Closing time settles over O'Malley's Irish Pub in Boston. The last stragglers are herded toward the door, and the room smells like stale beer, fryer oil, and rain-soaked pavement from outside.

Behind the bar, Scott O'Malley slams a heavy crate onto the counter hard enough to rattle the glasses. His mutton chops bristle as he looks up, tired but alert, waiting on you.

Darcy O'Donnell shoulder-checks a massive keg toward the cellar with effortless strength, her boots scraping against the worn floorboards. She does not slow down.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

There you are. Give us a hand, Patrick, we need this place locked down before the city decides to get stupid tonight.

A final patron lingers near the door, hood up, glancing back and forth between the exits and the bar like he is trying to decide whether to bolt or beg for one last drink.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

Hey, wait. I only need a minute. Somebody took my jacket, and I think they ducked out through the alley.

Darcy O'Donnell

Darcy O'Donnell

Not our problem unless he comes back through that door. Scott, tell me you counted the till already.

Scott’s eyes stay on you, then flick to the cellar stair, then to the hooded patron. The pub hums with the pressure of one more decision, and the alley outside feels suddenly very close.

✓ Quest Accepted

Lock down the pub before trouble arrives

I turn to the hooded patron and point out he's wearing his jacket as the hood of it is huding his face.

Patrick points at the hood and the room tilts with the realization. The supposed lost jacket is already on the patron's shoulders, zipped wrong, hood pulled low over his face.

Patrick O'Malley

Patrick O'Malley

That's his jacket.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

...Right. I knew that. I just, lost track of it in here.

His hand rises to the collar, then drops. A little laugh escapes him, embarrassed, and the lie goes flat in the warm bar air. Scott keeps watching, but his expression softens a notch.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

So you are not missing it, you are wearing it. Good to know. Start with the truth, pal.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

Fine. I left my phone in the coat pocket. I only noticed when I was at the door.

Darcy O'Donnell

Then check your pocket and make your exit. We are closing, not hosting a scavenger hunt.

The patron pats the jacket lining, then freezes, staring toward the front door as if the street outside has just turned too quiet. Scott's keys jingle once in his fist, waiting for the next lock.

I tell the patron to check his jacket pocket and get the fuck out

Patrick’s warning lands like a dropped mug. The hooded patron flinches, then fishes both hands into his jacket pockets.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

Oh, come on.

His fingers hit fabric, then metal, then a small phone that skitters into his palm. He stares at it, then at the floor.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

Right. Found it.

Scott gives a sharp nod toward the door, keys lifting in his fist. Darcy folds her arms tighter and angles her body toward the entry.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

Then you are done here. Out, now.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

Yeah. Yeah, I’m going.

He slips the phone into his pocket, lowers his hood a fraction, and heads for the partly closed front door. Outside, the rainlight presses thin and gray against the glass while Scott’s hand settles on the lock, waiting for him to clear the threshold.

I watch the patron clear the threshold then lock the door behind him

Patrick tracks the hooded patron to the jamb, then watches him slip out into the rain-gray street. The door closes on his back, and Scott’s key turns with a hard, final click.

The deadbolt bites home. Darcy leans in and gives the glass a quick check, her shoulders easing a fraction as the latch holds.

Patrick catches the tiny shake of the front window as wind presses against it, but nothing gets through. The room inside stays warm, the street stays out.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

That’s it. We’re shut.

Darcy O'Donnell

Darcy O'Donnell

Good. Let the rain bother somebody else tonight.

Scott lowers the keys, and the whole pub seems to exhale with him. For one clean beat, the closing job is done.

Patrick moves before the room can cool, vaulting the last step and landing with a light jolt against Darcy. The kiss lands clean and quick, all momentum and grin, and her arms catch him before either of them can spill backward.

Darcy O'Donnell

She laughs right into it, then steadies him by the ribs. Well, that is one way to end a shift.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

Scott lets out a low, incredulous breath from the door. You two are unbelievable.

Darcy gives Patrick a quick squeeze and sets him back on his feet, her eyes bright with surprise more than annoyance. One cuff of his sleeve comes away damp from her coat.

Darcy O'Donnell

Darcy O'Donnell

For a second, I thought this night was only going to be locks and lists.

Scott shakes his head, but the corner of his mouth keeps twitching upward. The pub stays quiet around them, rain ticking at the glass like it is waiting for permission.

Darcy O'Donnell

Darcy O'Donnell

She tips her head toward Patrick, half-smiling. You done being dramatic, or do I get an explanation with my next surprise?

Darcy snorts a laugh, one hand still resting at Patrick's side. Illegal? No. Unexpected? Absolutely.

She eases him the last inch back to his feet, then folds her arms with a grin that says she is enjoying this far too much for a closing shift.

Darcy O'Donnell

You just ambushed me in front of your brother, that is the crime here.

Scott O'Malley

Scott huffs a laugh by the locked door. I hate that I am on her side.

Darcy glances toward Scott, then back to Patrick, her smile softening into something warmer than the joke.

If you want a good term ending to the night, next time maybe give me half a second to brace myself first.
