The low junction opens beneath the vault stairs. Gervais peers through the arch while Gaston listens behind John, and candlelight trembles across the damp stone.

Gervais

Gervais

The vault lies below. We can descend and risk meeting the council, or find another way around them.

A boot scrapes above the arch. The searchers have reached the stairwell, their voices muffled but nearer now. Dust trickles from the ceiling.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

Another way may take us past the vault entirely. But if the commanders leave, our chance to learn their names leaves with them.

Gervais points toward a narrow stair descending beside the arch. Its first steps vanish into darkness, while a faint draft carries wine, ash, and the murmur of several men below.

Gervais

Gervais

The lower stair reaches the council chamber. If we go, stay behind me until we know who holds the door.

Above, the searchers call for the servants' passage. Gervais waits at the descending stair, Gaston watching John, while the hidden council continues gathering below.

John moves quietly after Gervais, placing each foot on the descending stair without disturbing the grit. Healer Gaston follows, keeping close to the wall.

The stair opens onto a narrow landing. Below, a heavy oak door stands ajar, spilling candlelight across the stones and revealing the council's entrance without exposing them.

Gervais

Gervais

Good. They have left the door watched, but not barred. We can hear them before they hear us.

Gervais crouches beside the jamb and gestures John toward the shadow beneath the stair. From there, the landing gives a clear view of anyone entering or leaving.

Healer Gaston

Stay low. Their voices carry through the gap, and we may learn which commander holds the council together.

John reaches the shadowed position unseen. Through the open door, candlelit figures gather around a table while a sealed token changes hands.

The token came from the warehouse. Bar the river passage, and send word that the hunters are already below.

John leans toward the open door and stills his breathing. The candlelit council resolves into four figures, their voices separated by the stone and oak.

Four voices. I can distinguish them now.

Brotherhood Commander 1

Brotherhood Commander 1

The warehouse is lost. Armand Vautrin, take the river passage. Lucien Marot, seal the western stair.

The names carry cleanly through the gap. Gaston touches John's sleeve once, warning him to remain still, while Gervais watches the council door.

Brotherhood Commander 4

Brotherhood Commander 4

And Étienne Rouvier? He must carry the sealed token to Cardinal Mazarin before noon. No delay.

Brotherhood Commander 2

Brotherhood Commander 2

What of Gervais? If he reaches the river, he can name us all.

Gervais goes rigid beside the jamb. Below, the commanders repeat their assignments, and John now has three names tied directly to the Cardinal's hidden hand.

“I shadow Étienne Rouvier and seize the sealed token before he leaves.”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +3)

The Council Below

Étienne Rouvier, an adult human man of slight build with olive skin, a narrow clean-shaven face, cropped black hair, and a russet clerk’s coat over dark trousers slips from the council chamber with the sealed token hidden beneath his sleeve. John shadows him along the landing, matching each pause and footfall.

Gervais remains by the door, rigid with danger, while Gaston watches the stair. Étienne turns toward a narrow side passage, believing the council's watch has secured his escape.

At the passage bend, John closes the distance without a sound. His hand catches Étienne's wrist, and his other hand takes the token before the clerk can call out.

Étienne Rouvier

You move like a man who has done this before. That token will bring the Brotherhood down upon you.

Étienne's warning dies beneath John's grip. The seal is intact, impressed with a private cipher beneath the Cardinal's crest, and its weight reveals a thin key concealed inside.

Gervais

Gervais

Bring it here. That key opens the western stair's service gate. You have found their quickest route into the council chamber.

Below, chairs scrape and commanders call for Étienne. He stands disarmed of the token, while John holds the sealed proof and the hidden key, with the service route now known.

John’s hand closes over Étienne’s mouth as his other arm draws the clerk back from the landing. A swift, controlled strike drops Étienne silently against the stone.

John lowers Étienne rather than letting him fall. The clerk lies unconscious beside the wall, his russet coat undisturbed and the sealed token secure in John’s possession.

Gervais

Gervais

Quietly done. Take his place only if you must. The council still believes its messenger is moving.

Gaston kneels briefly, checks Étienne’s breathing, and retrieves the clerk’s hidden key without disturbing the seal. Below, chairs scrape as the commanders wait for their courier.

Healer Gaston

He lives, and he will remain insensible for a while. The key is ours. We can use the service gate before they discover his silence.

From below, the Brotherhood Commanders call for Étienne, their impatience growing. Gervais points toward the western stair while Gaston keeps watch over the unconscious clerk.

Gaston turns the service-gate key in the western lock while Gervais watches the council door. The mechanism clicks, but the gate refuses to move.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

It is the wrong key, or the gate is barred from within. I cannot force it without announcing us.

John steps toward the gate to confront the commanders, but iron scrapes beyond it. The council hears the failed attempt, and chairs drag sharply across the chamber floor.

Brotherhood Commander 2

Brotherhood Commander 2

The service gate is compromised. Bar the council door and search the western stair.

The oak door below slams shut, followed by a heavy beam dropping into place. The direct confrontation is lost, and boots begin climbing toward the landing.

Gervais

Gervais

They know we are here now. The gate will not give us the commanders, and the stair is no longer safe.

Gaston keeps the key in his hand as Gervais pulls back from the lock. The three men must abandon the landing before the search reaches them.

John turns from the locked gate and slips through the nearest side passage as boots reach the landing behind him. The passage narrows sharply, forcing him sideways.

His shoulder scrapes hard against the brick as he squeezes through, tearing the healing skin and sending a sharp pain down his arm. He keeps moving and clears the constriction.

Gervais

Gervais

This way. The passage bends toward the river stairs, and their searchers cannot follow quickly.

Gervais darts after him, with Gaston close behind. The three emerge into a disused wine passage beneath the western foundations, beyond the landing and out of the searchers' immediate reach.

Healer Gaston

You are through, but that shoulder has opened again. Give me a moment to bind it before we go farther.

Behind them, the commanders' boots thunder past the hidden turn. Gaston presses a clean strip of cloth over John's shoulder while Gervais watches the dark passage ahead, listening for another route.

Gervais, bind my shoulder, then find another route back to the commanders.

Gervais takes Gaston's cloth and tightens it across John's shoulder with practiced hands. Gaston steadies the dressing while boots fade beyond the hidden turn.

Gervais

Gervais

Hold still. The binding will serve, but we have lost precious time while the search passed us.

Gervais studies the wine passage, then notices fresh dust disturbed beneath a low arch. He traces it to a concealed stair descending toward the council's rear wall.

Healer Gaston

Healer Gaston

That stair may return us behind the council, but we cannot know whether the commanders have barred the lower landing.

Gervais

Gervais

We will use it. It reaches the wall behind their chamber, though I cannot say which of the two service doors opens there.

He leads them down the concealed stair. The route brings them behind the council chamber, where two unmarked service doors stand beneath the wine vault, and muffled voices carry through both.

“I listen at both service doors”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

John presses his ear to the nearer service door, then crosses silently to the second. The oak and stone separate two overlapping conversations.

John Smith

The western door carries orders; the other carries movement and keys.

Through the first door, four voices resolve clearly. One commander assigns men to the river passage while another demands that every service route be searched.

Brotherhood Commander 2

Brotherhood Commander 2

Hold the western stair. Vautrin takes the river passage, Marot seals the vault, and no messenger leaves without the token.

At the second door, John hears a chest dragged across stone, then a quiet voice ordering the sealed ledger carried to Cardinal Mazarin before noon.

Gervais

Gervais

The first door holds the commanders. The second holds their records and the route to the river stair. We know where their attention is fixed.

Gaston leans close, absorbing the report. Beyond both doors, boots shift into motion, but John has learned which chamber contains the council and which guards its evidence.

John slips the service-door latch and enters the commanders’ chamber before the guard can cross the room. His shoulder catches the jamb, reopening the scrape with a sharp flash of pain.

The chamber is narrow and candlelit, crowded by a table, ledgers, and four armed Brotherhood commanders. Gervais and Healer Gaston remain concealed beyond the door.

Chairs scrape back. One commander reaches for a pistol while another throws an arm across the ledger chest, but John stands inside the chamber now, between them and the service door.

Gervais

Gervais

Smith, keep them looking at you. Gaston and I will hold the passage behind us.

Gervais appears in the doorway with Healer Gaston close behind him. The commanders recoil from the unexpected second entrance, their formation broken before anyone can reach the river stair.
