Renee carries the concealed wardens’ register beneath her cloak while Tomas walks close behind, the bent chapel token wrapped under his coat. Mara leads them through ruined streets toward the eastern marker.

The route remains visibly clear beyond the boundary shimmer. Behind them, the other survivors stay in town, unaware of the chamber’s records or the planned release.

At the low marker, Mara stops. A second iron seal now covers the socket, its dark face clean against the weathered stone. It was not there earlier.

Mara

Mara

That seal changes the question. The token may authorize the gate, but this could prevent anyone from using it before the appointed hour.

Tomas kneels without touching the metal. He studies the seal’s edge, the surrounding scratches, and the recessed ring beneath the stones as the scheduled opening draws near.

Tomas

Tomas

Do not force it. If the wardens added this after our visit, the token may open the seal first, or the seal may confirm the token.

Mara

Mara

We have little time. We can examine the fitting, compare it with the register, or wait for the gate to reveal which piece moves.

“I compare the seal with the register”

The Second Iron Seal

Renee unwraps the wardens’ register and holds its maintenance sheet beside the clean iron seal. The hooked mark and three short strokes match, but the seal bears an added notch beneath them.

Renee

Renee

The seal was added after the chapel marker was maintained.

She finds the same notch recorded beside tomorrow’s release hour, indicating a confirmation lock rather than a second gate. The seal must be turned before the chapel token can release the bar.

Tomas

Tomas

You have it. The register names this as a witness seal. It confirms the appointed hour, then yields to the token.

As Renee angles the waxed page toward the fading light, its edge catches on the seal and tears a narrow strip from the maintenance sheet. The release hour remains legible.

Mara

Mara

The record survived the tear, but the seal now has our attention. Turn it only when the hour arrives, and keep the register covered.

Tomas

Tomas

At the appointed hour, the notch faces east. Then the token belongs in the socket, and the ring will release the bar.

At the appointed hour, the last light reaches the eastern face of the marker. Renee fits her fingers into the witness seal’s rough edge and turns it eastward.

The seal gives with a heavy click. Its added notch aligns with a buried groove, and a dull knock travels through the stones beneath the road.

Tomas

Tomas

The witness seal has confirmed the hour. Now use the chapel token, before the wardens’ mechanism closes again.

Tomas unwraps the bent token and offers it to Renee without touching the socket. Beyond the marker, the boundary shimmer steadies, holding the road clear.

Mara

Mara

The seal moved cleanly. No alarm, no visible change beyond the marker. Whatever happens next, the route is authorized.

A recessed plate slides aside beneath the marker, revealing the token’s socket. The iron ring rises from the stones with a muted scrape, ready for the next turn.

Tomas

Tomas

The gate is truly open to us. The wardens’ record was not a promise, but it was accurate.

Renee crouches beside the opened marker and examines the socket, iron ring, seams, and surrounding stones without turning the chapel token. Dust lies undisturbed around every joint.

She finds no spring, blade, poisoned barb, or concealed pressure plate. A fine scoring line beneath the ring shows where the locking bar will travel once released.

Tomas

Tomas

No trap. The wardens trusted the mechanism more than the people using it, but you have found something useful.

Following the scoring, Renee discovers a second recessed catch beneath the marker’s eastern lip. It can hold the bar open manually, preventing the gate from closing behind them.

Mara

Mara

That gives us a way back, if the catch remains sound. It is more than the register promised.

The mechanism is safe to operate. The clear road beyond the shimmer waits, while the hidden catch gives Renee a dependable retreat without requiring the token to remain in the socket.

Tomas

Tomas

Turn the token when ready. I will watch the bar, and Mara can mark the catch before we cross.

Renee fits the bent chapel token into the recessed socket and turns it firmly. Iron shifts beneath the marker, sending a deep tremor through the stones.

The locking bar withdraws along the scored channel. The boundary shimmer parts across the road, leaving a clear passage beyond the ten-mile limit.

Tomas

Tomas

The gate is released. The token has done its work, and the road will remain open for the appointed interval.

Mara kneels at the eastern catch and drives a narrow iron wedge into its recess. The bar holds back, preserving the gate’s opening without the token.

Mara

Mara

The catch is sound. We have a return path, though leaving it unattended would invite anyone in town to discover the mechanism.

Beyond the marker, the western road runs between frost-pale fields toward distant hills. No wardens appear, and the air beyond the boundary carries no distortion.

Tomas

Tomas

We can cross now. Whatever waits beyond, it is no longer hidden behind the wardens’ circle.

“I scout the road beyond before crossing”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

The Second Iron Seal

Renee steps through the opened gate without crossing fully, keeping one hand near the marker as she studies the road beyond. Frost-pale fields stretch toward low hills.

She examines the road’s ruts, ditches, hedgerows, and distant rises. Cart tracks pass outward and return, but no fresh prints approach the marker from beyond.

Renee

Renee

The road is clear, traveled, and free of boundary distortion.

A collapsed wayhouse stands several hundred yards ahead beside a fork: one track follows the hills, while the other descends toward a distant cluster of smoke.

Tomas

Tomas

The hill road leads toward the wardens’ western house. The lower track should reach an inhabited village, if the old records remain accurate.

Renee spots a narrow line of boot prints near the wayhouse, recent enough to hold sharp edges but too old to reveal their owner. Nothing moves around the ruin.

Mara

Mara

No ambush, no patrol, and no sign that the gate’s opening was noticed. You have seen enough to choose our first direction.
