Rowan Stonecrest bursts through the collapse with the others, boots skidding over wet stone as the old tunnel seals behind them in a roar of dust and falling rock. Ahead, the cavern opens wider, its walls veined with pale fungus that throbs in slow blue and green pulses.
The air changes at once, cold, damp, and sharp with mineral rot. Every breath tastes like moss and iron, and the floor dips into a black pool that mirrors the glow overhead.

Elowen Briarwood
This way. The rock is still shifting, but there is a ledge along the left wall.
Elowen points into the dim, her braid swinging as she moves first, careful but quick. Gareth steadies Isabelle for a heartbeat, then follows, one hand brushing the wall for balance.

Isabelle du Soleil
This place is alive with strange light. If we can find its source, we may find the Circle's next move.
A faint clicking skitters through the dark ahead, and the fungus glow reveals a narrow bridge of stone spanning a deeper drop. Something waits farther in, just beyond the reach of the light.

Rowan Stonecrest
The passage ahead slopes lower, and the noise is coming from below.

Find a way through the bioluminescent cavern system
“I signal for silence and creep toward the edge of the bridge to scout the darkness.”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Rowan raises two fingers, and the others ease their footing into silence. He slips to the bridge's edge, every step placed on the firmer patches of stone.
Below the glow, the drop opens into a sheer void laced with drifting mist. The bridge narrows ahead, but beyond it the cavern bends toward a darker opening, half hidden by the blue pulse of fungus.
The bridge is sound, but the darkness beyond it is not empty.
From the black below comes a soft scrape, then the faint clatter of stone against stone, as if something moves under the ledge.

Elowen Briarwood
Do you see it?

Gareth
If there is a path down there, we take it together.

Isabelle du Soleil
And if not, then we have found the place that closes us in.
“I probe the movement below the ledge”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +2)

Rowan lets his gaze sink past the ledge and into the blue haze below. A shape moves where the mist thickens, not a beast charging, but a line of dark figures hugging the stone like climbers.
A dozen Black Iron Circle mercenaries are already on the lower shelf, picking their way toward the same dark opening the party was watching.

Elowen Briarwood
There. They are using the under-ledge route.

Gareth
Then the way ahead is not clear, it is claimed.

Isabelle du Soleil
And if they reach that opening first, they can bar it behind us.
The hidden passage in the mountain wall is not a refuge at all. It is a choke point, and the enemy is moving to seal the group in the depths.
Below, stone scrapes on stone as the mercenaries start climbing for the ledge, forcing a choice before the bridge can be crossed.
“I cut off the mercenaries before they seal us in”
FAILURE (Great Athletics, rolled -3)

Rowan moves first, sprinting along the ledge toward the choke point while the others hold back from the drop. The stone narrows, wet with cavern mist, and the mercenaries below are still angling for the hidden opening.
He tries to cut across the route above them, but the footing skews under his boots. His momentum carries him to the lip too late, where the under-ledge climbers are already spreading out beneath him.
A sling-stone snaps up from below and bites the rock at Rowan’s side, showering him with grit. The nearest mercenaries duck tighter to the wall, making the ledge itself a bad place to stand.
Rowan skids, catches himself, and cannot get a clean angle on the men below. The passage ahead remains open for a breath, but not for long.

Gareth
They are forcing us to choose, now.

Isabelle du Soleil
Then we do not let them take the path for free.
Below, the first mercenaries reach the shadowed shelf beneath the hidden passage, close enough to seal it if no one moves next.
“Can Elowen use her magic to create a different path for us?”
YES (Likely, rolled 20)

Rowan Stonecrest
The rock wall behind the mercenaries is brittle, and Elowen is already tracing the ley lines in the stone.

Elowen Briarwood
Rowan, if I channel my focus into the cavern ceiling, I can collapse the shelf above them and carve a new path through the upper ridge.
“I help Elowen bring down the shelf while Gareth holds off the mercenaries.”
SUCCESS (Superb Survival, rolled +2)

The ceiling answers Elowen’s strain. Hairline cracks race across the stone above the mercenaries, and pale light leaks through them like a held breath finally breaking.
Rowan drives his weight into the broken shelf edge, helping the magic find purchase. Chunks of rock shear loose and tumble toward the lower shelf.
Gareth steps forward under the spray of dust, sword up, forcing the mercenaries to duck back from the narrowing path.

Elowen Briarwood
Now, Rowan, keep it coming. Just a little more.
With a groan that rolls through the cavern, the shelf gives way. The ledge above the hidden passage slams down in a jagged curtain of stone, splitting the dark route ahead and kicking up a blinding cloud.

Isabelle du Soleil
The break opens something above us. That way, quickly.
Beyond the dust, a narrower seam in the rock gleams with the same faint bioluminescent pulse, a rough climb rising into the upper depths and away from the cut-off passage.
