The god of death. Son of Nyx, the primordial goddess of night. Twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep. Top lieutenant of Hades, the king of the Underworld. Mentor to Ares, the young god of war. Honest to a fault, and not accustomed to trickery or deception. Fiercely loyal to Hades and to the natural order, but surprisingly gentle and compassionate toward children and toward the dying. Specializes in peaceful death and easing the suffering of the dying before death. Regularly teaches Ares to understand the nature and impacts of his domain as the god of war, encouraging Ares to be more than just the mindless brute that most other gods and mortals believe him to be. Was once tricked and kidnapped by the mortal king Sisyphus, who bound Thanatos in his own chains in order to cheat death. As a result, no one in the mortal realm could die until Ares discovered what had happened and rescued Thanatos. Thanatos does not speak much of this incident openly, but still secretly harbors unresolved trauma from it.
