Jack reaches the fence line and the world changes with him. Dry grass rustles at his legs, woodsmoke drifts over the path, and the dogs beyond the homestead bark in a steady, everyday rhythm.
A weathered gate stands ahead, half-shadowed by a hedge. On the other side, a dirt yard opens around a low house, its porch busy with potted plants and a bucket that catches the light.
Jack pauses at the boundary, ears angled toward the barking. A lean farm dog comes trotting down the path, tail up, watchful but curious.

Bram
You are not one of ours, are you?

Jack
Just passing through. Mind if I look around a little?

Bram
Depends. If you are here for trouble, the answer is no. If you are here for dust and conversation, that is easier.
The dog eases closer to the gate, sniffing the air while Jack stands in the warm hush between open land and home. The barking behind him softens, as if the yard itself is waiting to see what happens next.

Meet three old friends
“"Pleased to meet you, I've been here before and know your human. I'm no trouble at all if you don't mind my ramblings, but I can wait here for your human to come out, or Lucky if he's still around. I know he wasn't feeling well last I dropped by."”

Jack
Pleased to meet you. I have been here before, and I know your human. I am no trouble, if you do not mind my ramblings. I can wait here for your human to come out, or Lucky if he is still around. I heard he was not feeling well last time I came by.

Bram
His ears flick at the name, and his stance tightens. "You know too much for a passerby."
Jack's easy offer lands badly. The dog stops sniffing the air and studies him like a gate that might open or shut.

Bram
"Lucky is inside, resting. If you are here for him, you wait at the gate. If you are here for anything else, you tell me plain."

Jack
Lucky is still here, then.
The dog does not step aside. Instead, he angles his body across the path, making the wait feel official.

Bram
"So. Do you wait, or do you leave him his quiet?"
“Jack looks visibly hurt "Oh... I'm sorry. I'll- I'll just wait here, even give you a little more space."”
SUCCESS (Good Consolation, rolled -2)

Jack lets the silence hang, then eases back from the gate until there is room between them again. The small retreat reads plainly, and the dog’s shoulders lose a fraction of their height.

Jack
That was too close.

Bram
...All right. Waiting is something I can understand.
He keeps his post, but the sharpness in his stance softens. Dust shifts under Jack’s paws as he settles at the boundary, not inside, not chased off either.

Bram
You said you know my human, and you asked after Lucky by name. That is not nothing. Start with who you are to them.
The question lands with less bite than before, more like a door left unlatched for one honest answer.

Bram
If you are staying put, then say it plain. I am listening.
“"A simple wanderer. The human finds my presence amusing, sometimes says things to me I don't understand and I respond, it's a pleasant game between us. Lucky taught me fun games to play, we had the best time! I'm Jack by the way."”
SUCCESS (Fair Conversation, rolled +0)

Jack
A simple wanderer. The human and I swap odd little games sometimes, and Lucky taught me a few more. I am Jack.
The farm dog blinks at the easy answer, then shifts his weight off the gate like he is setting down a burden he did not mean to carry.

Bram
That sounds... ordinary. Better than I expected.

Bram
Lucky taught you games, then. That name matters here.
A few dust motes drift through the fence gap as the dog studies Jack with renewed curiosity instead of suspicion.

Bram
If you are Jack, then I have been standing in your way for no good reason.
