Renee, Mara, and Tomas return to the cleared house by the eastern ruins, leaving the release marker undisturbed until dawn. The rest of the survivors remain in town, unaware of the chamber beneath their hearth.
Mara bars the door while Tomas watches the shuttered windows. Renee clears ash and loose stone from beneath the hearth, revealing an iron plate set into the floor.

Mara
That was hidden beneath the place we chose for shelter. The wardens expected someone to live above it without looking down.
The rusted key from the shed fits a concealed lock in the plate. Beneath it, a narrow stone stair descends into stale air and darkness, while faint measuring marks circle the walls.

Tomas
This is older than the chapel register. The chamber controls more than the gate. It records who was selected, and how the boundary tested them.
At the stair’s foot, iron rods and weighted lines frame a stone map of the town. Fourteen marked positions surround the chamber, each linked to an arrival road and a date.

Mara
Then the register was only the list. This room holds the reason they brought us here, and perhaps the record of what they expected us to become.

Reveal the wardens’ design for testing the arrivals
“I examine the fourteen marked positions and their linked dates.”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)
Renee kneels beside the stone map and follows each iron line from its marked position to the dates cut along the chamber’s rim. Dust gathers beneath her fingertips.

Renee
The dates are staggered, but all fourteen arrivals were measured against the same sequence.
The positions form three rings around the town: outer roads, occupied houses, and the central hearth chamber. Each arrival date precedes a boundary measurement by one day.

Mara
The roads are not random. They brought people in stages, then recorded where each person settled before tightening the boundary.
Renee traces the oldest marks and finds Tomas’s arrival linked to the western road, Mara’s to the southern track, and her own position set at the central chamber without any road.

Tomas
You were not brought here by the same route as the others. The wardens marked you as an exception before the first test began.

Mara
The final dates show a pattern. Tomorrow’s release was planned after every position had been observed, as though the chamber’s work is now complete.
