Renee lays two rare steaks across an iron grate over the cleared hearth. Fat sizzles softly, carrying its rich scent through the narrow room while she follows the careful methods her vampire father taught her.

The woman sets folded blankets beside the wall and arranges them into a third bedroll. The quiet man remains near the hearth, his gaze fixed on the meat with measured restraint.

I am Mara. Before this place, I kept accounts for a cloth merchant in Dunmere. I can mend linen, reckon stores, and make a room orderly.

Call me Tomas. I worked as a locksmith in a town east of the river. Doors, hinges, and simple tools are within my skill.

Mara divides the bedding while Tomas accepts a wooden cup of water. The three speak of former homes, each answer making the abandoned room feel briefly inhabited rather than claimed.

Beyond the boundary, I hope to find my sister's village. What do you seek there, Renee?

The steaks are cooked, but Tomas has not touched his portion.

“I wanted to explore but also didn't want to be baby to the whole time with my adopted father.”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

The question hangs over the sizzling steaks. Renee does not answer with a story about her adoptive father; instead, she takes the rusted key and steps toward the door alone.

She has come here to explore the world without being carried through it or watched over at every turn. The choice is quiet, but unmistakably hers.

Mara

Mara

You mean to search the town tonight?

Renee opens the door and crosses into the darkened street. The key fits a small shed beside the house, and its swollen lock gives way beneath her hand.

The door scrapes loudly over the threshold. In forcing it, Renee tears the skin across one knuckle, leaving a bright smear on the rusted iron.

Tomas

Independence is useful. So is returning before the streets become dangerous.

Inside the shed, Renee finds a handcart, a coil of serviceable rope, and a shuttered lantern. The exploration has begun on her terms, though the damaged knuckle throbs.

Renee takes the shuttered lantern, coils the rope onto the handcart, and walks from the shed into the town’s narrow, dust-filled lanes.

She passes the dry well, a roofless smithy, and a meeting hall with faded notices still nailed beside its warped door. No fresh footprints mark the square.

Renee

Renee

The town was abandoned in a hurry, but not yesterday.

At the smithy, Renee finds a cold forge, cracked tongs, and several sound nails scattered beneath the workbench. She gathers them into the handcart.

The meeting hall yields a town ledger swollen by damp. Most pages are blank, but its final entry lists fourteen arrivals without names, dated three weeks before.

Mara

Mara

You have found something worth bringing back, I hope.

Mara stands beneath the hall’s eave with a blanket around her shoulders. Renee returns with the nails, ledger, and a clear map of the nearest streets.

Renee wheels the handcart beneath the meeting hall’s eave and sets the lantern on its rim. She lays out the rope, sound nails, and damp ledger for Mara to inspect.

Mara

Mara

Fourteen arrivals, three weeks ago. No names, no departures. That is not an account. It is a warning someone stopped writing.

Renee opens the ledger to the final entry and points out the date, then spreads her rough street map beside it. Mara bends close, shielding the page from the wind.

Mara

Mara

The hall, smithy, and houses were all supplied after those arrivals. Whoever expected them to remain planned for work, not a brief refuge.

The lantern flame gutters as its oil burns low, forcing Renee to shutter it between glances. Her injured knuckle leaves a faint red mark on the ledger’s edge.

Mara

Mara

Bring this inside. I can copy the entry before the damp destroys it, and reckon what the town prepared for fourteen people.

Mara gathers the ledger carefully while Renee keeps the nails and rope on the cart. The discovery is shared, recorded, and ready to guide tomorrow’s search.

“Renee asked Tomas if he like the food?”

Renee brings the handcart back to the house and finds Tomas seated near the hearth, his untouched steak cooling beside him. Mara sets the ledger on the table.

Renee

Renee

Do you like the food?

Tomas

Tomas

It smells well enough. I have not tasted it yet.

Tomas lifts the wooden plate, studies the browned meat, and cuts a small piece with the table knife. His expression stays carefully composed.

Tomas

Tomas

It is good. Richer than anything this town has offered us so far. You cooked it properly.

He eats another bite, slower than hunger would demand, while Mara copies the ledger’s final entry. Outside, the barred town settles into cold silence.

“I'm glad you like it, my adopted father taught me how to cook”

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Renee

Renee

I am glad you like it. My adopted father taught me how to cook.

Tomas lowers the knife and studies Renee across the hearth. Firelight catches briefly in his eyes before he looks back to the steak.

Tomas

Tomas

Then he taught you well. It takes patience to make poor provisions taste like a proper meal.

Mara

Mara

Was he a cook by trade, or simply someone who knew how to keep a household fed?

Mara continues copying the ledger, though her attention has shifted toward the conversation. The quill scratches steadily while the room grows warmer.

Tomas

Tomas

Her father taught her more than cooking, I suspect.

Tomas finishes the small portion and sets the knife down neatly. For the first time, he reaches for the second steak without hesitation.

“My adoptive father was very worried about my safety, so he taught me many different things.”

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +3)

Renee

Renee

My adoptive father was very worried about my safety, so he taught me many different things.

Renee speaks plainly across the hearth. Mara pauses over the ledger, and Tomas remains still, his second steak untouched in his hand.

Mara

Mara

Many things, then. Cooking, certainly. What else did he believe you must know to stay safe?

Renee

Renee

The room is warm, but Tomas's food has cooled again.

Tomas

Tomas

A guarded upbringing can leave a person better prepared than a well-supplied town. Your work tonight suggests he chose his lessons carefully.

Mara sets down her quill and studies Renee with new attention. She draws a clean line beneath the copied entry, leaving space for another note.

Mara

Mara

Then tomorrow, you should inspect the storehouse with me. If your father taught you to judge repairs and provisions, your eye may find what our ledger missed.

Learn what Tomas requires to live in the household

“my adoptive father taught me how to run a mansion as well as a storagehouse”

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Renee

Renee

My adoptive father taught me how to run a mansion as well as a storehouse. I learned to manage rooms, supplies, repairs, and the people responsible for them.

Mara's quill stops above the ledger. Her eyes move from Renee to the copied figures, then to the rough map spread beneath the lantern.

Mara

Mara

Then you are precisely the person I need beside me. A storehouse is not merely shelves and sacks. It is order, timing, and knowing what must be protected first.

Tomas

Tomas

And a mansion requires doors, hinges, servants, and provisions accounted for. Those skills may tell us more about this town than the final ledger entry does.

Mara draws a second column beneath the copied arrival record and begins listing rooms, stores, tools, and possible work crews for the morning.

Mara

Mara

At first light, we inspect the storehouse together. You will judge its condition, and I will reckon what remains usable.

The arrangement settles over the room like another bar across the door. Outside, the abandoned town remains silent, but tomorrow now has a defined task.

“all right I could do that, as I get ready to sleep. As I was sleeping my head fell onto the shoulder of Tomas.”

Renee

All right. I could do that.

Renee helps Mara clear the ledger and supplies from the table, then settles her bedroll near the hearth. The barred door holds against the silent street.

Mara snuffs the lantern after marking the morning’s task. Firelight fades to embers, leaving the room warm, close, and quiet around the three bedrolls.

Sleep comes gradually. During the night, Renee shifts in her bedroll, and her head comes to rest against Tomas’s shoulder.

Tomas

Tomas

She trusts the room enough to sleep.

Tomas remains motionless beneath her, careful not to wake her. Across the room, Mara sleeps undisturbed, one hand resting near the copied ledger.

The embers settle into gray ash. For a few quiet hours, the abandoned house offers shelter, warmth, and nothing more demanding than rest before morning.

“As Renee wakes up, she noticed that she was on someone's shoulder and she looks to see who she's right next to and apologize to Tomas, as she moves off his shoulder and grabs his hand and said sorry again”

Morning light seeps through the shutter cracks. Renee wakes against Tomas’s shoulder, then lifts her head and looks beside her, recognizing him in the dim room.

Renee

Renee

I fell asleep against Tomas.

Renee shifts off his shoulder and sits upright on her bedroll. She reaches across the narrow space, takes Tomas’s hand, and turns toward him.

Renee

Renee

Sorry. I did not mean to fall asleep on your shoulder. Sorry again.

Tomas

Tomas

There is no harm done. You were asleep, and the room was quiet.

His hand remains still in hers for a moment before he gently returns the gesture. His skin feels unusually cool despite the banked warmth of the hearth.

Mara

Mara

Morning, both of you. The storehouse will not inspect itself, and I have already set the copied ledger aside.

“All right we can do that, an again sorry Tomas, you're the same temperature as my adopted father it must be a coincidence”

All right, we can inspect the storehouse. And again, sorry, Tomas. You are the same temperature as my adopted father. It must be a coincidence.

Renee releases Tomas’s hand and rises. The hearth has burned low, and the room’s last warmth clings only to the stones and bedrolls.

Tomas

Tomas

A coincidence, then. Your father must have been a remarkably cool man.

Tomas stands and gathers his coat. His calm remains intact, but his attention lingers on Renee’s face, and her explanation leaves him quietly suspicious.

Mara

Mara

Good. Bring the lantern and the ledger copy. If the storehouse has survived, we should know its condition before the others scatter the useful things.

Renee shutters the lantern, lifts the copied figures, and unbars the door. Cold morning air enters at once, carrying dust from the empty street.

Together they cross toward the storehouse, with Mara leading by the ledger’s map and Tomas keeping close behind Renee. The inspection begins under a pale sky.
