The cellar answer comes at last. The door erupts outward in splinters and dust, and the thing behind it is not the trapped intruder at all, but a hulking Kestrel containment unit, metal limbs grinding, lights dead and red seams pulsing.

The Hooded Patron jerks back from the bar, hood falling away as his disguise glitches under the surge. He glows with a wild mutant signature, raw and unstable, like the pub has been hiding a storm in human shape.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

No, no, no, not now! They found me!

The lights pop and shatter overhead. Static crawls across the room, and the air hums hard enough to sting Patrick's skin. Scott squares up, while Darcy shifts between Patrick and the doorway.

Woman in Dark Coat

Woman in Dark Coat

It tracks mutants by signature. Your pub has been masking him all night.

The containment unit lurches free of the cellar, turning toward the glowing patron with cold, deliberate purpose. The lie lands with the force of the blast, the scared customer was never just a customer, he was the prey.

So all this trouble is because of this dickhead?

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

I did not know it was a hunt. I swear it. I just needed the money.

Woman in Dark Coat

It was never a simple pickup. That unit reads the mutant, not the case.

The containment unit pivots with a dry metallic whine, its dead optics locking onto the glowing man as if the room itself has narrowed to a target.

That thing came here for him. Not the device. Him.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

I did not even know what I was carrying until they told me to keep it closed.

Woman in Dark Coat

The case was bait. The device is the handoff key, but the unit was always tracking the signature it came with.

The truth clicks into place, ugly and simple. The beacon was not just a signal, it was a lure, and the man by the bar was the one it was built to catch.

If all you want is him then take him and leave us the fuck alone already!

The room goes still for a beat, then the unit’s arm retracts with a cold, measured click. It does not charge the bar, it shifts its aim toward the trembling man instead, accepting the trade.

Woman in Dark Coat

Woman in Dark Coat

A practical choice. Rare tonight.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

No. No, no, no... they are really giving me over.

The woman hooks the silver case with two fingers and starts backing toward the broken cellar opening. At the same time, the patron flinches so hard he clips the bar edge, and the back of his hand comes away scraped.

You just made a deal with the thing that broke my floor.

Woman in Dark Coat

Woman in Dark Coat

I made a deal with the only thing in the room that is still following its orders.

Darcy’s gaze flicks from the patron to Patrick, one hand resting near the little pirate trinket at her collar. The pounding below the cellar door keeps up, but softer now, like something trapped and listening.

Once this is over we can get everything fixed and be ooen again by next month

The words land with more weight than the shattered lights overhead. Scott’s shoulders ease a fraction, and Darcy lets out a slow breath she seems to have been holding since the cellar gave way.

Scott O'Malley

Scott O'Malley

Yeah. Good. Because I am not explaining a collapsed pub to anyone twice.

Darcy O'Donnell

Next month sounds ambitious. But not impossible.

The Hooded Patron swallows hard, staring at the concrete gap in the floor, then at Patrick like he is trying to memorize the shape of safety. The woman keeps edging back with the silver case, while the unit’s attention stays fixed on him.

The Hooded Patron

The Hooded Patron

If this is really about me, then I am sorry. For all of it.

A fresh crack of stress runs through Patrick’s spine, and his palm stings where the scraped bar edge caught him. Behind them, the cellar keeps thumping in its muffled rhythm, but the room itself holds together.

✓ Quest Accepted

Hand the hooded figure over to the containment unit

I step aside and gesture for the unit to take the patron.

Patrick steps aside and opens his hand toward the man at the bar, giving the Kestrel unit a clear line. The gesture is calm, but the cut on his palm stings as he lowers it.

Target confirmed. Acquiring mutant signature.

The unit lunges forward and clamps its mechanism around the Hooded Patron before he can bolt. Metal arms lock tight, and his disguise glitches hard, flickering over his face and shoulders.

Wait, no, I did not know it was me.

Patrick, that is the worst handoff I have ever seen.

Darcy O'Donnell

Darcy O'Donnell

He made the trade. The unit took it.

The woman in the dark coat snatches up the silver case and backs off, while the cellar keeps kicking below the floorboards. A spark jumps from Patrick’s scraped hand to the bar edge, a small sharp cost for holding the room together.
