Sisyphus Escapes Judgment
Sisyphus
Sisyphus

Thanatos keeps Sisyphus pinned on the open Styx stair, while Ares stands beside him, spear ready. Black water curls around the captive king and the cracked royal seal.

Persephone arrives through a living crown of spring growth, pale as moonlight, her hair shifting between verdant green and autumn gold. Blossoms unfurl across the dead stone.

Persephone

Persephone

The law permits his passage. His body was denied burial rites, and the Mortal Realm must receive it properly.

Her authority opens a sanctioned path upward. Beyond its threshold, Sisyphus’s discarded corpse lies in Corinth’s street, awaiting the shade that should return and receive burial.

The instant the shade crosses, it tears free of Persephone’s sanctioned current and plunges into the waiting body. The corpse rises, then flees upward through Corinth’s streets.

Persephone

Persephone

No. That was not a petition for burial. He used my permission to escape the Underworld.

The living crown withers at its edges as the breach widens toward the mortal sky. Persephone looks from the fleeing path to Thanatos, her realization becoming urgent.

✓ Quest Accepted

Recapture Sisyphus

“I pursue Sisyphus into Corinth”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

Sisyphus Escapes Judgment

Thanatos launches through Persephone’s widening passage, massive wings beating against the spring-scented current. The breach carries him upward from the Styx into Corinth’s darkened streets.

Persephone

Persephone

Go, Thanatos. Restore the boundary, but do not let the mortal realm draw you beyond its lawful threshold.

The passage snaps shut behind him with a thunderous fold of roots and black water. Several soot-stained feathers tear loose from his wings and vanish into the closing breach.

Thanatos

Thanatos

The corpse is beneath Corinth’s eastern arch.

Thanatos lands among overturned market stalls and extinguished braziers. Corinth’s citizens scatter as his hollow violet gaze fixes on the pale body fleeing toward the palace road.

Persephone

His shade has stolen a living vessel, but the death-mark remains. Follow it, and the order can still be repaired.

Thanatos crosses fully into Corinth, reaching the eastern archway as the body disappears beneath the palace shadow. The city now lies between him and the fugitive shade.

“I use my magic to conceal myself as I descend into Corinth and search for clues. Sisyphus imprisoned me once; I will not give him the opportunity to do so again.”

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -2)

Sisyphus Escapes Judgment

Thanatos folds his soot-stained wings tight and draws Underworld darkness around his marble form. His outline thins into drifting shadow as he descends through Corinth’s streets.

The concealment succeeds, but the magic costs him three feathers, which crumble into violet ash and leave a faint trail along the paving stones.

Thanatos

Thanatos

The palace shadow carries the death-mark.

Moving unseen beneath awnings and balconies, Thanatos searches the eastern approach. He finds fresh black stains on the stones, shaped like a fallen crown, leading toward a service gate.

At the gate, a thread of corpse-cold air slips through the hinges. It bears Sisyphus’s royal sigil and the faint pull of a shade wearing stolen flesh.

The trail turns beneath the palace instead of entering its court, vanishing behind stacked amphorae. Thanatos now knows the fugitive has taken a concealed route below the eastern wing.

Above the rooftops, one palace ward flickers toward the violet ash. It has not found Thanatos, but his passage has raised a quiet suspicion within the king’s house.

✓ Quest Accepted

Restore the boundary between the Mortal Realm and the Underworld

“I follow the hidden route beneath the eastern wing”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -2)

Sisyphus Escapes Judgment

Thanatos slips behind the amphorae and follows the concealed stair beneath the eastern wing. Ancient stones swallow his shadow as the passage descends beneath the palace.

Thanatos

Thanatos

The death-mark leads below the palace.

The route opens into a low service tunnel lined with cracked royal seals. Corpse-cold air pulls him onward, carrying the unmistakable trace of stolen flesh.

Thanatos reaches a buried junction beneath the eastern wing. One passage bears fresh black stains, and the death-mark’s pull is strong beyond it.

As he passes, a loose stone drops from the ceiling and strikes the floor with a sharp crack. Violet light wakes briefly in the palace wards above.

The cost becomes clear: the palace now knows something entered the hidden route. Yet Thanatos remains concealed, and the fugitive trail lies directly ahead.

Beyond the junction, the tunnel opens beneath a sealed foundation chamber. The stolen death-mark gathers there, close enough to feel through the stone.

“Is Sisyphus behind the foundation seal?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 6)

Sisyphus Escapes Judgment

The sealed foundation chamber stands directly ahead. Behind its cracked royal seal, the death-mark pulses with Sisyphus’s stolen presence, and a second heartbeat answers from within.

Thanatos

Sisyphus is behind the seal, and the shade is not alone.

The seal’s lower edge has already split, revealing a narrow crawlspace beneath the foundation. Cold Styx mist seeps through it, carrying the shade’s trail toward the chamber.

Beyond the seal, something scrapes against stone. The sound is followed by a muffled, uneven breath, confirming a living vessel remains trapped with the fugitive shade.

A violet thread runs from the cracked seal into the palace walls, but the exposed crawlspace bypasses the ward entirely. The route offers Thanatos an unguarded approach.

Above, distant bells begin to ring as the palace wards search the eastern wing. Their magic passes over the hidden crawlspace without sensing him.

Behind the foundation seal, Sisyphus remains unconscious, while the stolen shade shifts within the chamber and presses closer to the failing barrier.

“Has Sisyphus prepared another escape route?”

YES (Likely, rolled 16)

The cracked royal seal gives a sudden inward shudder. Beneath it, a concealed stone door loosens, revealing a narrow shaft descending toward the palace cisterns.

Black water glimmers far below, threaded with faint violet light. The death-mark bends toward the shaft, confirming an escape route prepared before Sisyphus’s capture.

Inside the foundation chamber, the shade drags its living vessel across the floor. Sisyphus remains unconscious nearby, abandoned beside the failing seal.

A second royal sigil appears along the shaft’s rim, already inscribed beneath layers of dust. It bears no fresh blood, but answers to the death-mark’s stolen presence.

Eudorus

Eudorus

The lower way still opens. Corinth has another door, and death will not close it before I reach the water.

The shaft’s hidden current stirs, drawing cold air downward. Beyond the cistern lies a buried channel leading toward the eastern riverbank, outside the palace wards.

The escape route is real and primed, but the failing foundation seal has exposed it. The shade presses toward the opening while bells continue ringing above.

““Who are you?” I ask the shade, keeping calm.”

Thanatos

Who are you?

Thanatos keeps his voice level as he steps into the shaft’s cold rim. The shade pauses, one hand braced against its stolen chest, and turns toward him.

Eudorus

Eudorus

I am Eudorus, once Sisyphus’s royal examiner. He condemned me when I discovered the names of those he murdered.

The admission makes the royal sigil flare. Its dust-covered lines rearrange, revealing a second inscription beneath the first: The shade’s name, bound into the cistern door.

Eudorus

Eudorus

He trapped my shade in his foundation and fed it scraps of stolen death. When his body fled judgment, I took the vessel he abandoned.

The sigil answers Thanatos’s presence instead of The shade’s stolen force. The concealed door swings inward, exposing the buried channel and a clear route toward the eastern riverbank.

Eudorus

Eudorus

That passage leads to the water. I will show you where Sisyphus hid the final ledger, if you return me to the dead.

““You ask only for what the natural order already demands, Eudorus. I accept your terms.””

Then witness this bargain, Thanatos. I will lead you to Sisyphus’s final ledger, and you will return me to the dead without letting his crimes vanish with me.

Eudorus places his stolen hand against the opened door. The buried channel brightens, and the current carries the scent of ink, ash, and old royal blood toward the eastern riverbank.

Eudorus

Eudorus

My trust is the cost. I will not guide you as a servant, nor accept silence afterward. You will stand witness when the ledger speaks.

The bargain settles into the sigil. Its second inscription fades, replaced by a living path through the cistern, while Sisyphus remains unconscious beside the failing foundation seal.

Eudorus

Eudorus

The ledger lies beneath the eastern riverbank, behind a door marked with the names he erased. Come, death god. Let us return the truth with me.

Eudorus steps into the channel, and the current accepts him without resistance. The way to the riverbank stands open, carrying both the ledger’s trail and his unresolved claim.

“I secure the hidden passage and Sisyphus’ body before pursuing Eudorus.”

Thanatos turns back from the channel and braces both hands against the loosened stone door. With a deliberate heave, he seats it into its ancient frame and seals the passage behind him.

Underworld power settles through the stone, binding the door without crushing the cistern route. No current can reopen it from the palace side while Thanatos remains away.

He gathers Sisyphus’s unconscious body from beside the failing foundation seal and carries him to a dry alcove beyond its reach. Thanatos anchors the king there beneath a ring of quiet Underworld light.

Sisyphus is secured, and the hidden passage is closed.

Eudorus

Eudorus

You kept your word. The channel remains open ahead, and the riverbank door will show you the names he erased.

Thanatos enters the buried channel after Eudorus. Behind him, the sealed foundation and the unconscious king lie secured; ahead, cold water carries the ledger’s trail toward the eastern riverbank.
