffled string toward the door as if weighing its balance. The first pale light catches on the herbs at her belt and on the mud drying at her boots.

Vesper

Vesper

A clean exchange, then. We keep the shed, you keep the road, and no one here speaks of tonight unless they must.

Vesper shifts aside from the doorway, making room for passage. Behind them, the cot, the satchel, and the sleeping child remain in the dim, while the yard outside brightens by the breath.

Mara

Mara

Go before the mill wakes fully. If anyone asks, I saw only mud, a sick man, and a quiet dawn.

I wake up the child and the courier and we leave mara shed and head to a tavern for food and to make plans
