Awakening in the Infirmary

The scent of stale incense and medicinal herbs hangs heavy in the air. John Smith stirs, his head throbbing with a rhythmic, dull ache. He lies on a narrow cot inside a candlelit infirmary chamber, the stone walls damp and cool. A tall, thin man in a worn wool tunic stands over him, wringing a damp cloth between trembling hands.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Easy now, Monsieur. You have been unconscious for two days. The blow to your skull was enough to fell an ox.

John Smith

John Smith

That shadow, the assassin, he was faster than I anticipated. My ribs still ache, but the rage is starting to simmer again. I will not be put down like a common dog.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

I found this tucked into your coat when I cleaned the blood from your vestments. It seems a dangerous thing to carry.

The healer sets the wax-sealed letter from the Cardinal onto a small stool beside the bed. John watches the seal catch the flickering light of the single lantern.

John Smith

John Smith

He knows I live, and he knows I have the target on my back. I need to find the assassin before he finds his way here to finish the job.

Awakening in the Infirmary
John Smith

John Smith

Tell me what you saw. The man who struck me, was he wearing a cowl? Did he speak?

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Please, Monsieur. Your heart is racing. I have seen nothing but a bloodied cloak and your own pale face. The infirmary was empty when I found you in the courtyard.

John Smith

John Smith

He is hiding something, or he is terrified. My grip on this cot is too tight. The wood is splintering under my fingers.

John lunges to seize the healer by his tunic, but his coordination fails him. A wave of vertigo strikes, his heavy frame sliding off the side of the cot. He crashes hard onto the stone floor, his head reeling. The healer recoils, knocking over the stool. The Cardinal's letter slides into a dark puddle of spilled wash water, the wax seal dissolving.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

You are a fool to rush your recovery. Stay down before you break your own neck.

John Smith

John Smith

My strength is my weapon, yet here I lie like a broken doll. I have no leads, and the ink on that letter is bleeding away into the filth.

Rest until I heal

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +1)

Awakening in the Infirmary

Hours pass in the dim, stale air of the infirmary. John lays still, letting the steady rhythm of his breath drive away the haze of his concussion. His pulse slows, the tremors in his hands subside, and the strength begins to return to his limbs.

John Smith

John Smith

Time is a luxury I cannot afford, but a shattered body serves no one. I must be sharp when I hunt.

The healer returns to the bedside, his footsteps muffled by the straw mats. He sets a basin of fresh water down and glances toward the floor where the ruined letter still lies in a growing, dark stain.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

You are lucky to be breathing. That letter... the ink is gone, but the wax seal left a mark on the stone. It bears the crest of the Red Cloak Brotherhood.

John Smith

John Smith

The Brotherhood. They are mere mercenaries, yet they have the reach of a viper. My blood burns, but I will stay my hand until the dawn.

Where can I find the Red Cloak Brotherhood?

FAILURE (Poor Streetwise, rolled +0)

Awakening in the Infirmary
John Smith

John Smith

Where do these cowards hide, Gaston? Give me a name or a district. I will pull the truth from their throats before the sun sets.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Calm your fire, man. You can barely stand, let alone storm the docks. The Brotherhood keeps no permanent address. They operate from the shadows of the Le Marais taverns, but they are ghosts. You would be dead before you found their door.

John Smith

John Smith

He hides behind his medicine and his caution. I am wasting time in this bed while the city swallows them whole. I need to find the contact who sent them after me.

John lunges toward the edge of the bed, his teeth gritted, but his muscles betray him. A surge of dizziness sends his heavy frame crashing into the side table. A pitcher of cool water topples, sending a cascade of liquid across his bandages and the floor. Healer Gaston sighs, his patience fraying as he lunges forward to steady the wincing man.

Leave and search for brotherhood

FAILURE (Good Health, rolled +1)

Awakening in the Infirmary
John Smith

John Smith

Get your hands off me, Gaston. The Brotherhood waits for no man, and certainly not for a sluggish healer to finish his chores.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

You are a fool, John. You are shaking like a leaf in a gale. Sit down before you do more damage to your own ribs than any assassin ever could.

John Smith

John Smith

My body feels like lead, but my blood burns with a need to strike back. If I do not leave now, the trail will grow cold and these cowards will slip through my fingers forever.

John ignores the warning, his boots slamming into the wooden floorboards as he pushes off the infirmary cot. His knees buckle instantly, gravity winning the duel against his pride. He stumbles, shoulder slamming into the bedside table. The water pitcher tips, the ceramic rim striking the wood with a sharp crack as water floods the floor in a shimmering, chaotic sheet. Gaston moves with practiced speed, bracing John against his own frame to prevent a secondary collapse.

Carefully get up and look for clues

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +4)

Awakening in the Infirmary

John steadies himself on the cot edge, then rises in one careful motion. His boots find dry planks beyond the spill, and his eyes sweep the chamber instead of his temper.

He spots it at once, a muddy heel mark by the tilted table, sharp against the wet floor. Beside it lies a torn strip of dark cloth caught on a splinter, brushed with red wax.

John Smith

John Smith

The mark is fresh. Someone came in fast, and left in a hurry.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Keep your balance, man. What have you found?

John bends low, takes the cloth without fumbling, and lifts it clear of the puddle before it can ruin. The wax bears a seal cut with three narrow slashes, a sign meant to pass for nothing to the untrained eye.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

That is no merchant's mark. I saw a cloaked man near the chapel door at dusk, waiting where no patient should wait.

Gaston points toward the shuttered window as if the light itself might remember the stranger. Outside, church bells begin to toll the hour, slow and solemn.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

If you mean to chase him, then do it with this in mind. He knew you were here before he struck. Who do you trust enough to name him?

John Smith

John Smith

I trust no man but myself.

John lets the torn cloth fall into his palm, then closes his fingers around it and turns from the cot. His gaze cuts past Gaston, past the shuttered window, to the door and the dark seam beneath it.

A soft scrape answers from the corridor. Not a patient’s shuffle, but a quick boot withdrawing from the threshold.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Someone listens outside.

John crosses the slick boards in two long strides and yanks the door open. A hooded figure is there for an instant, half-turned, then slipping away down the hall with the red wax seal flashing in one hand.

He lunges after the figure and gets his answer at once, the same narrow slash-mark stitched on the cuff as the ruined seal. The assassin does not look back, only speeds toward the stair.

Gaston hurries to the doorway behind him, breath tight. "There, by the stair, that is the man I saw at dusk."

At the turn of the corridor, the hood slips farther off and the assassin’s face is plainly in view for one hard second before he vanishes into the stairwell.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Do you go after him now, or call for help?

Follow the man carefully

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Awakening in the Infirmary

John slips into the corridor without a sound, keeping to the wall where the hall light thins. The assassin’s boots leave a faint wet trace ahead, easy to read for a man with a hunter’s eye.

At the stair, John catches the turn of a hood and the flash of red wax in a gloved fist. The figure moves fast, but not fast enough to shake him.

The seal is still in his hand.

John shortens the distance in three silent strides and reaches the landing just as the assassin looks back.

The man freezes for a breath, startled by John’s sudden presence, then gives ground instead of drawing steel.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

By the saints, he is trapped on the stairs!

John catches the corner of the assassin’s cloak and wrenches him off balance. A folded slip of paper drops from the man’s sleeve and skids across the stone.

John has him now, with the stairwell open, the corridor behind, and the lost paper lying plain between them.

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Awakening in the Infirmary

John snatches the folded paper from the stone with a hard jerk, the sheet crumpling in his grip as the assassin loses balance on the step above.

John Smith

Guards!

His shout slams up the stairwell. Gaston flinches back toward the infirmary door, then straightens at once, alarm sharpening into purpose.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

This way, quickly! Keep him from the landing!

The assassin’s hand slips free of the red seal as he twists away, but his hood stays turned on John, measured and wary even in retreat.

The Assassin

The Assassin

Too loud. Too many eyes now.

John has the paper, and the stairwell answers with hurried footsteps from below, drawn by the cry.

The assassin shifts his weight toward the upper turn, choosing flight over steel while Gaston edges nearer the threshold, ready to call the hall.
