Jack and the Coyote creep over the ridge together, low in the dust. Below, the den mouth is a knot of tails, ears, and barking shoulders, every coyote’s attention fixed on the two biggest ones circling and snapping for status.

Jack
Perfect timing.
The Coyote glances at Jack, then back to the pack, her body tense but steady. She edges forward, using the noise and commotion as cover.

The Coyote
They are all watching the fight. If we move now, they may not notice until it is too late.
Jack raises his rifle and sights along the slope. One clean burst of rubber rounds would split their focus and send the whole group scrambling from the hollow.
A snarling shove below sends one of the larger coyotes stumbling sideways, dust blooming around its paws. The pack surges closer to the action, leaving the rear of the den exposed.
The Coyote bares her teeth in a quick, anxious grin and waits for Jack’s cue, while the whole hollow stays deaf to anything but its own argument.
✓ Quest Accepted
Scatter the coyote pack
“Jack announces "Get out of here," he fires a burst in the air just over their heads, "last one out gets encouragement."”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled -1)

Jack
Get out of here!
Jack snaps the rifle up and pops a burst of rubber rounds high over the pack. Dust jumps from the ridge lip, and the nearest coyotes flinch hard enough to break their rhythm.
The fight below collapses into confused barking. Bodies turn, ears pin, and the whole cluster starts spilling away from the den mouth toward the brush.

The Coyote
That worked. Move, now.
Jack keeps the barrel steady for a beat longer, then the rifle settles, a few loose rounds ticking in his fur as the pack scatters downhill.

The Coyote
They are running, but now they know the ridge is alive.
One coyote glances back from the brush, snarling at the empty ridge, while the den rear stands open and briefly clear.
Quest Complete
Scatter the coyote pack
“Jack takes a shot at the snarling coyote's chest, hoping to wind it.”
SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled -1)

Jack shifts his aim and sends one rubber round straight into the snarling coyote's chest. The hit folds the animal sideways in a sharp, breathless tumble.
The coyote coughs out a bark and scrambles for balance, more stunned than hurt, while the rest of the pack jerks farther downhill at the sudden impact.

The Coyote
Good. They felt that one.
Jack keeps the rifle up for a half second longer, then the barrel dips as the ridge stays his. The loose rounds still catch in his fur when he shifts.
Below, the snapped-at coyote stumbles into the brush after its kin, and the den rear stands open with no one guarding it.

The Coyote
If we move now, they lose the den completely.
She is already poised to run, eyes flicking between Jack and the exposed hollow, waiting on his next move.
“Jack moves, stopping briefly to shoot the slowest fleeing coyote in the rump as he said he would.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Jack moves with the fleeing line, then snaps a quick shot into the slowest coyote’s rump. It yelps, twists hard, and lurches sideways into the brush, dropping the chase.
The rest of the pack flinches at the hit and breaks farther apart, no longer holding together as a group.

The Coyote
That slows them down. Good.
Jack keeps moving downhill toward the exposed den while the rifle stays low and ready.

The Coyote
Now, before they remember the hollow.
She darts ahead of him, eyes locked on the open rear of the den, while the scattered pack rustles uncertainly in the brush behind them.
“They rush the hollow, to find a mated pair shaking in fear. "Take your time, I'm just protecting some friends nearby. But you will have to leave."”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +0)

Jack and the coyote reach the hollow in a quick, controlled rush. Two adults crouch inside the den rear, pressed tight together, trembling more from shock than fight.

Jack
Take your time. I'm just protecting some friends nearby. But you will have to leave.
The pair exchange a startled look, then the closer one lowers his head first. The other keeps her shoulders tight, but neither moves to challenge him.

The Coyote
He means it. The pack is scattered, and this hollow is exposed.

Mated Pair
We were not trying to stay. We only wanted a place to wait out the noise.
Jack's words land. The pair ease back from the entrance and begin edging out, careful and embarrassed, while dust slips from the den lip around their paws.

Mated Pair
We'll go. Just... give us a moment to collect ourselves.
“Jack steps to one side to give them an open path "I wish you well, I'm sure your pups will be beautiful. Someplace else."”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +0)

Jack shifts one step aside, opening a clear lane from the den mouth to the brush. The rifle stays low. His body makes the invitation plain without crowding them.

Jack
I wish you well. I’m sure your pups will be beautiful. Somewhere else, though.

Mated Pair
The closer one blinks hard, then both of them look toward the open ground like it has finally remembered to exist.

Mated Pair
Yes. Somewhere else is better.
They edge out together, shoulders still tight, but the embarrassment is giving way to relief. Dust slips from their coats as they commit to the path away from the hollow.

The Coyote
They’ll move. Good. Just let them have the space.
The last of the den’s tension loosens as the pair clear the entrance and turn off toward the scrub, leaving the hollow empty behind them.
“Once they're alone, he pulls various trapsout of his flank. Noise traps, painful traps, and traps that are just plain humiliating. Noticeably absent are any traps that significantly injure. He turns to Coyote, "if they attempt to return to the hollow, we'll know." He begins setting them up.”
SUCCESS (Great Academics, rolled +2)

Jack reaches into the thick fur at his flank and starts drawing out a small, absurd arsenal of bundled tricks. The hollow stays quiet while he sorts them by purpose, not by menace.

Jack
If they try coming back, we’ll know.
He says it to Coyote as he works, then sets the first piece near a root snag where feet would have to slow. The marker is plain, the warning more embarrassing than cruel.
A second trap goes a little farther out, then another, spaced to make the approach noisy and awkward. Jack keeps his movements neat and deliberate, like he is arranging a fence made of bad ideas.

The Coyote
That should make them think twice.
By the time he finishes the last one, the den mouth looks ordinary again, but the ground around it has become a private warning system. The route back is still there, just no longer inviting.
“"If you want to come back with me, there's a bunch of hot dogs you might be interested in. That may also be overheated. And there may or may not also be hotdogs."”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +3)

Jack
If you want to come back with me, there are hot dogs. They might be a little too hot, though... and there may or may not be actual hotdogs.

The Coyote
Hot dogs? That sounds a lot better than hiding in a hollow all day.
She steps closer to the trap line, then gives the cleared den a final look as if checking whether it can embarrass her one last time.

The Coyote
I did not expect you to protect a den and offer lunch in the same afternoon.
Her ears tip forward, and the last of the tension leaves her shoulders. The pack's retreat has given her room to breathe, and she takes it.

The Coyote
I will come with you. After this, I am absolutely not staying here alone.
From the hollow, a loose scrap of hide and bone snagged in one of the noisier deterrents flips in the breeze, drawing an involuntary glance and a short, reluctant huff from her.

The Coyote
Good. Your little tricks work. That is useful to know.
She turns toward Jack with a quieter, steadier look than before, already choosing the walk back instead of the den.
✓ Quest Accepted
Return with The Coyote
“Sounds good, just one thing before we return. He loads the live ammo, then fires into the sky, laughing an unhinged, excited laugh. "Man I forgot how much fun these are!"”
SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled +0)

Jack
Sounds good, just one thing before we head back.
Jack shifts the rifle in his grip, thumbs in the live rounds, and snaps a fresh one into place with a practiced click.
He tilts the barrel up and fires into the sky. The report cracks over the hollow, startling dust from the trap line.

Jack
Man, I forgot how much fun these are!
The Coyote flinches at the blast, then lets out a short, relieved huff. One of the noisy deterrents rattles in sympathy, and Jack has burned a round to make the point.

The Coyote
That was loud. Effective, though.
She glances from the settling smoke to Jack, then toward the road back, her posture easy now, waiting for his next move.
“"Oh that was just for fun, that recoil is something else. Anyway, we should head back."”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)
