Being the spare rather than the heir, Prince Rowan was expected to be just as capable as his elder brother Prince Gareth “just in case”, but never got nearly as much fawning attention as Gareth did. But as annoying as the expectations could be, Rowan never felt any need to compete with his brother. Gareth was practically born and bred for courtly life, but Rowan never had much patience for politics, growing to prefer the freedom and adventure of the open wilderness to the constant infighting and bootlicking among the nobility. His decision to become a Ranger was deemed unbecoming of the second son of a king, but it was an honorable and often necessary job, so in the end the king and queen hadn’t protested too much. But Rowan never could have imagined having to use his Ranger training for a mission like this.
