The booth feels like a small island in the dim pub, all amber light and tired wood. Outside, rain taps the boarded windows. Inside, the whiskey sits between Patrick, Scott, and Darcy like a truce.
Patrick settles in with them, the noise from the cellar reduced to a dull, far-off thump. Scott rolls one shoulder and watches the room through the bar mirrors. Darcy leans back, boots hooked under the bench, finally letting her hands go loose.

Scott O'Malley
If that thing down below wants a show, it can wait. Tonight, we get one quiet drink.

Darcy O'Donnell
A miracle. Your brother says something sensible, and the pub survives.
Darcy tips the bottle first toward Scott, then Patrick, sharing the pour with a grin that is softer than her usual swagger. The three of them drink, and for a moment the boarded-up windows stop feeling like a siege and start feeling like shelter.

Patrick O'Malley
This is nice.

Scott O'Malley
Yeah. It is.

Darcy O'Donnell
Then stay a minute longer. Tell me about the stupid pirate thing again, Patrick.

Face the danger at the pub's doorstep
“I lean against Darcy, resting my head on her shoulder and I recount the entire story of legendary pirate, Blackbeard”
FAILURE (Fair Social, rolled -3)
Patrick eases sideways until his weight rests against Darcy, his head settling on her shoulder. The booth creaks softly under the shift, and the whiskey between them barely trembles.

Darcy O'Donnell
Careful. If you get any more comfortable, I start charging rent.
Patrick starts in on Blackbeard, the words coming quick and bright, all swaggering cannons and smoke-black flags. Darcy listens with a half smile, one hand absently touching the little pirate trinket at her collar.

Scott O'Malley
You know the part where he was mostly a terrifying mess of bad decisions, right?

Darcy O'Donnell
Let him have his legend, Scott. It keeps the night interesting.
Patrick keeps talking, but the story starts slipping, because Darcy is smiling at him instead of the pirate tale. Scott's gaze drifts past the booth toward the cellar door, where the steady kicking sounds stop for a beat, then resume in a harder rhythm.

Darcy O'Donnell
Patrick... tell me the version with the storm and the black flags. The one you like best.
“I do as Darcy requests and tell a better version of the legend”
SUCCESS (Great Music, rolled -1)

Patrick takes Darcy’s prompt and leans into the version he loves best. The tale turns alive in his voice, all gale-force swagger and black sails cutting through thunder, Blackbeard less a man than a storm with a beard.

Darcy O'Donnell
That is much better. Terrible man, excellent style.

Scott O'Malley
I hate that I can picture the haircut.
Darcy laughs under her breath, and Patrick’s words keep rolling. Even Scott’s mouth twitches despite himself, his glass pausing halfway to his lips.
At the bar, the hooded patron from earlier has gone perfectly still. Their fidgeting stops, one hand frozen near a sleeve cuff, eyes locking on the cellar door.

Darcy O'Donnell
That is not normal silence.
The quiet breaks when the cellar door gives another hard thud from below, and the hooded patron recoils as if they have just recognized exactly what is trapped inside.
“I tirn to the hooded patron and ask how the fuck he got inside since we're locked diwn tight and he shouldn't fucking be here”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled +1)

Patrick O'Malley
How did you get in here if everything is locked down tight? You should not be in this pub.

The Hooded Patron
I did not break in. I was let in, earlier, through the side door.
The claim lands hard in the dim pub. Scott straightens at the bar, eyes cutting to the rear hall, while Darcy’s hand stills near her collar.

The Hooded Patron
That sound from below, that is what I heard outside. I know it now.

Darcy O'Donnell
Earlier by who? Say the name.
The hooded patron swallows, then points shakily toward the bar’s side corridor, where the cellar door keeps kicking from beneath the floorboards.

The Hooded Patron
Not a name. A handoff. A woman in dark glasses, quick talk, silver case. She used the side entrance and never touched the locks.
“That's impossible dont fucking lie to us”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

Patrick O'Malley
That's impossible. Don't lie to us.
Patrick’s voice cuts through the room, flat and dangerous. The hooded patron flinches like the words hit him, and the silver case mention turns the whole pub colder.

The Hooded Patron
I am not. She had gloves on, dark coat, and she came in like she owned the place. She went straight for the side door, then the little case, then out again.

The Hooded Patron
He is telling the truth to me, I think. I should have left sooner.
Scott’s glass stops halfway to the bar. Darcy leans in, eyes fixed on the corridor, her collar trinket catching a dull glint from the low light.

The Hooded Patron
I saw her hand it over and heard the latch click. That was not me. That was her.
A hard thud rolls up through the floorboards from the cellar, and every face in the room turns toward the same seam in the wood.
“I ask the payron how this alleged mystery eoman opened a securely locked door”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Patrick O'Malley
How did she open a locked side door?

The Hooded Patron
I do not know. She had a little black key, maybe, or something thin. She touched the lock once, then the door gave.
Scott’s brows knit as he sets the glass down. Darcy’s hand lifts toward the cellar corridor, her gaze narrowing on the floor seam.

The Hooded Patron
I only saw gloves, the case, and the side entrance. She was in and out before I could ask anything.
Below them, the cellar door booms again, a dull that rattles the bar top and pulls every stare downward.
Patrick has the answer now, a lock was bypassed from outside, and the room holds in tense silence around that fact.
“I open the cellar door and stab whatever's hitting it eith my pirate sword”
FAILURE (Great Melee Weapons, rolled -3)

Patrick moves on the cellar door in a flash, sword already in hand, but the next kick slams the panel outward before the blade can land.
The hilt clips the warped wood, sparks of pain jolt up Patrick’s arm, and the point scrapes uselessly through the crack without finding flesh.
The door shudders back shut against him. The blow jars the latch harder into place, making the whole frame buckle but not yield.
Scott steps toward the corridor, jaw tight, while Darcy’s hand drops from her collar trinket to the floor, ready for the next move.

The Hooded Patron
That is not the intruder. Listen, there is someone outside.
From beyond the barricaded front comes a hard, measured knock, distinct from the cellar pounding, and the room goes still around it.
“I signal for Darcy to answer the front door”
SUCCESS (Fair Social, rolled +2)

Patrick snaps two fingers toward Darcy, then points at the front entrance. She catches it at once, straightens from the bar, and heads for the knock without waiting for more.
The hooded patron stays rigid, eyes locked on the cellar door as the front knock comes again, patient and deliberate.

Scott O'Malley
I stay on the cellar. You handle the front.
Darcy reaches the barricaded door and starts clearing the last latch with one hard tug, shoulders set.
Patrick shifts toward the corridor, sword low, putting himself between the bar and the door that is about to open.

Darcy O'Donnell
All right. Whoever is out there, they picked the wrong night.
The front door gives a louder knock in answer, right on the other side of Darcy's hand, and the pub holds its breath.
“I help Darcy clear the front barricade and tell the gooded patron that since they're here they might aswell be useful, asking them to grab a weapon and get reqdy”
SUCCESS (Fair Social, rolled +2)

Patrick yanks the last plank free with Darcy, and the front door’s pressure shifts inward. The hooded patron flinches at his words, then scrambles toward the bar shelf instead of the cellar.

Patrick O'Malley
Grab a weapon and get ready.
The patron snatches up a broken bottle, hands shaking, and backs into place beside Scott. Darcy plants the final latch aside and squares to the door.

Scott O'Malley
Good. Stay useful and stay behind us.
A second knock lands, close enough to rattle the glass in the frame. The cellar gives one hard kick below the floorboards, like it heard the answer.

Darcy O'Donnell
Patrick, on you. I’ve got the latch.
Patrick moves into the opening lane beside her, sword ready, as the door starts to give by inches. Everyone holds on the same breath.
“I let the door open to see who it is”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Patrick eases the door wider, and the pressure on it vanishes. Cold night air spills in, carrying rain and the smell of wet brick.
On the threshold stands a woman in a dark coat and gloves, silver case in hand. She does not rush, she just looks past Patrick into the pub like she already knows what is inside.

Darcy O'Donnell
That case. So that's the handoff.

Scott O'Malley
You picked a bad night to come calling.
The hooded patron goes rigid beside the bar, broken bottle trembling. Under the floor, the cellar gives another hard kick.

The Hooded Patron
I didn't bring her here. I swear, I didn't.
The woman tips her head once, eyes fixed on the opened doorway, and lets the case rest against her hip like she means to step right through it.
