Jack reaches the farm gate again, with smoke thinning over the road. The trap line around the den entrance still trembles from the shot, and every loose metal piece seems to hum with aftershock.

The Coyote

The Coyote

That was supposed to be a test, not a signal.

At the porch, the human is gone. Bram stands rigid by the steps, Lucky peering from the shade, and Milo keeps close to the wall, ears high and uneasy.

Bram

Bram

Jack, what did you set off out there?

Jack

Jack

I need to see what happened first.

Lucky

Lucky

The stash trap snapped open when the shot echoed. The human took the others inside, then left with the map.

Milo

Milo

He looked scared, not angry.

The Coyote pauses at Jack’s side, then steps half a pace forward, watching the porch and the road at once. The yard holds its breath, waiting for Jack to choose whether to follow, explain, or turn back.

"We're fine, will be for a while. Nobody hot hurt. I mean, maybe bruises but nothing serious. Gave the pack a good fright, they'll definitely not be causing us trouble. Oh also, this is Coyote, she's the defector that wrote the map for us. And she's hungry, got any hotdogs? Like the food I mean. I know you guys are hot."

Jack keeps his voice easy and low, and the yard loosens with it. Bram’s shoulders drop a notch, Lucky’s ears ease forward, and Milo stops staring at the road long enough to listen.

Jack

Jack

We’re fine for now. Nobody’s badly hurt, and the pack got a proper scare.

The Coyote gives a small, tired nod beside him, her attention flicking from the porch to the gate as if measuring whether the whole mess can finally stand down.

Jack

Jack

And this is the Coyote. She’s the one who drew the map for us.

Bram

Bram

That makes sense. He stops bristling, but keeps watching her carefully.

Jack

Jack

She’s hungry, too. Got any hotdogs for her?

Lucky

Lucky

Hotdogs, yeah. I can do that.

Lucky turns toward the porch steps, already moving for food, while Milo’s uneasy look shifts into cautious curiosity. The Coyote stays close to Jack, relief softening her posture as the question of what comes next hangs in the warm air.

The Stash Trap Triggered

The porch went quiet, not with fear now, but with the tired hush after a hard choice.

Jack

Jack

We leave the farm. Together.

Lucky

Lucky

I can carry food for her.

Then we move light and stay close.

Milo

Milo

Guess that makes us a pack.

Jack stood at the broken gate with his new pack gathered near, the farm behind them and the wild ahead. The old defenses were gone, the human was gone, and what remained was simpler: trust, hunger, and the road they would make together. When they finally turned away, it was not in panic, but in the quiet certainty of a life begun.
